Every monthly donation empowers more women like Guria to be independent
Girdhari migrated to Delhi with his mother Guria after his father passed away.Their living condition was very poor. Between looking for a job and having no money, they hardly ate a decent meal. He and his sister also discontinued their education.
Under the Family Strengthening Program Girdhari & Hallo received financial assistance for health, nutrition and education. Guria Devi was helped with finding a job. A bank account was opened for her and she was trained on how to operate it. Basic KYC for the children's admission was done.
With this assistance, Guria devi is now empowered to take care of her family. With a little assistance, a family can become self reliant and the children can avoid dropping out of school.

What the beneficiary gets
Program Description
The SOS "Family Strengthening Programme" (FSP) is a preventive programme to support children who are at risk of losing parental care by empowering their families. The FSP has a two-pronged approach. It looks after the education, health and overall development of children. It also empowers families by enhancing the income of the caregiver by providing vocational training, capacity building and capital support through SOS Self Help Groups.
The beneficiaries are children from families living under the poverty line, those of single/widowed/divorced mothers/fathers, and orphaned children who are living with grandparents/relatives. The programme is implemented through SOS Children's Villages across all parts of the country. Each family has an annual development plan, which is monitored periodically to meet the set goals.
The programme is run in 33 locations across India. By helping empower a family you can safeguard the future of the children and help them break the cycle of poverty.

Educating the family to educate the bright minds
Our Family Like (FL) care and Family Strengthening (FS) programs are the pillars of our Child care model. One of the crux for SOS Children’s Village Kolkata, FS Program is our Sishu Panchayats (Baal Panchayat) members. It’s working great at our community level and one of the successful areas to explore under FS Program. All our Sishu Panchayat members are very active and well-verse about our program objectives.
SOS Children’s Village Kolkata-FS Children carefully observed the community surrounding to ensure that their community should be aware about the social issues. For that, they displayed handmade banners at vantage points and picked up trash from the club and other places alerting everyone about the harmful effects of pollution and the 3 to save trees, water, electricity, #NOCHILDALONE campaign etc. Children also participated in creative and awareness based session to develop their knowledge about Child Rights, child labour, importance of Education, social evils and its harmful effects, use of toilets & proper sanitation system and how we can possibly keep our community error free. They organized annual community sports to encourage the different age group children and spread the positivism amongst them.

Program Update
Our SOS Mothers are not genetically related to children in our family homes, but their role and contribution in the lives of children is what makes them mothers. A Mother looks after the physical, nutritional, educational and emotional needs of all the children to ensure that they get the right attention, resources and opportunities to grow and settle in adulthoods. Regular trainings equip the Mothers with information about SOS policies, nutritional, social & emotional requirements of children, and their own physical and emotional well-being and instils a zero-tolerance approach towards physical or emotional abuse.
Story from the field
Geeta Singh, 44 years of age, is an endearing yet unyielding woman. She has been serving as a mother with SOS CV in Khajuri Kalan, Madhya Pradesh, a village dedicated to caring for children with special needs, since 2003. Scared and doubtful of taking care of children with special needs, Geeta gradually eased into her role of a Mother. Geeta has been thoroughly trained to handle physical, emotional, nutritional and special needs of children at the Village. She was taught to deal with various medical conditions and the dos and don’ts of taking care of a specially -abled child. She was also trained to perform therapy for children with walking aid. Raising children with physical and emotional impairments is not an easy task, but Geeta took on this responsibility with courage and full dedication. “I have raised 12 children with special needs over 14 years. At times, it’s very demanding and challenging, but I have always found support from everyone at SOS India. When I see my children succeed in life despite all the odds, I feel I have achieved my life’s purpose. In 2015, two of Geeta’s children were selected to participate in the Special Olympics World Summer Games, Los Angeles and won.
