Impact

Every monthly donation helps children like Pavan get special education

Pavan Teja hails from a poor family in Guntur District, Andhra Pradesh, where his father is a daily wage earner and his mother, a coolie. Pavan was diagnosed with hearing impairment at the age of two.

Traumatised by his condition and unaware of other options, his parents enrolled him in a regular school in the neighborhood where he did not show much progress. It was a while before they heard about Ashray Akruti. Happy with the care that Pavan would receive, they enrolled him in the school.

He stays in the hostel and receives the special education that he needs. Pavan has shown remarkable progress and his parents are extremely happy with his improvement and are grateful for the support provided.

Program Description

Ashray Akruti provides education to hearing-impaired children in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Beneficiaries are mostly identified through medical camps and referrals from doctors. With a team of qualified staff to cater to their special needs, these students are taught by the oral-aural method which combines speech, use of residual hearing and speech reading.

The child is trained to use his/her hearing and develop expressive speech. Regular state syllabus is followed in the classrooms along with speech therapy and auditory training. Around 60 children from low-income families who cannot afford the special education stay in the residential home. The residential home provides them with safe accommodation, food, care, and guidance.

Donations made to this program support the rent of the hostel, cooking expenses, toiletries, laundry, and administrative cost. When you donate to the program, you will help in educating a poor differently-abled child whose journey you can follow.

Ashray Akruti

"When the winds of change blow, few build walls and others build windmills"- This saying aptly defines Ashray Akruti's birth. The founder Mr. Babu drew his inspiration from a hearing-impaired family member and with a vision to provide a life of dignity to people with disability, he established Ashray Akruti in 1996.

A special educator himself, Mr. Babu is trained to deal with the hearing-impaired. Statistics say that 2 in 1000 children born in India are deaf and 6 in 1000 children born in Andhra Pradesh /Telangana are born deaf. Recognizing this need, a special school for children with hearing loss was started with five children. With his unfaltering dedication and commitment to serve these children in need; what started with 5 children now caters to the Educational and Vocational needs of about 550 children and youth with a disability.

From providing special education, the organization has now diversified into other areas in health, education and vocational training to address the needs of people with disability.
