Suman gets her right to dream

Suman was a 7-year-old child without any dreams. Simple joys like going to school and making friends were alien to her. Her father had a damaged kidney and her mother was a daily wage worker. Their extreme poverty neither allowed them to send her to school and nor were they able to fulfill her small needs.

RBKS intervened to help enroll Suman in their Boarding School. She was given free access to education, boarding and lodging, uniforms, shoes, socks, and food. With proper support, she now excels in academics and has discovered her talent in dancing. For someone who was a shy insecure child, she now performs the Kalbeliya, which is a folk dance of Rajasthan.

Program Description

Sapna's 'Support the Girl Child' program - 'Pankhuri', currently works with underprivileged girl children from the villages of Kaduki, Vijay Mandir, and Thekra in the Alwar, Rajasthan. Beneficiaries for the program are identified based on their family's economic condition.

The girls are admitted to reputed schools and Sapna takes care of all their needs, including school fees, uniforms, books, and transport. The Program Coordinator monitors the academic progress of the girls in the schools. The girls covered in this program report to Vijay Mandir from where they are sent to school in a bus owned by Sapna. After school, the girls come to Vijay Mandir where they complete their homework with teacher assistance, attend library sessions, computer classes, and receive nutrition before going home.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

SAPNA started a pre-primary school named SAPNA Shikshalaya in 2015 which presently in 2022 has extended till middle school, affiliated to Rajasthan Board. Milestones achieved: • Improved literacy rate amongst girls coming from the rural belt; • More literate girls from poor families; • Community is more sensitized about importance of girl’s education; • Reduced dropout rates of girls; • Increased livelihood opportunities for girls in the long run. • Girls have become more aware about other important issues which helps them in their overall development. • Girls have started to understand the importance of education due to which child marriages have come to halt. • Because of other co-curricular activities, they have realized other talents in them and now they are always eager to come to school.

Various activities and celebrations happened throughout the year like Republic Day, Independence Day, Earth Day. Parent Teacher Meet was a successful one where interaction between the teachers and the parents happened about the progress and the way ahead. In the academic year (2022-23), 269 girls are studying in the school. There are 14 teachers with an experienced principal to supervise and coordinate their work. A well-designed curriculum focusses on developing the oral and written skills. Our student teacher ratio is 16:1 i.e. we have 1 teacher looking after 16 students. How the work was carried out: The school starts at 8:00 am in summer and 8:30 in winter. Every morning begins with a prayer followed by warm up exercises or yoga twice a week. This is followed by a recitation of rhymes session done by both students and teachers. Of Pre-primary classes. This is followed by Math, English, Hindi and moral science classes. The school ends at 1:00 noon in summers and 1:30 pm in winters. Because of co-curricular activities, the girls have realized their talents in them and now they are always eager to come to school. Students were motivated to participate in district level competition . This year two girls have got medal of best player in kabbadi competition.


Challenges faced and next steps

In rural India, a majority of girls are either engaged in agricultural activities or household chores, specifically being in-charge of sibling care. Hence, they do not attend the school regularly. Teachers do regular home visits or call the parents so the absenteeism is reduced. They speak to girls and make them realise the importance of education. Early marriage is one of the challenges we faced. The girls are from Gurjar and Banjara community. The moment the girls attain puberty they get the girls married along with their sisters. The parents are continuously counselled so that the girls don’t leave the schooling in between. Personal hygiene is one of the other challenges we faced as girls are from rural background. They are continuously sensitized about menstrual hygiene and self-hygiene so that they can spread the awareness to their households and now we are getting positive reports from parents. For menstrual hygiene we are distributing free sanitary napkins to our girls. Language spoken by the girls is also one of the challenges as these girls speak the local dialect. It was a big task for teachers to work on their language, ensuring that they speak proper language.

Kripa Gurjar from Kaduki is a 13-year-old cheerful and confident girl. Her father is a milkman and mother is a housewife. She has two sisters and one brother. She is good in academics, loves dancing and enjoys participating in co-curricular activities. She has leadership qualities and wants to excel in whatever task is given to her. She is given extra classes for English as well as regular motivation to participate in sports and public speaking. With all the support Kripa has become a self motivated and confident girl.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

During COVID, it was not possible for us to have regular classes in school. Therefore, we started with classes in villages. It helped the teachers to be with their students and help them continue their academic development. Teachers are regularly going to the village to teach students. They have set up an open classroom where students can sit keeping in mind the recommended precautions. Some of the parents have provided the compound of their house where classes can be conducted. We regularly talk to the parents and students about the importance of taking precautions during this pandemic. We emphasize the importance of wearing masks to the students and set an example by ensuring they have their masks on and that they sanitize their hands before attending the class. We provide them with masks and sanitizer for the same.

Key activities in the last 5-6 months

Independence Day Celebration: Buntings and Balloons were used to decorate the school. The progamme started with the hoisting of flag by Peepal Baba and Chandrul Sir. Anju of class 5 recited a poem followed by Sapna ‘s Poem “Naya Samaj Banaye”. Arti of class 7 recited an English poem “Somethings cannot be expressed in words”. Sonakshi, Muskaan, Pooja, Manisha, Monika also expressed their devotion for their motherland through their poems. At the end, Chandrul Sir spoke about the importance of Independence Day. He told children to imbibe the values of our leaders.

Rakhi Celebration: Students of pre-primary and primary made Rakhi with the help of the teachers. The teachers explained to the students the importance of this day. Students of classes 5, 6, 7 wrote an essay on the importance of Raksha Bandhan.

Nutrition: Sapna Shikshalaya has always emphasized a proper and healthy diet. Teachers remain in constant touch with parents regarding their child’s diet. Sapna Shikshalaya provides almonds and bananas on daily basis.

Gandhi Jayanti: The day started with a special assembly where the theme was the life of Gandhiji. This was followed by a small quiz on Gandhiji. The students of Nursery to Prep did a painting activity on Gandhiji. There were poems and a talk on Gandhiji as well. The programme was anchored by Ms Dimple Dhabai and Mrs Aruna Khushwaha.

Founder’s Day: On October 21, Founder’s Day was celebrated to thank sponsors who have helped Sapna financially or otherwise. The students of came with exhibits based on Hindi, English. Life Sciences. Social Science, Arts, and Crafts. There was a small function acknowledging the efforts of employees who worked selflessly for Sapna. Our general secretary gave special thanks to donors and gave a brief summary of the annual report of Sapna which was followed by songs based on Gandhiji, sung by students of classes 4-7. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks.

District Kabbadi Competition: Students of classes 6 & 7 represented the school at the District Kabbadi Tournament. They played very well and two of our students received a Gold Medal.

Diwali celebration: Students of Class 7 made Rangoli and a small puja was performed. Students were given prasad after puja. After the puja teachers did an activity with their respective classes.

Children’s Day: Children were told about the importance of this day. The morning thought and talk was based on this.

Art of Living workshop: Art of Living organized a five-day workshop based on inculcating moral values among children. Students of class5-7 participated in this workshop.

Christmas Celebration: On December 25, students celebrated Christmas. Various activities were planned and the students and teachers circled the Christmas tree, and sang and danced on jingle bells.

The total students covered under our programme are 226.

Despite the lockdown, students are studying in the villages. As the class size is small, each and every child is given proper attention. Teachers help the children resolve academic issues.


Challenges faced and next steps

The pandemic has been a very challenging time for Sapna Shikshalaya. Ensuring continuity of the teaching-learning process and delivery of educational content has been extremely challenging as, first, our teachers come from Alwar town that is around 10 kms away and, second, our students are girls from an underprivileged background from the neighbouring villages.

We decided that instead of students coming to school, the school shall go to the students.

As the school reopens at Sapna Shikshalaya we are preparing children to follow rules to keep them safe. Children are informed time and again about Do’s and Don’ts to save themselves from Covid-19.

Though the immunity of the children is quite strong, it is necessary to follow all protocols related to COVID-19 to prevent its effect. Children fall under the most vulnerable group of our population.

During the Covid period, we couldn't have regular classes in school, so we thought of the alternative of village class, as we knew that no classes meant children would be deprived of education and they will forget everything which we have taught. Being an English Medium school, we were apprehensive about it. We started with our classes in villages. It helped the teachers to be with their students and continue with their academic development.Teachers are regularly going to the villages to teach students. Teachers decorated the premises by making Rangoli outside the NGO premises and near Flagpole. The notice board was also decorated. Peepal baba was brought to unfurl the national flag. As children couldn’t be called for Republic Day Celebration, the teachers were instructed to go online so that the students could also participate in the unfurling of the National Flag and National Anthem. After the National Anthem, many students presented poems and speeches online. This was a unique experience for children as they felt involved in Republic Day Celebration even though they were not present there physically. Sapna Ma’am spoke to the children about the importance of this day.The programme ended with the distribution of laddoos to all the staff and patients at Vijay Mandir. After the celebration teachers were dropped at Biodiversity Park near Bala Qila for a picnic.Parents Teachers MeetAt the end of the session, the PTM was organized following the Covid norms. The parents were called in different time slots so there is less crowd Home Visit: Home visits are an important feature of Shikshalaya. Teachers visit the houses of students to know how they are coping with the pandemic and if they are facing any major issues which can be solved. Even teachers get to know the environment in which the child is staying. Nutrition: Sapna Shikshalaya has always emphasized the role of a proper and healthy diet. Teachers remain in constant touch with parents regarding their child’s diet. Though the students were coming for village class the teachers continued to be strict regarding the diet of children. Sapna Shikshalaya provided almonds and bananas on daily basis and also provided Bournvita regularly.Online Classes: As the lockdown started the teachers reverted to the online classes. They fixed their schedule for classes. Teachers of the preprimary and primary level ensured that they emphasize oral work rather than writing. The mode of teaching was learning by doing. Classes 1 to 7 teachers taught the chapters. They also took oral assessments. Prayer before starting the class: It is mandatory that before starting classes students should recite prayers. Teachers speak to the children about their moral responsibility and how they should respect their elders. Classes: Classes have been functional since June. Teachers are visiting various villages and teaching students and ensuring that they give the best and quality education despite many constraints eg As many classes are conducted on terraces when there is rain it has to be shifted to other places. Teachers devote 2 to 3 hrs in each village. Teachers have been assigned a timetable schedule as per their subject and class. They go to different villages depending on the distribution of the students of their respective classes. The schedule is designed in such a way that it covers all the classes and subjects for all students.

The current pandemic has been a very challenging time for Sapna Shikshalaya. Ensuring continuity of the teaching-learning process and delivery of educational content has been extremely challenging as, first, our teachers come from Alwar town that is around 10 km away and, second, our students are girls from an underprivileged background from the neighbouring villages.The main method of communication during these times has been mobile phones, the internet and computers. Our students do not have access to computers at home but, due to the prevalence of mobile internet, they could arrange smartphones using which we conducted online classes and interactive sessions. Even after this arranging of smartphones, it has not been easy for many students to arrange internet data packages.We have tried our best to communicate with students by sending printed documents to their homes, teachers calling up students and making WhatsApp video group calls. Challenge was the lack of smartphones with the parents. It was great to see parents trying their best to arrange smartphones even from their neighbours and relatives so that their girls were not deprived of a good education. But few children were unable to study online as their parents don’t have access to smartphones.To overcome these problems, we decided that instead of students coming to school, the school shall go to the students.School and school-supported programs are fundamental to child and adolescent development and well-being and provide children with academic instruction, either in-person or virtually; social and emotional skills; safety; reliable nutrition; physical /occupational /speech therapy; mental health services; health services; and opportunities for physical activity, among other benefits. Beyond supporting the educational development of children and adolescents, school plays a critical role in addressing racial and social inequity. As such, it is critical to reflect on the differential impact the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated school closures have had on different racial and ethnic groups and populations facing inequities. Families rely on the school to provide a safe, stimulating, and enriching space for children to learn; appropriate supervision of children; opportunities for socialization; and access to school-based mental, physical, and nutritional health services.At Sapna Shikshalaya we are preparing children to follow rules to keep them safe. Children are informed time and again about Do’s and Don’ts to save themselves from Covid-19. Teachers shall be given the responsibility to ensure that regular training of parents and children about the third wave is provided so that they can save themselves from its effect.Though the immunity of the children is quite strong but with many mutant viruses strains to emerge, it is necessary to follow all protocols related to COVID-19 to prevent its effect. Children fall under the most vulnerable group of our population. In contrary to adults, it is very difficult to plan for various preventive and management strategies in children due to their wide age range and anatomical, physiological, immunological and psychological differences. This protocol will provide an understanding of the approach for care of children at home and support parents, caregivers and practitioners to take care of children during the pandemic of COVID-19. 1. Other things to keep in mindSpecial care by Sapna Shikshalaya• Teachers have been continuously ensuring the safety of their students during the lockdown. Teachers were in constant touch with the parents, visited their houses, distributed rations, thermometers, sanitiser and masks to every household. • With the help of the local medical authority, Shikshalaya initiated the drive to ensure that all the adults in the students’ households are vaccinated. Parents were informed in the morning of the location of the nearby vaccination camps. In a few camps teachers were there to ensure that parents and grandparents get themselves vaccinated.• NGO Sapna has come with one more initiative of telemedicine where our teachers and students are enrolled so whenever they require medical facility, they can utilize these services free of cost.• The parents have been informed about the Ambulance services and oxygen services which are provided to people if required.

On January 24 National girl child day she participated in the programme organised by the women and the child welfare department. She recited an English poem confidently which was applauded by people. Now she helps her classmates in academics and takes a keen interest in academics. She loves to participate in co-curricular activities. She even helps her sister in academics. SAPNA started a pre-primary school named SAPNA Shikshalaya in 2015. In 2019, The school was recognized by the Govt of Rajasthan (Department of Education) and accorded a middle school status.
170 girls have enrolled in the school in academic session 2019-20. There are 11 teachers with an experienced principal and education motivator to supervise and coordinate their work. A well-designed curriculum focusses on developing the oral and written skills.
Updates & Highlights of some of the events:



  1. Celebration of Gnadhi Jayanti on 2nd October 2020- The day started with special assembly where the theme for “Thought for the day” and “Talk” was the life of Gandhiji. This was followed by a small quiz on Gandhiji. After the special assembly students went to their respective classes. Teachers took attendance and then students of classes 1 to 5 came out for shramdaan. The classes Nursery to Prep did a painting activity on Gandhiji. After the shramdaan, students had their lunch and got ready for the celebration programme.The programme started with the beautiful bhajan “Vaishnav Jan To” by students of classes 4 & 5. Then nursery children danced on the song “Vande Mataram’ followed by LKG Dance on “Hum Chote Chote Bacchhe Hain”. Another favourite bhajan of Gandhiji “Raghupati Raghav Rajaraam” was sung by classes 4 & 5. The children of class 1 danced on the song “Chhoona Hain Aasmaan” followed by a skit of class 3 “Gandhi Ek Yatra”
    Class 2 students presented a dance on “Desh Mera Rangeela’ followed by Prep Dance “Bande Mein Dum”. Then class 4 displayed their skills through a beautiful skit “Swachh Bharat”. Programme ended with dance “Ae Watan Azaad Reh Tu”.



  2. October 27th Diwali celebration: Children of class 5 made Rangoli and there was dance performance. In the assembly, children were told the reason why we celebrate this festival.



  3. November 14th, 2020, Children's Day Celebration: School celebrated the Children’s Day where students of classes LKG to 1 went to Nehru Garden, enjoyed the train ride and water ride while students of 2 to 5 went to museum. There they saw the costumes, war armaments. They were totally mesmerized by it.



  4. December 25th 2020 Christmas Celebration: On December 25 students celebrated Christmas. Various activities were planned and each class came with the respective presentation and in the end the students and teachers circled the Christmas tree and sang and danced on jingle bells.

Program Update


SAPNA started a pre-primary school named SAPNA Shikshalaya in 2015. The aim of the school was to provide 'quality, flexible and relevant learning' and targets poor girls in rural areas. A nominal fee of Rs.16 a day is charged to promote ownership towards the program. The program is envisaged to empower poor and marginalized girls with capability, freedom and choice to follow their dream.

“SAPNA SHIKSHALAYA” celebrated its Annual Day on 23rd of March, 2019. The Chief guests Sudhir Pratap Singh (Gen Secretary, SAPNA) Prof Ranvir Singh (Secretary, SAPNA) Mrs. Nikunj Sanghi, some ambassadors of SAPNA and parents of girls graced the occasion. The function started at 10:00 am. Mr. Niranjan Chandrul (Educational Motivator, SAPNA Education Division) welcomed the chief guests, ambassadors and all the parents present in the function. Lightening of the lamp by Prof. Ranvir Singh & Sudhir Pratap Singh marked the inauguration of the Annual Function.


The program was ushered by Saraswati Vandana sung by our tiny tots with Niranjan Chandrul. The tiny tots of SAPNA sung some rhymes. Next was a dance performed by junior girls of SAPNA Shikshalaya on Nani Teri Morni & Ungli Pakad ke chalna respectively. This was followed by skit on save the girl child. After that prizes were distributed to girls who have performed well during the academic session and for other things.
In the last the General Secretary Sudhir Pratap Singh addressed the gathering and put his thoughts on role of education in country, vision of SAPNA SHIKSHALAYA and shared future plans for our tiny tots.

Story from the field


Aditi D/O Veerwati lives in Kasba Dehra. She was 3 years old, when her father passed away. In April, 2017 two other parents from village Kasba Dehra came to Sapna Shikshalaya for the admission of that one girl and said, “Aditi needs good education and her mother is not able to pay the school fee.” School management called Aditi with her mother. When Aditi came to school for the first time she was not willing to talk to anyone. She was wearing torn cloths and was scared of people around her. As her mother was unable to pay school fee so, the school fee was waived off. The girl was 7 years old at the time of admission. She used to go in Class- I to the Government school of the village but she didn’t even know alphabets, numbers etc. She was admitted to class- PREP. This was so challenging for teachers to bring her up to that class level. But due to teacher’s hard work and dedication of the girl, she has been able to read and understood the small sentences independently. She actively participates in all class activities. She regularly comes to school very tidy. She has been promoted to class - I in March 2019. We are very happy to see such a great change in her life.

Program Update


We at SAPNA believe that girl education is essential for the equitable
advancement of society. Improvements in girls' education benefits the status of the family and empowers women. Sapna Started a pre-primary school on 8th July 2105 named 'SAPNA Shikshalaya'. This program was for economically deprived and underprivileged girls. Currently 146 girls are studying in the school. There are 10 teachers under an Educational Motivator and a Coordinator to supervise and coordinate their work. A well designed curriculum focuses on developing the oral and written skills. Use of teaching aids enables the children to learn pre-writing and pre-reading concepts. The school provides uniform, books, stationary and nutrition. Girls are provided healthy food in school to overcome nutritional deprivation that often exists due to poverty and gender bias at home. The Girl child of SAPNA Shikshalaya and Pankhuri celebrated the 72 th Independence day with great enthusiasm and respect at Vijay Mandir, Alwar. The ceremony started at 8 AM in the Vijay Mandir premises with crowd of our girl child, Anandam inmates, SAPNA staff , and parents.
The Coordinator Alwar Chapter & Education Motivator welcomed the gathering. To commemorate the sovereignty of our nation, Shri Jagi Ram Ji (First Inmate of home) unfurled the tricolour flag and all in unison the crowd sang the National Anthem and expressed the joy of our freedom.
The tiny tots of SAPNA Shikshalaya sang the patriotic song that awakened everyone's felling towards our Mother Land, next was a dance performance by Nursery and Prep 1 girls of SAPNA Shikshalaya on songs Nanha--Munna Rahi Hu" and "Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani" respectively. The girls of class 3rd and 4th performed a skit on cleanliness. The Programme concluded up with the Vote of thanks. At the end sweets were distributed to the students.
Indeed, it was a day of joy, a day to love and respect our country and make it a better place for Indians to live and experience the freedom, peace and unity in diversity.

We at SAPNA believe that girl education is essential for the equitable advancement of society. Improvements in girls' education benefits the status of the family and empowers women. In this background SAPNA began 'Support the Girl Child Program' named 'Pankhuri' in 2010 and later on 8th July 2015 established a pre-primary school named 'SAPNA Shikshalaya'. This program was for economically deprived and underprivileged girls. The aim of the school was to provide 'quality, flexible and relevant learning' and targets poor girls in rural areas. A nominal fee of Rs.16 a day is charged to promote ownership towards the program. The program is envisaged to empower poor and marginalized girls with capability, freedom and choice to follow their dream. The program nurtures the overall development of the girls. This entails hygiene, discipline, punctuality, nutrition and overall turnout, in addition to learning and personality development. Currently 132 girls are studying in the school. There are ten teachers under an Educational Motivator to supervise and coordinate their work. A well designed curriculum focuses on developing the oral and written skills. Use of teaching aids enables the children to learn pre-writing and pre-reading concepts.


Celebration of Annual Function
'SAPNA SHIKSHALAYA' celebrated its Annual Day on 27th of March, 2018. The Chief guests Sudhir Pratap Singh (Gen Secretary, SAPNA) Prof Ranvir Singh (Secretary, SAPNA) Smt Vinita Dhupar (Education Consultant, SAPNA) some ambassadors of SAPNA and parents of girls graced the occasion. The function started at 10:00 am. Mr. Niranjan Chandrul (Educational Motivator, SAPNA Education Division) welcomed the chief guests, ambassadors and all the parents present in the function. Lightening of the lamp by Prof. Ranvir Singh & Sudhir Pratap Singh marked the inauguration of the Annual Function.
The program was ushered by Saraswati Vandana sung by our tiny tots with Niranjan Chandrul. The tiny tots of SAPNA sung some rhymes. Next was a dance performed by junior girls of SAPNA Shikshalaya on 'School Chale Hum'.' & 'Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani'' respectively. In the last the results were announced and prizes distributed to girls who have performed well during the academic session.

Tiny tots rejoice and learn aplenty on festivals!

Holi was celebrated in all its splendour at Snehalaya. The children had a safe and happy holi at the two homes. The joy is evident from the happy faces and energy in the children in this video. Watch it and soak in all the colours!


The tiny tots at Sapna Shikshalaya and Pankhuri are made to experience various cultures through the celebrations of all kinds of events and festivals. Over the last couple of months, they celebrated Christmas, Diwali and Children’s day with great enthusiasm.
Diwali was celebrated with great pomp and splendor. The girls were told the story behind the festival, and taught a beautiful song, which was followed by sweets distribution. The girls were overjoyed to be greeted by a Santa with a bag full of treats and goodies on the occasion of Christmas. They learnt the importance of sharing and caring from their teachers, who used examples from Jesus’s life to illustrate how they could help each other. The children loved participating in all the activities organized on the occasion of Children’s day - they were very happy with all the special attention coming their way. The day ended with a Prize Distribution ceremony. The rest of the children didn’t lose heart either, for they received chocolates too!
