Priyanka breaks free of her painful past and creates a life for herself

Priyanka Jogi is a 17-year-old girl who lives in Jawahar Nagar slum with her mother and four younger siblings.

When her father died eight years ago, her family was left in a miserable condition. Her mother began to sell tissues on the road to earn money to take care of the children. But she had to undergo an appendicitis operation which left her bedridden.

This left them with no money and there were days without even one meal. Priyanka decided to sell tissues to earn for her family. She was found by volunteers from Vimukti Sanstha. They enrolled her at the school where she has been studying since the past seven years.

Priyanka first went to school because of the milk and a snack that she got there. It gave her energy and kept her going through the day.

As she began to go to school regularly, she started to enjoy it. She was given a double promotion and takes part in all the activities of the school. Her teachers saw that she enjoyed crafts and trained her to make rakhis and diyas that she sells to earn money for her family. Priyanka hopes to grow up and teach poor children the way she is being taught today.

Growing children need proper nutrition which many from urban slums do not get. If they get food in their schools, they will keep coming.

You can help a girl like Priyanka by giving her a meal everyday. You can give with confidence because every program on our platform is GIVEASSURED. Your gift could give a child strength to keep going and complete her education.

Program Description

Vimukti Sanstha has identified education and vocational training as the means to empower girls from the urban slums of Jaipur. The slums of Jaipur suffer from various socio-economic problems which are intensified by the continued migration of poor families from rural areas.

The living conditions are abysmal. Two meals a day is a far cry and hence education is never a priority. Vimukti Sansata to aid this situation started providing nutritional snacks and milk in their schools to encourage parents to send girls to school. Children continuously grow and develop from birth through their teenage years. Good nutrition is the fuel for this development, forming the foundation of good health and no education can be given to a hungry child.

This program helps to provide continuous nutrition to 600 girl children in the school. Donate to this program to help Vimukti Sanstha continue to provide nutrition to young slum children.

Vimukti Sanstha

Vimukti Sanstha was set up as a society in 2004 in Jaipur .Our mission is to combat and overcome the vulnerability of underprivileged young girls by providing literacy and education in an effort to make them self-reliant and self-employed citizens.

Mr.Arun Kumar is the head of the organization. He is a Retd.I.A.S officer of Rajasthan. He held various positions in the government of Rajasthan. He was also the chief secretary of Rajasthan for 2 years. Starting with 30 girls in 2004,

Parents of most of the girls are daily wage earners and hence do not have a regular income. Many a time even if fathers earn, they do not support the family and spend all their earnings on drinking and hence the mothers are forced to work but since they are hardly educated, they can only manage to work as domestic help or cooks which fetches them little money to take care of all the expenses.

95% of the students at Vimukti are from socially backward classes including minority communities and their average family income is less than Rs 100000 annually for an average family size of 5. Vimukti works with around 600 girls from ages 5 to 17 years.

As her father is a E-rikaha driver so it was tough for him to get his all kids educated because in his family my father is a single earner, and he is unable to fulfill all the requirements. Vimukti holds her hand and supports her a lot. She was feeble and it's challenging for a girl at this time to survive, she joined Shri Ram Martial Art Academy and was advised to provide more nutritional foods, so at Vimukti we started giving her Roasted Chana with jaggery and milk so she can get Calcium, Protein and iron.as an opportunity from Vimukti and Now she is capable to protect herself. #4

report image

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Vimukti is making girls fit and future ready. Under this program girls are given proper nutritional snacks . This changes according to season and requirement. Under this program we provide a glass of milk to all the students in winter and Rainy season . During Summer we provide them a glass of buttermilk which keeps them cool and hydrated and gives them energy. Along with this we provide them with biscuits, fruits and healthy multigrain granules. There are many girls who are found underweight and malnourished so we keep tracking their weight and health status. So we try to give them a healthy snacks which is good for body and simultaneously enough to fight against hunger.
Students of all of Jaipur are covered under Our NGO. We have taken girls from Jawahar Nagar Katchi Basti, Jhalana Doongri, Jagatpura Katchi Basti, Indra nagar, Pratap Nagar Katchi Basti, Amagarh, Azad Nagar of Jaipur. All the students registered under this program are given this nutritious food everyday.

Challenges faced and next steps

There was a time when many students were moving to their native place because of Covid. Their parents lost jobs and source of earning. After lockdown when students came to us we could see the difference in their health. Anyone could feel the difference. Approximately 90 percent of the girls did not get a single glass of milk at their home or ate fruits and it simply affected their physical development. We were very much concerned about it and started giving them heathy food from the day 1. Many girls told us their sad story that how they passed these days sometimes without taking food. Vimukti always takes care of each students and gives them individual attention . Under this program we are planning to launch medical camp quarterly, where physical status of these girls
will be checked with their height, weight. And if any other requirement is needed we will do that also.

Stories from the ground

Shanvi is studying in Pre-primary. She is a very adorable child. She joined in class nursery in 2019. This year her younger sister also came for admission. She is a young girl of age 3. She looked very weak and her mother explained that her husband is a laborer who earns very less and is an alcoholic who spends most of the amount on alcohol. It makes their life very bad as they do not get enough money even to fulfill their basic need. In this case we are not able to provide these girls healthy meal. That is why the girl is very weak. This was really disheartening that these girls do not get even a normal meal at their home which includes vegetables, milk, fruits. She was just 9.5 Kg and 3 years old at the time of admission. When she came to school in starting days she did not drink milk as she was not in habit of drinking it. But she loved to have fruits and Biscuits. After few days she started enjoying milk also. We tracked her growth and kept guiding her mother about what should be eaten (which is not expensive but good for health) and other healthy habits. We make them practise yoga and exercise etc. After few month we could see the clear difference in her health. We are really thankful to Give India who is supporting us to provide nutrition to our girls.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

If I talk about one single girl then it's not there but if I talk about senior Girls then undoubting they have done a great job. As they learn how to make PPT and other applications through IIT Delhi.and knew about the banking system and other financial part from Sri Ram College of Commerce. Now they all girls know about bank facilities for girls and job options in these areas. Many girls have been given aptitude tests and they are reaching their goal day by day.Earlier we were having a lot of problems due to the non-availability of smartphones to our girls. So we provided them Tablets so they do not lack in the study. But most girls were even not able to recharge data. So we utilized the amount of Give India donation for recharging the mobile data of all these students. As the amount was 12600 so it was easily used within 5 months for the use of Milk and snacks of Vimukti Students.Initially, schools were not open but in December, January, February and, March schools were open for X and XII classes so they can attend classes and learn practicals also. almost 50 girls were coming to school every day. They all were taking all the necessary precautions during Covid. The area of Jawahar Nagar and others from the Slum of Jaipur was covered.Every day they were provided milk and Biscuit or Banana.

Challenges faced and next steps

Earlier we think to use this amount for the salary of teachers who are giving their best for educating these girls but when the school opened for senior girls so we utilized it for its main purpose that is nutritional food to these girls. We have covered the slum of Jawahanagar, Amagarh, Malviya Nagar and other nearby areas in Jaipur. As schools are open now so this program will be continued as it used to be run in Vimukti, Providing healthy snacks to students.

HELPING HAND

report image

As we all know due to lockdown and Covid-19 pandemic  government has given orders to close the school to avoid spread of Covid.
So we have also closed offline school so it was not possible to provide nutritional foods like Milk, Banana and Biscuits to our students. But we have provided dry ration for more than 3 months to each student's family.that is more than 600 families.
Except this as we have been taking online classes since April to continue study.
Many of our girls were not having smart phones so we have provided them Tablets with data recharge of one year.
Vimukti has distributed more than 400 tablets to its student with data recharge of one year so they do no have any problem in attending online class.
