A little support that put Ritu on the road to education
Ritu lives with her family in a marginalized community in Noida. Her family moved to Noida from a village in Uttar Pradesh.
Ritu had never attended school, and her family was not interested in her education. The staff from Vidya and Child counseled her parents. They enrolled her in the non-formal center.
She was 6 years old and was admitted to kindergarten. As she never been to school earlier, she didn't like sitting in class. She was very mischievous. She was not interested in learning and very talkative. She would often disturb others in the class.
To make her more attentive and responsible, the teachers at the center began to give her individual attention. The teachers gave her small tasks which she handled independently and felt very proud and good about herself.
Soon enough, a small pat on the back by her teacher or small praise in front of the whole class did wonders to her behavior. She always wanted to be seen as a good student and that also reflected in her studies.
Today, she is in Class IV and is doing good in all fields be it academics or otherwise. She is a confident child with leadership qualities. She manages to make her peers listen while she is speaking. She is very attentive in class and asks a lot of questions. She has a very positive attitude and is full of energy.
Without proper guidance and the support of the Vidya and Child center, Ritu would have remained illiterate and most possibly a daily wage worker like her parents.
Today there is a chance of a better future for her.

What the beneficiary gets
Vidya & Child works with the objective of developing a creative learning environment for children to help them merge within mainstream education and society.
Donations to the program contribute to a fund that will cover the cost of stationery and supplies to the children as well as salaries and operating costs of the center.
Education at Vidya & Child involves mainstreaming children into schools for them to complete school education. This crucial step is a platform from where children can then decide career paths and aspire for higher studies. It enables a child to access the vast opportunities of higher learning that are otherwise beyond reach.
The non-formal education center strengthens the child to compete in the mainstream world and to utilize the potential within. This is an opportunity wherein children are initiated into an academic environment and an equally strong creative learning process.
Children who have been a part of this process are beautiful painters, Kathak dancers, tabla players, can set up their own magic show, tattoo artists as well as children who excel in Maths, Science and Languages.
The organization strives to provide a holistic educational environment where academic excellence is as important as recognizing one's strengths within. They offer a positive atmosphere where every child has the opportunity to explore, create and focus on their talents.
Vidya & Child motivates the parent and the child in visualizing a purposeful future and the meaningful role that education plays in every person's life.
A robust parent outreach program tries to ensure that the child and the parent are motivated in investing the long years that are needed for a child to finish school education and move forward towards a suitable career choice to enable the child to be independent.
The program caters to children of plumbers, rickshaw pullers, carpenters, drivers and domestic helpers who are from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
These children attend classes at the non-formal education centers. Classes are held from nursery to class V, from 8 am to 2 pm every day across 4 centers in Noida. These centers cater to over 1,100 children.
A level based curriculum is followed where children learn at their own pace. Assessments are done after every level and monitored for the quality of inputs received by the children. Once they finish class V, they are admitted to a mainstream school.
Currently, 160 children also attend their after-school support programme in the evening.

Moving ahead with confidence
Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months
Our learnings from the last year have prepared us better for the new academic session 2021-22.
A plan was prepared for the new session keeping our experiences and learnings in mind. The plan revolves around the thought that children might have to continue with the online mode of education for the whole academic year 2021-22. The plan was prepared keeping in mind the below mentioned aspects - • Make content more interesting for children • Handhold children who might need a little more attention in academic • Help children through Life Skill classes who might be facing a difficult situation at home • Help and train our teachers perform better both in terms of building a bond with children and their teaching methodology online. • Build a better connect with our employees • Stay connected with parents and understand their issues and challenges.
• Our aim at Vidya & Child is to keep the momentum going and impart quality education to all our children. Support and advise parents wherever needed and help them sail through the difficult times as many of them still don’t have a steady source of income.
Some steps taken:
• Planning for the whole academic year on the basis of which the timetable was re-done for the new session.
• Separate groups created for children who need more attention
• Use Arts & Performing Arts as a medium to build a better bond between children & teachers.
More than 85% children are connected online
Each child goes through about –
o 5 hours of academics everyday
o 1 hour of Arts & Performing Arts Activity every week o 2 hour of Life Skills Activity every week Standard Methods adopted – o Online classes through Zoom / Google Meet / Teams o Online classes through Whatsapp groups – each class has been divided into two groups – around 10-12 children per group and they are connected with each subject teacher separately 150 employees along with over 30 volunteers are engaged Regular connect with parents are maintained. Over 75% parents are part of PTM On an average, a teachers undergoes over 5 hours of training in a week
Challenges faced and next steps
The year 2021 had begun with a lot of hope and optimism. At Vidya & Child, we have continued our engagement with 1600+ children through our team of 140+ people and 30+ volunteers.
Pandemic related challenges that continued -
• Our school premises still remain closed for small children i.e. up to class 8 for physical classes. All teaching continues online. We are hoping to open the same post the festive season basis the prevailing Covid-19 situation.
• Though we had opened for physical classes for all children from classes 9 to 12 from mid-August there lies a huge responsibility to ensure all covid appropriate behavior for safety of all children and our staff. • Note – Physical classes resumed for Classes 6 to 8 for November and December and are currently shut again post the winter break due to the current Pandemic situation • Fear amongst people towards the vaccine, required great efforts towards communication to convince them to go for the vaccines as per their eligibility.
• Many of the families that had gone to the villages had come back as there were no income opportunities in the village. Though the economy did open up but most have not got back to their pre-covid earnings even to date and continue to face severe financial challenges. • Food Crisis – The impact of the lockdown on financial situation of the families has been extreme and has continued for several months leading to many families not being able to afford sufficient food for the family. • With all schools and learning going online, data packs became an additional expense for the families already facing a huge financial challenge. Many families had to invest in second-hand devices so that all their children could attend school.
Stories from the ground
Ujala is a student of class 8th at Vidya & Child. She has been associated with Vidya & Child since class Nursery. She is a hard-working and sincere child. She is very good at Arts & Crafts. She enjoys her theatre classes and is a good orator. Initially an introvert, Ujala did not mingle much with her peers and was non-communicative. Things started changing when she became part of the theatre group in class 4th. Gradually, theater helped her open up, she became more expressive and was able to communicate easily. Her overall participation improved; and she slowly started to mingle with other children in her class. Today she is considered to be a very good orator amongst her friends. Ujala really enjoys her Biology class and because of her love for science she wants to pursue a career in the medical field. At home, her mother’s ill health and resultant surgery and challenges faced made Ujala further believe in her goals. She wants to help people with limited means and support them once she is qualified to.

Vidya & Child - Support education of First Generation Learners
Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months
Online Engagement with Children – Though full of challenges – from data connectivity to lack of devices, from limited data pack size to unavailability of smartphones – our children have embraced this new methodology (and Technology) of online teaching wholeheartedly. Our children help us further our resolve to ensure that every child remains positively engaged and NO CHILD drops out of the education process. • Online classes are being conducted for all subjects as per the Time Table developed keeping the ground-level situation in mind.• Children are being taught through Whatsapp Group Chats, Whatsapp Group Calls, Phone calls etc… Zoom calls are also used where possible. Teachers share links to digital content on the internet, worksheets and even do corrections through WhatsApp messages. • Teachers share Voice Notes and Videos to explain concepts that children listen to and revert if they have understood or not. • There are class-wise and subject-wise WhatsApp groups made and are being used daily by teachers and children. • Normal phone calls are done for children who do not have access to a smartphone. • Children on the other hand are doing activities, experiments and making projects and assignments and posting their pictures and videos. • Small Group classes are conducted for 3-5 children at the maximum where there is a need for more individual attention.• Creative Engagement – o Whatsapp groups have been made for creative faculty members and children.o Each Faculty has been assigned a day to give an activity on the WhatsApp group. o Children complete the activity and post their photographs / videos / voice notes / text messages. o Some of our children have made individual videos of their Tabla practices, Kuchipudi practices, theatre monologues etc.
Challenges faced and next steps
We are facing unprecedented times, and the world at large is looking for ways and means to combat the alarming situations which we are confronted with. The measures being taken to safeguard against Covid-19 through the year 2020 also brings along with it fear which is being increasingly internalised and is leading to serious consequences on mental health the impact of which will be seen in times to come. However, as the pandemic situation continues unabated through 2021, what we do witness around us is an increased economic pressure across all demographics and adjusting to the same is by no means a small task. At Vidya & Child, we are accountable to more than 1800 children, where channelizing each child’s unique potential and completion of the full education life cycle is the purpose of its existence. In the last 22 years of our being, the surety of this purpose has sustained the motivation and support of the families of these 1800 children and ensured less than 5% dropouts. Our single-minded focus is to ensure that the full body of our work built up over the years is not lost in any form and hence we must remain connected with our children and the parents so that we do not lose them and ensure that each member of our family – children, parents our teachers remain safe.

Impact story: Ujala, Class 8Ujala is a student of class 8th at Vidya & Child. She has been associated with Vidya & Child since class Nursery. Hardworking and a sincere child, Ujala is very good in Art & Craft, she enjoys her theatre classes and is a good orator. Average in studies, she makes all the effort to do her best and according to her teachers over the years Ujala has shown a lot of improvement in academics. She has become more focused, sincere and participative in class. Initially an introvert, Ujala did not mingle much with her peers and was non-communicative. Things started changing when she became part of the theatre group in class 4th. Gradually, theatre helped her open up, she became more expressive and was able to communicate easily. Her overall participation improved, and she slowly started to mingle with other children in her class. Today she is considered to be a very good orator amongst her friends. Art & Craft is another area that interests her. She is particularly good with designing and her creative skills have helped win much appreciation from her teachers. Ujala really enjoys her Biology class and because of her love for science, she wants to pursue a career in the medical field. She shares - “the biology teacher in my school is really good. I am easily able to grasp the concept and it makes me feel that I will be able to do well in the medical field”. At home, her mother’s ill health and resultant surgery and challenges faced made Ujala further believe in her goals. She wants to help people with limited means and support them once she is qualified to. Ujala stays along with her four sisters, who are also associated with Vidya & Child. Her father works in a cable shop and her mother supports her brother in his food stall. Her parents are very supportive of their daughters and want them to become responsible and independent adults. Ujala is very close to her father and says with pride that “she is her father’s favourite daughter”. A little encouragement and motivation from her father have also helped her become more focused and responsible.

Sailing through the Pandemic
Vidya & Child works with the mission to help bridge the gap for those children who need education and have no access to the facilities for learning existing in our society. It started in July 1998 with 2 children and now works with more than 1,800 children across 5 locations through its school and after school support programmes.
Covid 19 posed major challenge for Vidya & Child, which is a grass root organisation. The pandemic resulted in complete closure of school. Approximately 15% of the families had gone to village in the initial months. Initially online engagement with children was not easy as many do not have smart phones/money to buy internet data packs or have one device at home to be shared with other siblings and parents who need their phones to go to work.
Various steps were taken by Vidya & Child to work directly with each of our stake holders - the child, the parent and our employees.

• Regular communication with all our employees through Mailers, Whatsapp Messages and group calls . Information regarding preauction to be taken for Covid 19 was spread regularly.
• Employees are regularly apprised about the situation, organizational decisions related to programmatic activities as well as compensation & other policy matters.
• Regular training / reviews of teachers of teachers were done. Regular training of teachers are being done using zoom video calls.
5 August, 2020
Children in the School Programme attended academic lessons through activity based learning across all subjects. They also participated in a Science Mahotsav where they made projects and explained difficult concepts. Children participated in the Arts & Performing Arts Showcase and presented their creative efforts to their parents, donors and visitors. As part of Gandhi Jayanti celebrations children participated in a cleaning drive and cleaned the school field and their classrooms. They also participated in an Anti-Tobacco workshop. Parent Interactions was held to ensure active support and improved connection with the parents. Children also celebrated Diwali through a special assembly, participated in Sports Day and Children's Day in a fun filled manner.
Due to Covid -19 related orders from the government, schools were closed from mid-March.
