Four-year-old malnourished Caleb receives the strength to grow up to become a football player

Caleb was a destitute boy who lived in the slums of Mumbai.

His living environment was not conducive to his emotional and physical well being, characterized by struggles.

When he was just 4 years old, he began to face severe health conditions because of poverty and neglect.

It was then that one of Mahima's staff identified Caleb and took him under their care. He was enrolled in the shelter home.

Mahima Home has taken Caleb into their care. The two house parents and the staff take care of him and nurture him like family.

As a top priority, Caleb was put through a complete medical checkup. He received a special diet of eggs, bread, milk, protein-rich foods, whole wheat, rice, lentils, and vegetables. He also received beverages, biscuits, and fruits.

He also received supplements like tonics and medication. With proper diet and care, his weight and health status improved. He soon overcame malnutrition. His weight and health status soon became age-appropriate.

Once he was strong again, he was enrolled in a good school.

Today, Caleb is an energetic and skilled football player today who enjoys playing for his school team!

He is a good student in his English medium school. He is ready to face his future with physical and mental strength and vitality.

Program Description

Sahaara’‘s ‘‘Mahima Children’‘s Home’‘ is a shelter for parentless children and children whose parents are unable to look after them. The Home was started in July 1999 with only a couple of children.

Donations to the program contribute to the food, milk, and clothing for one child at the center.

The home was started with the aim to provide shelter to homeless and desolate children, including street children and neglected slum children.

These destitute children are easy and helpless victims of abuse and bad influences. They are desperately in need of a family, and that is what the Mahima Children’‘s Home provides them.

The home is a haven for boys who are either orphans, have terminally ill parents, or are children of trafficked women who are unable to care for them.

Mahima provides these children with more than just their basic needs. Holistic rehabilitation is offered to fourteen children through a home environment with dedicated caregivers.

At Mahima, they believe that this is just the beginning.

In a family atmosphere, these boys are nurtured and raised to believe that dreams that were once far away are now within their grasp!

Starting with 2 children, the home currently houses 14 children.

When you donate to this program, you give vulnerable children a safe home and good nutrition that they need to be healthy. This amount sponsors the fortnightly food expenses a child.

The boys have always had a good appetite and they eat well and are healthy. There is a good mix of meals with their activities which helps them utilize and build their strength accordingly. Due to this, they have great immune system and are not very prone to diseases and illnesses that can bear them down. Other than the occasional cough and cold, they haven’t become sick. They regularly play football and other outdoor games in the society compound.

Despite the lockdown constraints, the staff was able to maintain a healthy diet for all the children at the home. There were some fluctuations with the prices of food that needed to be purchased as per the recommendation for their nutritional needs. All the meals provided to the children are as per the recommended diet of a professional nutritionist.

The quality of food provided to the children for their holistic development has always been maintained well at the home. The children enjoy the meals that they are provided with. The children are also given vitamin supplements on a regular basis to keep their immune system healthy. They are also given de-worming tablets on a regular basis. All of these factors help ensure the good health of the children with the food that is provided in the homes.
