Found abandoned on Mumbai roads, Sonam is now a medical professional

Sonam was found by the police abandoned and wandering on the roads when she was 6 years old. All attempts to find her parents were in vain and so, they registered her with the Juvenile Welfare Board.

Upon the advice of the Juvenile Welfare Board, they enrolled her in the Bal Gruha run by the Shraddhanand Mahilashram.

Sonam grew up in the Bal Gruha with other children like herself. She was given the love and care that she deserved.

She grew up as an Ashramkanya, as the girls who live in the shelter home are lovingly called. She grew up under the care of qualified social workers who nurtured her. They looked after her educational and emotional needs.

Sonam was a lovely and quiet girl. She completed her Higher Secondary from Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey College. When she turned 18, as she had no place to go, she moved to the Shraddhanand Mahilashram's Aadhar Gruha.

She was always fascinated by nurses. She used to observe well dressed nurses in the hospital in her childhood. When it was time to pick a career, she expressed her willingness to become a nurse.

She applied to the General Nursing Midwifery course in J.K. Somayya Hospital. She cleared her entrance exam, interview and a medical fitness test and got selected to the three and a half year nursing course.

After completing the course, she did a six-month internship in K.G. Somayya Hospital in Mumbai. They were so happy with her hard work and skill as a nurse that she got offered a job as a staff nurse in the same hospital.

Sonam got married by accepting a proposal that she received through the ashram. The couple is now blessed with a child.

Sonam is continuing to work. She went on to become the department in charge in the NICU Department and then a senior staff.

Many abandoned girls like Sonam who would have grown up on the streets with no future are now happy and contributing members of the society.

Your help can make many more abandoned girls like Sonam find a safe shelter so they can make a life for themselves. You can donate to their living and medical expenses in the Aadhar Gruha. You can give with confidence because every program listed is GIVEASSURED.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Shraddhanand Mahilashram provides shelter, care and protection to women and also plays a vital role in the rehabilitation of destitute and underprivileged women. At present there are 34 women in our Adhargruh. We take care of their basic needs, health and education. We have professional social workers, staff, specialized doctors, teachers, residential and non-residential staff to look after their education and emotional needs. From January to June 2022 various online and offline activities were conducted to enhance their skills and overall development.

Challenges faced and next steps

Wanting to make a decent living is one of the first priorities of women in shelter homes. Shraddhanand Mahilashram is only a temporary shelter for them. After receiving some form of educational or vocational training at the shelter, they are keen to stand on their own feet and start income generation at the earliest possible opportunity. We help them in achieving this goal by conducting aptitude tests to map their interest capacity. We conduct individual career counseling sessions and suggest appropriate vocational trade where required. Our goal is to give them the resources to shape them into mature, independent thinking adults.

Based on the area of interest of women staying in this institute, they are sent to professional or vocational courses (Industrial training institute / B.Voc graphic and multimedia / appalled art). Some attend regular colleges (commerce / Arts). We have in house tailoring and embroidery classes. The products made by them are sold at exhibitions and part of the income is credited in each girl's bank account. On receiving suitable marriage proposals many of them in accordance with their wishes are married through this institution and rehabilitated in mainstream society. In the coming months more activities are being planned for these less fortunate women

Stories from the ground

Shraddhanand Mahilashram is an oasis of calm in a troubled world. An unwed mother approached this institution for shelter during the month of May 2022 because she was unable to take responsibility for her child born out of wedlock. Here she was provided with safe shelter. After several counseling sessions with her, she decided to surrender her child for rehabilitation through adoption. The said woman is now living a well contented life. By supporting the living expenses of women staying in our home you make our efforts go even further.
