Dandekar Aji finds her second home in the Mahilashram!

Dandekar Aji, as she is lovingly called, was 68 when her husband passed away. She was uneducated and had depended on her husband. They lived on a very low income and yet, she managed to raise three children, two sons and a daughter

When her husband passed away, her daughter was already married. Her elder son took over the familial responsibilities. Unfortunately, he met with a fatal accident.

Her daughter had to take care of her in-laws. She couldn't afford to take care of Dandekar Aji as they were already living in a limited income. Her younger son and daughter-in-law were not supportive. Her daughter-in-law often beat her and starved her.

When she was living in this abject misery, she met a doctor. The doctor was one of the committee members of Shraddhanand Mahilashram old age home. She advised Aji to approach the home for shelter.

She is now 90 years old and has been living in the Shraddhanand Mahilashram old age home for the last 22 years. She has developed age-related complications and is now a heart patient. She has had one heart attack. The old-age home takes care of her medication and care.

She is now spending her last days in peace with her needs taken care of and without worry of abuse.

Many elders like Dandekar Aji need a place with food and shelter to spend their last days in dignity. You could help them with this basic need.

Your help can make many more seniors like Dandekar Aji live their golden years under a safe shelter. You can donate to the living expenses of the elderly who live in the old-age home and help them with medicines. You can give with confidence because every program listed is GIVEASSURED.

Donations to this program help in covering the staff salary, medicines and sanitation of the elderly women staying at the Shraddhanand Mahilashram home in Vasai

While the old-age home offers free stay for abandoned and poor women, it also provides paid services for seniors who can afford them.

The home also celebrates popular events and festivals to keep the spirit of the women. Out of the 56 residents, 31 women live in the ashram are underprivileged and offered free shelter.

A basic medical test including blood tests, x-ray, urine routine etc is done to assess their health at admission. They are registered using a photo and an identity proof at the time of admission.

The old age home has all the facilities required for peaceful living of the resident women. There are dormitories and bathrooms on each floor for the use of the residents. Every senior has their own bed, cupboard space to keep their belongings. There is a common room with a television which the residents can watch at leisure. There is a dining hall for all meals.

report image

During the period from April to December 2020 we had many festivals which we celebrated in the Old Age Home premises by following the protocols of COVID-19.
On the occasion of Gudi Padwa grannies performed Pooja and offered Naivedya to God. Ganpati & Navratri festivals also celebrated by performing Pooja, prayers and Bhondla - typical traditional songs for special performance in Navaratri. Sweets and eatables were prepared for Diwali festivals with the help of grannies.
Grannies prepared lantern and greeting cards for Diwali festival. Rangoli was drawn in front of the door. Grannies spent their time after naps by reading books, playing Antakshari, reciting Ukhanas, playing carom boards, snake and ladder game. Creative work like preparation of greeting cards (Thank You Card) given to the grannies. These cards were offered to the donors. All grannies are religious . They celebrated Tulsi Vivah very enthusiastically. Actually it is sort of Pooja. Tulsi is a plant which is beneficial for clean environment as well as for human health. Tulsi Vivah is a festival where Tulsi plant is considered as divine part of God, where a ceremonial marriage of Tulsi and Lord Krishna is held. The Tulsi wedding signifies the end of the monsoon and the beginning of the wedding season.
All the grannies were happy and cheerful in the safe shelter.
