Gift a hearing aid to a hearing impaired child

Impact

A donor like you gave Satish the power to hear!

Satish is an 11-year-old boy from a poor family in Hyderabad. His father is a farmer and the only earning member of the family. Satish was born with a hearing problem but his family did not have the knowledge or money to get him the help he needed.

He was identified by the NGO Ashray Akruti to receive support. They helped his parents understand the need of hearing aid. They taught them how being able to hear would also improve his speech and language skills and was a necessity for Satish to grow.

Ashray Akruti then provided him with a good hearing aid. They also gave him speech and audio therapy. Soon Satish started to frame small sentences and speak. He now goes to school, learns and enjoys his life like any other child.

Program Description

Ashray Akruti runs a school for hearing impaired students. Hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit in humans today. Approximately 8 % of the total affected population are children. These children for this program are selected by the organization based on their age, the percentage of hearing loss and family's economic status.

The students need hearing aids on a continuous basis. These hearing aids also need replacement every few years. The organization uses the behind the ear model of hearing aid. This model sometimes costs more than Rs.15,000 ($231). Ashray Akruti requires donations to empower the underprivileged hearing Impaired children by supporting them with hearing aids.

Donations made to this program support the cost of the 'Behind the ear' hearing aid given to the beneficiaries. When you donate to this program, hearing-impaired children get access to hearing aids and use their innate capabilities to reach their optimum level of independence.

report image

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Events: The hearing aids received through the support of Give India helped the children with speech and language development.

There are speech therapy classes conducted for the hearing impaired children twice a week. Speech and auditory skills report is taken every three months of all the students, so hearing aid plays a very important role. Every student needs to wear a hearing aid and the teachers follow the oral aural method of teaching. With the help of an hearing aid the child will listen and lip read with the oral aural method that the teacher uses in class and understands the lessons taught in the class.

Challenges faced and next steps

Ashray Akruti has set up an hearing diagnostic center in Srinagar colony

At Ashray Akruti ear & hearing clinic, an audiological evaluation starts with video otoscope examination to check the status of outer ear & tympanic membrane. If the chuildren are diagnosed with issues such as impacted wax, ear discharge, ear pain they will be referred to ENT for further treatment.

After diagnosis, parents and children panic and worry which is a challenge and hence parents of children are counselled about the rehabilitation process & hearing aids are provided for trials, based on the degree & type of Hearing loss. These patients cannot afford to buy a new hearing aid for themselves.

The Ashray Akruti school actively encourages the children to use hearing aids to help them use their residual hearing power and trains them to listen and speak. The students are assessed and evaluated at the hearing clinic run by Ashray Akruti by qualified Audiologist & Speech Language Pathologist (ASLP) we ensure right type of hearing aids are prescribed and provided to the beneficiaries.
