Amiya regains her lost self-respect

Amiya Mondal is 72 years old. She lived in Khordanahala, a small village in West Bengal. Amiya always had a very hard life. She has one son. Even with the minimum family income they had, she managed to raise her son and get him married.

As days passed by, she lost her husband to age-related illnesses.

She became frail and unable to work anymore. She was fully dependent on her son. However, her son who was not earning much began to consider her as a burden. Her son and daughter-in-law couldn't even provide her with two meals a day.

She was mistreated by her son and his family every day. She was humiliated and depressed but didn't know what to do. She resigned herself to a fate of hunger, and illness.

It was then that the team from Bani Mandir noticed her and enrolled her in the /Sponsor-a Grand Parent' program.

As a member of the program,** Amiya received food, clothing and health care support**.

Amiya, being a mother decided to share everything she received from Bani Mandir with her son and his family. Seeing this, her son realized his mistake and was sorry for the way he treated his mother. He promised to take better care of her in the future

Amina also received counseling at Bani Mandir to help her cope with her depression. She was motivated to live and assured that she would be taken care of.

Amiya now lives with self-respect. The help of monthly rations and medical help she receives does not make her feel like a burden to her family.

Today, she enjoys a normal dignified life that she deserves at her age.

Your help can make many more seniors like Amiya live their golden years with dignity. You can donate for the monthly rations and medicines the destitute elderly. You can give with confidence because every program listed is GIVEASSURED.

Every month, the beneficiaries come to the Bani Mandir office to collect their rations. If they are unable to due to fatigue or ill-health, the Bani Mandir staff delivers it to their doorstep.

Regular medical checkups at the camps in different villages are conducted for the members for preventive healthcare. They also have access to a doctor if required on non-camp days as well.

Their ration kit contains

Atta - Whole Wheat flour

Challenges faced and next steps

According to the approval of sponsorship programme for 91 aged persons, we have selected 91 aged persons out of 1000 through proper verification from the operational area. Materials were given per unit 1) Lentil 1 Kg., 2) Dust wheat 5 Kg., & 3) Rice 10 Kg. Through this program 91 poor and needy aged persons have been benefited in our operational areas. As 368 units of grocery items have been distributed to them they all were benefited minimum 4 times of such benefits continuously in this period. This has given them a new zeal to live life. It is a programme from among the rural poor and needy helpless and destitute aged persons belonging to the families struggling with poverty. Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

This programme is designed for rural poor, needy and destitute senior citizens whose families are struggling with poverty. The programme is designed to give food and nutrition with medical care to very needy elderly persons to get relief from starvation. They are poorly nourished due to lack of food. To fulfil the noble mission our organization has come forward to support them.

Post-pandemic, the food and medical support has been very much helpful to those people who are financially backward, destitute and from downtrodden families who had lost their jobs during the time of lockdown. The government has provided support to them but it is not sufficient. Bani Mandir has provided food and medical support to 15 villages in Diamond Harbour Block - II, Dist. – South 24 Parganas, State – West Bengal, INDIA. From Jan – June 2022, we have reached out to 43 elderly people (Male – 21, Female – 22).

In the period of January 2022 to June 2022 we have distributed the benefit through 65 units (FC -44 units + NonFC – 21 units) amongst 43 persons. Materials was given per unit – 1) Lentil – 1 Kg., 2) Mustard oil – 1 Kg., 3) Dust wheat – 5 Kg., 4) Soyabean – 1 Kg., 5) Gram – 1 Kg., 6) Amul Milk Powder(200 gram pack) – 1 Pack, 7) Flattened rice – 1 Kg., 8) Sugar – 1 Kg., 9) Sattoo – 1 Kg., 10) Detergent powder – 3 Pack, 11) Lifebuoy soap – 1 Piece, 12) Biscuit – 1 Pack, 13) Salt – 1 Kg. & 14) Rice – 10 Kg.

Impact – We are able to reduce the starvation of the beneficiaries by helping them have food twice daily and now they are able to lead a healthy life free from diseases.

Challenges faced and next steps

The main hurdle that we faced was lack of support staff for implementations. To overcome the staff insufficiency, we hired Community Volunteers to implement the program activities.

Another ongoing challenge is the present market price of grocery food items and others are higher than before. So it is a big challenge to us to manage the expenses accordingly.

We previously aimed to cover 300 senior citizens through the program but could only reach out to 43 beneficiaries in the period January to June 2022. Due to post Covid effect, the number of beneficiaries is increasing and as an organization we have taken the oath to cover another 500 poor and needy senior citizens in our operational area in the next 6 months (July to December 2022).

Stories from the ground

Paban Chandra Mondal S/O Late Palan Mondal Age 72 years, resident of Khordanahala village, comes from a very poor and needy BPL Card-holder family. He has two sons and two daughters. All his sons and daughters are married. He lives with his wife in one room brick built house roofing with tiles. He got paralysis some years ago and constantly suffers with different diseases. He cannot walk without a stick. In this critical situation his sons and daughters have abandoned him and his wife. At present the family income depends on making and selling ‘Puffed Rice’ from home by his wife. As there is no any other scope of earning, Paban became upset and spent all days in distress. His monthly family income is around Rs. 2500/-. With the meagre income it became very much impossible for them to get sufficient food and necessary daily medicines for him. As the 4th wave of COVID-19 has been passed away and market price of daily consuming goods increasing gradually; the family finds it extremely difficult to survive with the less income. He and his wife stays without food or half starved.

Once we came to know about Paban’s situation, we decided to support them. We provided the family with dry grocery food items twice in the period January to June 2022– 1) Lentil – 1 Kg., 2) Mustard oil – 1 Kg., 3) Dust wheat – 5 Kg., 4) Soyabean – 1 Kg., 5) Gram – 1 Kg., 6) Amul Milk Powder(200 gram pack) – 1 Pack, 7) Flattened rice – 1 Kg., 8) Sugar – 1 Kg., 9) Sattoo – 1 Kg., 10) Detergent powder – 3 Pack, 11) Lifebuoy soap – 1 Piece, 12) Biscuit – 1 Pack & 13) Salt – 1 Kg. & 14) Rice – 10 Kg. After receiving the food kit he was happy to have sufficient food support to survive.

Progress: Through this invaluable dry grocery food distribution, Paban has been able to lead a healthy and smooth life. After getting sufficient food, he and his wife has shown improvement in physical and mental condition as well. Paban is really happy and gives his heartfelt gratitude to Give India Donors, Give India and Bani Mandir for changing his life of distress to a happy one.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

This program is designed for those rural poor, needy, and destitute senior citizens who, with their families, are struggling with poverty. The milestone which we have achieved is reducing the starvation of the elderly who are sometimes without food or half starved. The program is designed to give food and nutrition with medical care to poor and very needy elderly people for relief from starvation, irrespective of gender, who suffer much for want of adequate food and health care in old age. They are poorly nourished due to a lack of food. To fulfill the noble mission, our organization has come forward to stand by them with our help to bring them back into the main stream of society and has taken this project.

In the major events during the COVID-19 pandemic, this kind of food, nutrition, and medical support was very helpful to those who were financially backward, destitute, and from downtrodden families who had lost their jobs during the lockdown. To help these people, the government has given them support for the relief effort, but it is not sufficient for their needs. Under the above circumstances, our organization has decided to stand by the people.

Bani Mandir has covered to provide food and medical support in its operational area of around 15 villages in Diamond Harbour Block-II, Dist. – South 24 Parganas, State – West Bengal, INDIA.

Under the consideration of our local villages in our operational area, our organization has come forward to stand by them for the development of senior citizens living in poverty. They are not only poor, but also helpless. They need groceries and medical care to rehabilitate in the main stream of the society.

To fulfill the noble mission, we have planned to help 300 such people in our operational area. But as per the program approval, we helped 115 (Male – 48, Female – 67) poor and needy elderly people from July to December 2021 in our operational areas that are impacted.

According to the approval of the sponsorship program for 115 people, we have selected 115 people out of 300 through proper verification from the operational area. Then a date was fixed and informed the beneficiaries, and after taking all the necessary documents with signatures, they were given benefits according to your rules and norms of COVID-19. In the period from July 2021 to December 2021 we have distributed the benefit through 235 units (FC -125 units + NonFC – 110 units) amongst 115 persons. Materials were given per unit – 1) Lentil – 1 Kg., 2) Mustard oil – 1 Kg., 3) Dust wheat – 5 Kg., 4) Soyabean – 1 Kg., 5) Gram – 1 Kg., 6) Amul Milk Powder(200 gram pack) – 1 Pack, 7) Flattened rice – 1 Kg., 8) Sugar – 1 Kg., 9) Sattoo – 1 Kg., 10) Detergent powder – 3 Pack, 11) Lifebuoy soap – 1 Piece, 12) Biscuit – 1 Pack, 13) Salt – 1 Kg. & 14) Rice – 10 Kg.

Challenges faced and next steps

The goal of standing by the downtrodden, destitute, and hapless sections of our society by distributing grocery food items and health care that we had taken now has been successfully fulfilled. Without having sufficient staff and because of the “partial lockdown” for COVID-19, we faced a severe challenge during the distribution of grocery food items. But we are always ready to face any kind of challenge for the cause of the people living below the poverty line. During the time of the pandemic of the Corona Virus (Covid-19), it was a great challenge for us to implement the program with full awareness as the 2nd wave was running. We have been strictly maintaining the rules and regulations of the Government of India for COVID-19 since the middle of the month of March 2020 till now. Under the above circumstances, we have decided to stand by the people. People mostly suffer from starvation. They are daily wage earners because during the time of lockdown, their income completely stops. As a result, they don’t have any other way of keeping their lives intact. We have distributed the benefits by maintaining social distance by providing masks and sanitizers to all the beneficiaries. We also make it mandatory for the use of hand sanitizer and the wearing of masks during the time of medical checkups and distribution of grocery food items. This was the challenge we faced.

As the pandemic session for COVID-19 and its 2nd wave is going on, we have faced some difficulties at the time of distribution of benefits. In this situation, we are always ready to face any kind of challenge for the cause of the poor and needy people in our operational area. We also make it mandatory for the utilization of hand sanitizer and the wearing of masks during the time of distribution of grocery food items. The vaccination program is going on through the government hospitals. Most of the beneficiaries have gotten vaccinated at present. Though most of the beneficiaries have got vaccines, some people in the villages are now affected by the Corona Virus again. So their financial earnings are now in difficulty due to repeated “lockdowns” and the need for food is growing also. This was the first COVID-related hurdle that we have faced.

To overcome all the COVID related hurdles, we have organized several awareness camps on COVID-19 and the importance of vaccination amongst the beneficiaries in our operational area. Also, a group of our sponsored beneficiaries have arranged some awareness camps on COVID-19 issues and helped the villagers get vaccinations in the proper way. We also make it mandatory for the utilization of hand sanitizer and the wearing of masks during the distribution of grocery food items and health check-ups. So the rate of affection of the Corona Virus in those areas has been decreased at present compared to previous times.

Under considering the rural helpless and destitute senior citizens of our local villages in our operational area, our organization has come forward to stand by them for the development of senior citizens living in poverty. They are not only poor, but also helpless. They badly need groceries and medical care to rehabilitate in the main stream of society. For the fulfillment of our aim previously, we have targeted 300 senior citizens, but only 115 beneficiaries have been covered as per the approval of this program in the period July to December 2021. On the other hand, the number of beneficiaries is increasing gradually due to COVID-19 and its effects. Most families are jobless in this pandemic session and cannot earn money to get daily food to survive. Also, the 3rd wave of COVID-19 has reached our operational areas. For this reason, the “partial lockdown” is going on. On the basis of the gradual increment in need for food support than previously, our organization has taken the oath to cover another 500 poor and needy senior citizens in our operational area by providing them with groceries and medical care for the next 6 months (January to June 2022).

Also, it was very difficult to arrange some food to be eaten twice daily for two members of the family. As the 2nd wave of COVID-19 is going on, her income was almost reduced because some people had stopped her for the daily work at their home and her monthly income had reduced to Rs. 1000/-. With this small income, she and her family are to sometimes go without food or half starve. As a result, they are becoming the backward section of our society and they cannot understand how to keep their lives intact. They are not only poor but also helpless. They badly need grocery and medical care to rehabilitate in the mainstream of society. To fulfill the noble mission, we have planned to help 300 such persons in our operational area. But as per the sanction and disbursement for 96 beneficiaries from Give India, we helped 96 poor and needy elderly persons in our operational areas that are impacted. According to the sanction of the sponsorship program for 96 persons, we have selected 96 persons out of 300 through proper verification from the operational area. Then a date was fixed and informed the beneficiaries and after taking all necessary documents with signatures, they are given benefits maintaining the Govt. rules and norms of COVID-19. In the period of January to June 2021 after a thorough medical checkup per beneficiary by our Project Doctor Dr. Gopal Chandra Mondal, we have distributed the food items through 159 units (FC -71 units + NonFC – 88 units) amongst 96 persons. Grocery materials were given per unit – 1) Lentil – 1 Kg., 2) Mustard oil – 1 Kg., 3) Dust wheat – 5 Kg., 4) Soyabean – 1 Kg., 5) Gram – 1 Kg., 6) Amul Milk Powder(200-gram pack) – 1 Pack, 7) Flattened rice – 1 Kg., 8) Sugar – 1 Kg., 9) Sattoo – 1 Kg., 10) Detergent powder – 3 Pack, 11) Lifebuoy soap – 1 Piece, 12) Biscuit – 1 Pack & 13) Rice – 10 Kg.

We also make it mandatory for the utilization of hand sanitizer and wearing of the mask during the time of distribution of grocery food items. This was the challenge we have faced. The chant of serving people which have become an inseparable part of our thinking and also has mixed into our vain that never be separated from us. Without having the grant assistance from Give India we never fulfilled our challenge of standing by the destitute and downtrodden people in our operational area.As the pandemic session for COVID-19 and its 2nd wave is going on some difficulties we have faced at the time of distribution of benefits. In this situation, we are always ready to face any kind of challenge for the cause of the poor and needy people in our operational area. We also make it mandatory for the utilization of hand sanitizer and wearing of the mask during the time of distribution of grocery food items. The vaccination program is going on through the Govt. The program is designed to give food and nutrition to poor and very needy elderly persons for relief from starvation, irrespective of Gender, who suffer much for want of adequate food and health care in old age. They are poorly nourished due to a lack of food. To fulfill the noble mission our organization has come forward to stand by them with our help to bring them back into the mainstream of society and has taken this project. In the major events during the pandemic session of COVID-19, this kind of food and medical support was very much helpful to those very people who are financially backward, destitute, and from downtrodden families. Also, the only earning member of these kinds of families had lost their jobs during the time of Lockdown. To help these hapless poor and needy elder person Government is giving limited support for the relief but it is not sufficient for their need. Under the above circumstances, our Organization has decided to stand by that very people by giving food and medical support. Bani Mandir has covered by providing food and medical support to the poor and needy senior citizens in its operational area within 20 villages in Diamond Harbour Block - II, Dist. – South 24 Parganas, State – West Bengal, INDIA.Under consideration of our local villages in our operational area, our Organization has come forward to stand by them for the development of senior citizens living in poverty.

Challenges faced and next steps

The oath of standing by the downtrodden, destitute, and hapless section of our society by distributing grocery food items and medical care that we had taken now we have successfully fulfilled. Without having sufficient staff because of “Lockdown” for COVID-19, we had faced a severe challenge during the distribution of grocery food items. But we are always ready to face any kind of challenge for the cause of the people living below the poverty line. During the time of the pandemic Corona Virus (COVID-19), it was a great challenge for us to implement the program full of consciousness. We have been strictly maintaining the rules and regulations of the Government of India for “Lock Down” since the middle of the month of March 2020. Under the above circumstances, we have decided to stand by the people. Mostly suffered from starvation people are daily wage earners, because, during the time of lockdown, their family income completely gets stopped. As a result of which, they don’t have any other way, how to keep their life intact. We have distributed the benefits of maintaining social distance by providing Mask, a Sanitizer to all the beneficiaries. Hospitals. But it is not available as per need due to lack of supply. So most of the beneficiaries have not got vaccinated at present. This was only the COVID-related hurdle we have faced. To overcome this situation we have arranged many Awareness Camps on COVID-19 several times and the importance of vaccination amongst the beneficiaries in our operational area. We also make it mandatory for the utilization of hand sanitizer and wearing of the mask during the time of medical checkup and distribution of grocery food items. So the probability of Corona Virus affection has been decreased at present than the previous times. Under consideration of the rural helpless and destitute senior citizens of our local villages in our operational area, our Organization has come forward to stand by them for the development of senior citizens living under poverty. They are not only the poor but also helpless. They badly need grocery and medical care to rehabilitate in the mainstream of society. For the fulfillment of our aim previously we have targeted 300 senior citizens but only 96 beneficiaries have been covered as per the approval of this Program in the period January to June 2021. On the other hand, the number of beneficiaries is increasing gradually due to COVID-19 and its effect. Most of the families are jobless in this pandemic session and cannot earn money to get daily food to survive. Also, we know that the 3rd wave of COVID-19 is on the doorstep. In this tough situation, our Organization has been undertaken the goal to cover another 500 poor and needy senior citizens in our operational area by providing them grocery and medical care for the next 6 months (July to December 2021).
