Educate an underprivileged child in Kashmir

Thank you!

This program is fully funded because of donors like you.

Impact

Every monthly donation helps to educate more children like Taliya

Taliya Noor's father earns approximately Rs. 1500/- ($24) per month. He was unable to make ends meet and take care of a family of five. CHINAR met her family and selected for the Remote Child Sponsorship Program (RCSP).

Through the program monetary help was provided for the school expenses including books, school fees, stationery, uniforms etc. Taliya was then able to continue her studies. She is now in class 7 and happy to continue her studies in her school with her best friends.

Due to this aid, Taliya's education was saved and she can now look forward a better future. Supporting the fees and essentials of a child in Kashmir can help in building the future of an underserved state.

Challenges faced and next steps

Remote Child Sponsorship Program (RCSP) provides scholarship up to 12th class and 14 students had to appear in class 12th board exams in Nov 2022 but due to change in the academic session (from Nov to March) students were given additional 5 months help which was beyond the provision of budget of this programme. In addition to that, extra tuition fees, notes/books were provided to 12th class students based on the assessment that was conducted in the month of September 2022, so that the students can prepare better for their final board exams. CK tries its best to make sure that the students enrolled under the education programme are taken care of in the best possible way. In the month of Nov 2022, the target to enrol more than 100 students in the year 2022 was also achieved. CK also wants more and more girls to get sponsorship so that they can excel in their life and fulfill their dreams & goals. Currently, girls make up 59% of the total children enrolled in this programme (RCSP).

CK provided the students with; Stationary and Books, School/Bus Fee, Tuition Fee, & School Bags, School Uniform and the amount for the same was reimbursed to the child after producing the proper voucher at CK office.

The children are also provided help in the form of monthly monetary help to support basic necessities like food and medicine for the child. In addition to monthly monetary help CK also provided help in the form of food kits, reconstruction of houses, and financial help to families of the children supported under this programme.

Challenges faced and next steps

Challenge;

• Children supported under this programme belong to poor families and at times face many difficulties in managing their basic needs like food etc. which affects the studies of children as well.

Next Step;

• CHINAR Kashmir has decided to help such families financially as well so that the family’s basic needs are fulfilled as well.

Stories from the ground

CHINAR Kashmir (CK) aims to reach out to the most destitute families who have no or meagre source of income to sustain their families. The education of their children is the last priority for them. So their children drop out of school midway in order to help their families earn livelihood. Intervention by CK helps children of such families to continue their studies at least till 12th class.

Since the students enrolled in this programme belong to low-income families and cannot afford to educate their children. Without our support these children have high chances of getting dropped out from schools.

During CK’s field visit to one of the beneficiary - Muskaan of Pahloo, Nishat, Srinagar; who is studying in 12th class said " To me CHINAR is a family. CK has helped me a lot because my family was not in a position to continue my studies. I am really thankful to CK for helping me in tough times. CK paid my school fees, provided me school bag, stationery and much more. CK also provided us food kits from time to time. I would not have been able to continue my studies without the support and help of CHINAR. CK also kept an eye on me by way of conducting assessment so as to see my progress."

Since the students enrolled in this programme belong to low income families and cannot afford to educate their children. Without our support these children have high chances of getting dropped out from schools. So the progress of every child in continuing their education is a story in itself. Quoting one of our beneficiary "...help from your organization is proving to be extremely helpful without that it would have been next to impossible for me to continue my studies" - Zeenat from Srinagar.

In an effort to reach out to more children, CHINAR has worked really hard to enroll nineteen more children in need of support into the Remote Child Sponsorship Programme this year. Eight of their earlier beneficiaries from this programme also cleared their 10th and 12th class Board Exams with flying colors. A few of these students were felicitated by CHINAR for their exemplary performance. Apart from providing their beneficiaries with financial help, CHINAR also helps them in other ways- one of the students was given financial assistance for undergoing squint surgery.
