Support a child in their journey from childhood to adulthood

Impact

Building lifeskills to build a better future

Adolescence is such a critical phase in everyone’s lives. It may either make your life or ruin it. Hence, it becomes extremely important to have timely interventions and create a postive impact on the children. Here is one such story of 12 year old Yashasvi Jaydev Shende, studying in 7th grade in Ashok Vidyalay, Rengepar Kotha.

Yashasvi comes from a joint family with many people around. As an adolescent from the village, she has to follow numerous restrictions like not talking to boys in the neighborhood. The school teacher and the Magic Bus SSO identified her as timid and shy. She would get angry and talk arrogantly with her friends if she got out while playing any game. So, special attention was given to her. The school teacher kept interacting with her during every session to address these concerns.

With the delivery of lifeskill sessions, Yashasvi gradually opened up and shared about the restrictions at home and not being able to communicate with others or even know how to talk about the issues that bother her. She gradually picked up the skill of working in a team and got a sense of sportsmanship. Yashasvi learnt to deal with her emotions and tried to open up with her friends. The teacher also noticed and appreciated the difference and improvement in her behavior.

Your help will ensure in imparting the much needed and often overlooked lifeskills for youth like Yashasvi.

Program Description

The Magic Bus programme is one of the largest poverty alleviation programmes in India working with nearly 400,000 children and 9000 trained volunteer mentors in 22 States of the country. Magic Bus works with some of the world’s poorest children and young people, taking them from a childhood full of challenges to a life with meaningful livelihoods. Moreover, they equip some of India’s poorest children and young people with the skills and knowledge they need to grow up and be successful, to move out of poverty, and to take control of their future. These life-skills, ranging from education and gender equality to health and employability, are taught by youth volunteers from the communities, supported and trained through Magic Bus’ unique mentorship programme.

The programme we deliver have strong grounding in academic research and are based on classical learning theories. Sporting activities and games are structured into each session to make them fun and appealing to our children. Sessions are designed to represent real-life situations and challenges so children are able to relate these back to their daily lives.

Our youth-centered Livelihoods Program connects the aspirations and potential of young people to existing or new market opportunities, and is based on the premise that livelihoods must be sustainable.

Under our SCALE programme model - we deliver life-skill sessions through government teachers along with awareness and behaviour components that improve the socio-emotional skills, resilience, perceived self-efficacy, building aspiration, etc. among the children. We deliver the Community Connect component by engaging a team of local community coordinators who work with the School Management Committee to fill infrastructure gaps such as separate girls toilet, drinking water facility, etc.. Coordinators who engage with parents and community leaders to bring more awareness for the importance of delaying girls’ age of marriage and importance of children completing school with objective to bring the focus on economic value for parents to make informed choices.
