Educate an underprivileged tribal girl by Rajasthan Bal Kalyan Samiti

The girls are living happily in the education complex/residential school here and their overall health is also good. There are 500 girls living in this educational complex located in Beeda, Jhadol block Udaipur district, their school is also located in this campus. During these 6 months the girls celebrated festivals, including a colorful festival like Holi. Republic Day was celebrated in the month of January in which cultural programs were organized. Although the examinations of these girls start from March-April for different classes, so from March to May, the girls are more focused on studies. All these girls come from poor families, who do not even have basic facilities like electricity at their homes. Due to bad financial condition, their parents are not able to give them good education or good life. The girls are given accommodation, food and education absolutely free of cost. These 500 girls do not have to pay a single penny for their living, food or education. Because of this, girls live and study here. They get all the facilities under one roof, which gives them further encouragement in studies.

The board exam is completed in March-April and all the girls have passed. The rest of the class exams get completed by May and their summer vacations also start from May 16. In these holidays some girls also went home, but some girls are orphans stayed back in the hostels. During the summer vacations, a learning festival was organized for the girls, in which they were taught to make the best out of the waste with Art and Craft.

When these girls first came to the campus they spoke their own languages and they could not understand Hindi, which made it difficult for them to study in Hindi. So when these girls come, the first effort from our side to be put in was to improve their Hindi language. And for this the teacher has to take special remedial classes for Hindi subject. The new session will start in July, so now the process of re-enrolment of the last semester girls and new girls is the next plan.

Sanju is in the 10th std. now and she is studying in this school from 5th class. Despite the educational level of her parents being nil they motivate Sanju to study and pursue her dream of building a career in the agriculture stream. Sanju shares a special bond with her mother and is very close to her. Sanju's father is a farmer and mother is a daily wage labourer. The family still lives in a mud house without any facilities but her parents are happy with the fact that Sanju is able to live and study with all the necessary facilities. For further studies, she wants to take agriculture subject which she will get in RBKS's other school. So she is very happy that she doesn't need to go other place to study agriculture. She is an enthusiastic child and her hobbies are dancing and singing. Sanju is a farmer's daughter, so she is most interested in agriculture, after studying in agriculture, she wants to help the people of her own village in farming and help the farmers.

We are happy that, after eighteen months of interrupted studies, all children have finally been allowed back to school. COVID cases in Rajasthan appear to have fallen significantly over the past couple of months. Primary schools in Rajasthan were permitted to reopen to all students at the end of September. This is the first time that children aged ten and under have been allowed to attend school since the first lockdown and school closures in March 2020.

Besides their academic education, the girls are taking part in many extra-curricular activities, like daily worshiping God, doing yoga, playing with friends, dancing, learning computer programs, drawing, reading books, watching TV, and encouraging each other to grow! Festivals are celebrated in our residential/hostels. Career counselling was also organized for 14 and older girls. Nearly 500 girls are supported under our education programme.

Girls are being assessed as part of their return to school. Regular assessments help the team to understand where children are with their learning and what support they need to make progress.

Sending girls to school was one thing, and the next challenge was ensuring their active participation in classroom-based learning as, after eighteen months, these girls got to go to school. They did not feel well for a few days, but after a week, they settled into the school environment. They are also being encouraged to reflect on and articulate their emotions, feelings, and attitudes as they settle back into the school environment and new daily routines.

Nirmala's mother has passed away, her father has left her alone and gone somewhere, and now she lives in our institution. Nirmala is studying in class 6 today. When she came to us, she did not know anything about studies, but then, due to our efforts, she made progress in studies. Now she can read and write. Although she is still a little weak in maths, we give her tuition and are trying to improve her maths.

This project enables girls in a remote rural community in Rajasthan to access education. We are committed to providing Education with a nurturing and inclusive learning environment. Schools are closed at present in line with Government restrictions due to Covid-19, but all girls enrolled at the school are being supported by additional teachers appointed by the organization. Girls are actively learning through online classes and smart classes as well. Older girl students receive guidance about skills and qualifications needed for different professions and vocations. They are supported to make applications for onward studies.For a couple of months, School was able to welcome back Class 6-12 class students in line with government health guidelines. (Younger pupils in Classes 1 to 5 were not permitted to return to school.) We develop Covid safe protocols for the girls going to school. Precautions were taken to keep all team members and children safe. The school closed again in April when lockdown measures were reintroduced.

The long-term impact of the pandemic on children’s learning is extremely concerning. Hostel expenses are also increasing due to the closure of the school because girls are being given tuition in the hostel itself, for which separate teachers had to be appointed. Teaching-learning materials are also increased for girl’s use. Since the school closed there are greater differences in learning levels, so our focus will be given on learning level improvement and support of weaker students. The team is working on how to better support the individual learning needs of all students.

Geeta does not have a mother and her father is unable to get her a good education. Geeta has been associated with our education program for almost 9 years. Geeta belongs to Magavas village of Jhadol block and comes from a very poor family.Geeta is clever in her studies and she enjoys painting and drawing. She also makes Heena art very good in hands. Geeta participated in various competitions held at the state level and came first in the essay writing competition at the state level, as well as she has secured 70% in the 10th board exam, which is a great achievement.

School remains closed, in compliance with Indian legislation, which does not yet permit schools to reopen all classes. Children growing up in the marginalised community experience disadvantage without the pandemic compounding inequalities. We are therefore committed to ensuring that students enrolled at school are able to continue learning outside their normal classroom environment, while the school remains closed. However in January 2021 school reopened for class 9 to 12. While sending girls in school they follow covid-19 safety protocol. Teachers are continuing to keep in regular contact with these students, visiting them at hostel to provide learning materials and worksheets on a weekly basis and marking and discussing their work. We provide them tuition and provide learning, reading materials. Library books play important role this time as girls reading and enjoying story books. Big girls using reference books from library. Storytelling sessions happens on regular basis. Teaching them through smart classes.

Educate Tribal Girl Child with Smart Classes

In education, we always ensure to provide quality education to the girls and so that girls can understand the topic easily and can learn well. We running multiple programmes for girls to fulfil their learning needs like running smart classes, organizing educational activities like quize competetion, drawing competetion and story telling organized among girls from our library books. To get good perecentage in board exam we provide extra coaching class to our 10th class girl students, this acedemic year 5 girls received extra coahing on all subjects. But their main focus was on science and math subject strengthning. In smart classes girls are learning through digital platform and visual content. By visual content they learn quickly and enjoy learning in smart classes.

Program Update

Rajasthan Bal Kalyan Samiti started their education programme for girls in 1985 with 17 students in one school. Today they run seven schools, which cater to students from Grade 1 to Grade 12. These schools are all located in tribal populated areas of Jhadol and Kotra in Udaipur District, among the most deprived and under developed areas of Rajasthan. Girls residing in the hostel go home in summer vacations and on festivals like Diwali and Holi. Girls studying here are between 5 to 17 years. Girls are provided breakfast, lunch, evening tea with biscuit, fruits or toast and dinner. The school and hostel are on same campus so girls come to the hostel for lunch during school days. Typically breakfast is at 8.00 AM. One of Upma, Poha, Dalia is served. Lunch is at 12.30 PM and consists of Rice, dal, rotis and vegetables while dinner is at 7.00 p.m. and usually the girls have dal or vegetables with rotis

My name is Geeta Chauhan. I am 15 Year old and Studying in Class IX. I am from Magwas Village of Jhadol Block, Udaipur District. My Father is handicapped and mother is no more. I have 4 Sisters. But all are married. We all lived in mud House. I used to cook food on stove and getting water from 4 km away from home. I don’t bath, wash clothes and brush my teeth regularly. We eat only Chapattis and Dal. I don’t go to school. I was only at home taking care of my father. There are lot of struggle in my life. I think that my life is limited to this only. My life changes When Hansraj Children Residential Home is inaugurated. I am one of the student from very first batch. When I was moving from my village to Hansraj Children Residential Home I was a little bit hesitated for a new place. But after a week I feel homely atmosphere over here. All the teachers and Warden love me like their daughter. Whenever a feel sad they comfort me. They teach how to speak in Hindi. Residing at Hansraj Children Residential School my schedule is very good. Proper hygiene is maintained over here. My interest is in Hockey and Football. I learn Drawing, Play Hockey, football and various game over here. I played football at district level championship. This was my biggest achievement in my life. And food is on plate, for water I never have to go out from Hansraj Children Residential School. I used to eat various kind of food other than Chapatti, Dal – roti. I love to eat chocolates, fruits, ice cream and Cakes. Now I am learning English speaking. I can introduce myself in English. My studies are on going very good. We have smart classes for better understanding the content of curriculum. Now a very confident in my life. I want to become Sports Teacher. Now Hansraj Children Residential School is like my Home. I enjoying here.

Kisni is a 10 year old studying in Class I. She has 1 sisters.She is from Badgoan village of Girva block of Udaipur district. Kisni’s father is no more and her mother is labourer. So there is no one to take care of her at home. She didnt study at all. She has less interest in Study. Here at Rajasthan bal Kalyan Samiti deve;lop a interest in study by Samrt Classes and Digital Learning. Now she is more interested in styudying.

Children came from tribal background where the literacy and hygiene levels are too low. They were very shy, introvert and unhygienic at the time of admission. But with our great effort and children support to lift themselves in society the tremendous modification are seen like talking in English, maintaining hygienic, Extrovert, Competitive towards participation and many more.
