Impact

Shova overcomes her challenges and is learning to be independent

Shova Kumari was deserted by her parents when she was just a day old because she was mentally challenged. When no one came forward to care for her, the ' Child Welfare Committee' of Gomati district enrolled her in the Abhoy Mission home.

She was assessed and diagnosed with multiple disabilities. As she grew up, Shova remained dependent in all domains of ADL -Activities of daily living.

Activities of daily living (ADL) is a term used in healthcare to refer to people's daily self care activities. Common ADLs include feeding ourselves, bathing, dressing, grooming, cleaning oneself after defecating and leisure.

She also had very poor social skills. She did not respond to any communication directed to her.

With consistent care, nurturing, and training there was remarkable change in her. Slowly she started showing interest in her surroundings and to learn to take care of herself.

She can now eat her meals independently. She has started to speak a few words and small sentences to express herself. This helps her establish communication and relationship with others. She enjoys singing and remembers the tunes of a few songs.

She also involves herself in small chores at the home like watering plants,

Her caregivers are hopeful that with time, she may grow up to one day be independent.

Children like Shova are abandoned because of their mental challenges. You can help them change their fate and help them with a future.

Your help can save many poor children like Shova from a life of unspeakable danger on the streets. You can donate so that they can get a safe shelter and care for their condition. You can give with confidence because every program listed is GIVEASSURED.

Program Description

Abhoy Mission runs a safe home that is dedicated to provide adequate care and shelter to orphans with special needs.

Donations to this program cover a part of the cost of a child's stay in the home. The expenses include daily food supplies such as groceries, milk, fruits, meat etc, medical provisions, toiletries as well as the salary of the cook and the attendant.

The children at the home are abandoned by their parents or lost children who are sent by Government child welfare agencies. They are assessed for level for disability at admission so the right kind of care can be provided to them.

If the authorities are successful in locating the parents of the children, they are sent back home. If the parents are untraceable, they continue to stay in the Home.

The children remain in the home till they reach the age of 18 or till they are able to take care of themselves. Most children in the home are in the age group of 6 to 18 years. The home has a capacity to care for 30 children.

When you donate to this program you help an abandoned child with disabilities who would have ended up in the streets with a safe shelter and care.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

All the children of our institute are differently abled with multiple disabilities. They attend counselling daily to improve their social behaviour. They are trained how to wear their clothes on their own, how to talk with guests or other children at the centre. We have a Special school set up in our institutions to give the atmosphere of a school where they go and study every day with our teachers. We have the class where the children are divided as per FACP assessments like pre-primary, primary, secondary pre vocational and vocational and the classrooms are divided accordingly. One of important things we observe in them is that if they get proper training and atmosphere they can work and also turn into a lucrative professional business. Many of our children who are above 18 are trained to make different things so they can make candles without the help of any staff. They also make door mats, garlands with plastic flower which we use as gifts to any visitors. Most of the children who are staying in our institute have locomotor disability. For them we have separate rooms for physical therapy sessions. As they live in a closed environment, we try to celebrate every national holiday as well as local regional cultural festivals. Events like Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, Makar Sankranti, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose?s birthday, Republic Day, Vasant Panchami, Holi, Rabindranath Tagore?s birthday, rath yatra were celebrated throughout the year. On 7thapril our children attended Special Olympics Bharat, Tripura Chapter. Children directly impacted are 26. The programme launched by GiveIndia has a formidable impact on the children as well as their family. The main impact is behavioural development. The staff worked with full concentration and sincerity. Their affectionate training has helped to develop their behaviour. Their physical development is also visible. The tireless effort of the Physiotherapist and Yoga Trainers has helped to develop their physical growth. Having seen the development of the children, their family and other people of the society also have been pleased and satisfied.

Challenges faced and next steps

We are working with special needs children. To bring these children into the mainstream of the society is itself a challenge to us. Different children have different types of disability. We have to mobilise support considering their needs. The sincerity of our staff helps us to overcome such challenges. Our next goal and plan is 1) to prepare the children to attend school 2) to provide medical facilities to them 3) to create awareness about Covid-19 and hygiene 4) to generate interest in games and sports & cultural activities etc. 5) to observe ritual festivals for them.

Stories from the ground

Supriya Datta is a speech and hearing impaired child with 76% disability. On 03.07.2018 she was enrolled in Swabalamban Rehabilitation Centre for Children with Special Needs with placement order from south Tripura CWC. A little girl, Supriya had a big joint family, but after her father?s sudden death this family was broken. Her mother is a day labourer by occupation. Financial inadequacy made her mother incapable of providing care and protection to this disabled child. For her protection, Supriya?s mother brought her to our children Home. If we look at her medical condition during the admission in our institute, she was underweight suffering from nutritional deficiency disease with severe mental depression with total absence of speech. She was a physically weak child. She had uncontrolled hypothyroidism. If we now look at the child we can proudly say that we changed the life of Supriya drastically in all aspects and continuously tried to improve her life. Under strict medication and also continuous follow ups, Supriya?s hypothyroidism is under control, and the doctor said that she is now in good condition. Under regular counselling and regular follow ups with the speech therapist, Supriya can sing 2 to 3 lines of songs and recite poetry. Regular physiotherapy and yoga therapy has improved her physical health much more and now she can perform yoga individually. Supriya now performs group dance. One of our great achievements is that she performed in State High Court programme by National Legal Services Authority and also New Delhi Vigyanvhaban by NALSA in the presence of Honorable Chief Justice of India, Honorable Minister of Women and Child Development of India. In academics Supriya is now in primary-I in our Special school and also studies in class V in a Govt. School. She can draw flowers and colours. Supriya got 2nd position in long jump in district wise sports competition by govt. of Tripura and also got prizes in another sports competition.

During Durga Puja from 12th October to 15th October, all the children and the elderly of the Ashram wore new dresses and went out to visit various pandals in Agartala.

Through the efforts of various units mentioned earlier, we are able to nourish these children through personality development, creativity building , and confidence of dealing with our world.

Challenges faced and next steps

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, Swabalamban rehabilitation Center maintained strict safety and precautionary protocols for safeguarding the children from the disease. A new hurdle faced was that due to raising Covid infection, schools closed which meant that children with intellectual disabilities were affected a lot.

In the upcoming months, we will focus on providing training for personal skills and social skills through engaging group activities, emphasizing functional ability, occupational skill, and prevocational training.

Stories from the ground

Diya Deb is a sweet girl who suffers from Moderate Mental retardation and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. Her parents got divorced as her father was mentally ill. Other people at her father’s house used to abuse Diya’s mother and Diya very badly. It was not possible for Diya’s mother to leave Diya alone in a home and go to work. She worked as a day laborer and went from house to house selling vegetables. So, she made many efforts to arrange a sitter to keep little Diya. However, she got her admitted at Social Welfare and Social Education Department at Agartala. A big problem noticed was that Diya used to pull out her own hair and eye-brows. Seeing that, when Diya was 6 years old, an order was issued by Social Welfare Department through Child Welfare Committee, West Tripura on 3rd September, 2014 for admitting her at Swabalamban Rehabilitation Center for Children with Special Needs, Gakulnagar. From there our journey with Diya started.

In the beginning, Diya used to violently vandalize things, tear off her clothes and pull out her hair. Then we sought medical advice and with the help of our special counselor, we slowly moved Diya towards her positive aspects. Diya’s mother used to visit her almost every month and take her home for occasions. Her mother also mentioned that Diya used to go alone in front of the river bank to play.

After admission to CCI, Diya was sent to Purba Gakulnagar HS School. After a while, we noticed various positive traits in Diya’s personality. She became more socialized and confidence grew in her. That resulted in her tantrums being reduced. Diya routinely now wakes up early in the morning and gets ready for school by wearing the uniform on time. She always very excited to go to school. Presently, Diya is in class VI.

One morning a phone call came to the Superintendent informing that Diya’s Mother was murdered and thrown to river a month ago. Then we immediately contacted the Office Incharge of the local police station. That news shattered everyone.

A funeral for Diya’s mother was organized. But Diya didn’t realize that her mother is no more. Other boys and girls in the CCI told Diya that your mother is dead. But Diya told everyone loudly that her mother will come.

We gave her love, care, and affection so that she is able to mingle like earlier. Recently our efforts have given a result as we observed that Diya calls her caretaker Anjali as Maa. But even today, when anyone tells Diya about her mother, she says that her mother will come. Till today she is waiting for her mother to come meet her.

Stories from the ground

Impact story: Priyanka Debnath enrolled in our Child Care Institute on 11th Nov. 2019 by placement order from CWC, West Tripura District. The child is suffering from a moderate degree of intellectual disability. Delay in development was also noticed in her. She was born on 3/07/2007. Her father Shir Pulin Debnath is 70 years old and Smt Laxmi Acharya half of the age of her husband left the family. Her mother gave birth to two special children Priyanka and Abhijit, and for this reason, she left the family. Beacuse Priyanka’s father is an aged person he is unable to take responsibility of these two children. So, Priyanka and her brother Abhijit both were enrolled in the Swabalaban Special Children Home. She was never sent to any kind of educational training before enrolment. Training on drawing, singing and dancing is being imparted to her. She is under yoga training. Training on Pre-reading, pre-number is also being provided. She is being motivated to take part in group activities including religious activities to develop self care skill in her. One day, in the midst of morning class, a group of children were sitting in their respective class in the corridor of the first floor of Residential Building of Swabalamban Rehabilitation Center for Children with special needs, under Gakulnagar G.P. OF Bishalgarh Subdivision of Tripura. There were words of chatting coming from them about arguing about the structure of window in their class. One group is saying it is made of glass and other is saying it is made of wood. After a lot of words of arguing they decided to throw a piece of stone towards the window. That will prove any one of the statement. After the experiment when the window glass broke into pieces it is clear that the window was made-up of glass. The group was every happy and expressed their victory by saying this to the teacher of the class.
As they are special children with intellectual disabilities, their mindset belong to the age of below 10 years. They are always very curious. From this incident, we can observe the development of these children due to proper nutritional and medical support. As we all know their curiosity occurs when the child gets a healthy environment to develop. We always have facilities of physiotherapy support on requirement basis, vocational training, recreational activities & Yoga therapy by the competent professionals on a regular basis. The children are attending drawing class, dance class, Story Telling and paying attention to TV programs. Especially during this covid-19 period we take more measures to look after the food and medical care of the child as they are under significant risk of developing severe, even fatal illness if they get contaminated by the disease considering their fragile health conditions.
The program entirely targeted the children with special needs who are discarded by their families and the social order. A number of children were recovered from streets. After rescue by local Police/ Child line Children are placed by the Child Welfare Committee of respective District. At present, children with intellectual disabilities, speech and hearing impairment, Cerebral palsy, autism, mental illness especially schizophrenia and visual impairment are provided with rehabilitation service.
By this noble support from Give India, we are able to provide a beautiful environment in the development process of these children who are person with special needs.

The program is entirely targeted the children with special needs who are been abandoned by their families and society. Most of the children with whom we are working are found in streets. With the help of Child Welfare Committee and local police of different areas the children were been recused. During Admission at our Centre as the children are suffering from intellectual and hearing, speech disability they are unable to tell their name and address. For that reason, we usually give a beautiful name to them and also prepare official document in our identity. After coming to the home we provided them all the care, love and proper nutrition that they deserve. Now, less or more there is development in them by social skills and intellectual activities. Our Swabalamban Rehabilitation Center able to come up to this chapter with the help of the generous support from Give India and their donors.
