Support an underprivileged child with remedial classes

Impact

Every monthly donation helps educate more girls like Pinki

Pinki is 9 and studies in 5th std in a government school in Jhuggi, New Delhi. She was a low performer in school and couldn't do her homework properly. She soon lost interest to go to school. Her uneducated and poor parents could neither teach her nor afford a private tutor to support her.

Pinki was identified to enroll in the remedial class by CSSAR. With the additional support, she began to perform better and secured first place in her final exams. She now looks forward to going to school and wishes to pursue higher studies.

Kids like Pinki are in the danger of dropping out of school due to minor learning challenges, you can help them with a little support to stay in school.

The programme complements the school education. Children, in primary school facing learning challenges and are from families that fall below Poverty Line (BPL), are identified for this program.

After school classes from 2 pm to 7 pm are conducted in the slums and teachers are recruited preferably from within the community. An ideal teacher-student ratio is 1:15 is maintained and a quarterly test is conducted to monitor the progress of the children. The children are grouped according to their grade and given special attention. The children with this additional support become confident and start performing better in school.

After a period of remedial classes, many children become stable and no longer need additional support. When you support this program, an unfortunate child can manage to avert failure.

Center For Social Security Action & Research (CSSAR)

Centre for Social Security and Research aims at strengthening urban poor communities, especially the slum dwellers to participate in the development process for claiming their rights. Students who used to drop out of the schools because of unsatisfactory teaching methods or lack of finances to afford a tutor are regularly attending school these days owing to the remedial classes conducted by CSSAR.

The education programme fills the gaps in school education and sustains the interest of children and their parents in a formal education system. The teachers pay individual attention to the students to have a better understanding of the subject. This has helped in enhancing their performance in their schools and motivated them to pursue higher studies.Spoken English classes are also conducted for secondary level school students to enhance their communication skills and make them better equipped for the future.

Remedial classes to the school going slum girl children are conducted separately to reach out to the girls in the slums who are generally side-lined or neglected in the education system due to various constraints. So far, CSSAR has educated 3104 children. About 500 children attend the remedial classes every year.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

CSSAR provides quality education to our children from urban slum community at New Shyam Nagar jhuggi, New Delhi and with continuous efforts has managed to reach 67 beneficiaries. We have reached 67 beneficiaries at our primary study centre in New Shyam Nagar slum, Delhi. Apart from conducting remedial classes, they were also provided school stationeries as per their requirements. The fourth quarterly test was conducted on March, 2022 and the children scored quite well. Children having excellence academic score both in school and CSSAR were awarded with some beautiful prize items. An art workshop was held for our children organised by a local artist and some volunteers on June, 2022.

Challenges faced and next steps

During Covid-19 pandemic some of our beneficiaries stopped attending classes as their parents started taking them at their work places and some dropped out from schools as well. In spite of those difficulties, our trained teacher and the program manager could have managed to reach most of the children to attend classes. We conducted door step surveys to make the parents understand the importance of attending classes for their children. Apart from regular tests, the baseline survey will be conducted to assess the learning level of our children by September, 2022.

Her father Govind works as a construction labourer but could hardly meet the daily expenses of his family as he is the sole earner of the whole family. When Shivangi was enrolled at CSSAR, she was very inattentive in her classes and irregular in school. But our trained teacher’s dedication and individual effort makes her grow interest in studies. Now, she is studying very well as she scores on an average of 74% marks in regular tests held at CSSAR. Her family has been through a lot of hard times. She, though, wants to study further and aspires to be a sincere teacher in future to help her family. CSSAR has given Shivangi that direction she needed to achieve the goals.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

At CSSAR we have provided remedial education to our underprivileged primary school children even at the toughest time of the Covid-19 pandemic second wave. Due to the lockdown situation in Delhi, our classes were going online again. Our teacher-created different WhatsApp groups for the primary children and conducted classes through them. When the lockdown was relaxed, our physical classes were resumed in a local park to maintain the social distancing. We have reached 65 beneficiaries at our primary study centre which is situated in New Shyam Nagar slum, Delhi. They were provided remedial classes on the regular basis and also provided with some stationeries like notebooks, pen, pencil, eraser, sharpeners as per the requirement. On January 2021, a special annual event was held and our children who were given prizes like pencil box, geometry box etc. based on our writing and painting competitions held on Bal Diwas. The children performed dance, recitation etc. on that occasion. Three of our honourable board members attended the program and awarded the children.1st quarterly test result which was held in June 2021, showed massive progress of the children in their studies as most of the children acquired 75% of marks.

Challenges faced and next steps

This year during the second wave outbreak of Covid 19, the situation in Delhi was grim. Most of our children here come from migrant labourers' families. So, during the lockdown in Delhi, most of them ran to their native villages. At that time, it was really challenging to manage to conduct the classes as there were lots of network issues and other issues also. But our teacher and the program manager tried rigorously to connect with every child possible and could have managed to reach most of the children to conduct the online classes.Apart from regular tests, a second quarterly test will be conducted to assess the progress of our children. A cultural program will be held in November for Bal Diwas and there will be some competitions among the children.

Stories from the ground

Hailing from Kash Gunj village in Uttar Pradesh, Anjali and her family live in a rented place of one room in TC Camp, Raghubir Nagar Slum, Delhi. Her father Rambir migrates to Delhi a few years ago for a better living. He works as a scrap dealer and is the sole earner of the family. Her mother Meera is a homemaker. Rambir and Meera have 6 daughters and all of them are studying. Their financial crisis has even increased in this ongoing pandemic situation. There is only one mobile phone in the family in support of which all of the 6 sisters attend their online classes. Despite all those hurdles, Anjali shines brighter with her extraordinary sincerity and urges to learn. She is studying in class 3 in JJ No. 1 MCD Primary School, Tagore Garden. She is studious and never misses her CSSAR classes. She scores continuously well in CSSAR’s quarterly tests and her school as well. Anjali dreams to become a Teacher (AS IS IT TRULY SAID "MAKE YOUR FAITH LARGER THAN YOUR FEARS AND YOUR DREAMS BIGGER THAN YOUR DOUBTS"). Her elder sisters are also studying at CSSAR. Moreover, it’s a proud moment for us as one of her elder sisters has just cleared the 10th CBSE board with 74.20%. It's a literal dream come true situation for their family. The belief in Anjali’s eyes for the power of education has developed by looking at her elder sisters and she knows that she has to face a lot of difficulties in her life but she is ready to feel the taste of victory by facing all those barriers. She is determined, courageous and passionate.

Story from the field

Ankush, our bright-eyed boy has been promoted to class 6 this year. He was attending classes at the CSSAR centre in New Shyam Nagar, Delhi. His father works as in Keshavpur vegetable market and earns while his mother is a homemaker. His uncle, a fruit vendor, is the other person to contribute to the family’s earnings. There are, in total, 11 people in his family, making it very difficult for his father and uncle to manage the house’ finance.
His grandparents came to Delhi in 1984 from a remote village in Uttar Pradesh named Jalali. Since then, they have been living in New Shyam Nagar. Four decades have passed since then, yet it seems that their lives stuck somewhere in time. They haven’t been able to break free from the chains of poverty over these forty painful years.
As a student of SDMC Prathmik Vidyalaya, Ankush has won a gold medal in a Mathematics Olympiad and scored 382 out of 600 in his class 5th. He gives credit for his improvement in studies to our CSSAR teacher, Sardeep Kaur. The environment and the teaching methods used here have helped him reach to new heights. In his words, ‘my desire to study well brings me here every day’. He is not too far behind in other activities too.
