Little S.R battling with life

Master S.R had a severe stomach ache and vomiting when he was 3 1/2 years old. His parents took him to the doctor who managed to get his vomiting stop but his stomach ache continued. Further tests revealed that he has an abdominal Neuroblastoma, a common cancer among children of this age.

He was referred to DEAN Foundation's unit. His condition deteriorated after chemotherapy and he was given symptomatic treatment. His parents wanted to take him home and make him spend his remaining days with his family. But his stomach ache and vomiting continued. He required constant medical attention. DEAN Foundation then convinced his parents to regularly come for their out-patient facility and they were promised full support from the foundation's side. S.R is now 5 and still battling with a life threatening cancer. Donate to help DEAN Foundation to continue its efforts to provide some relief to this poor child. You can donate with confidence because every program on our platform is GIVEASSURED.

Program Description

DEAN Foundation provides palliative care to the vulnerable sections of the society in Chennai and its neighbouring districts . They help the destitute, homeless and afflicted women and children living below poverty line and suffering from terminal, irreversible, advanced, incurable diseases like cancer - both malignant and non-malignant, AIDS, etc.

One of their goals is to be sensitive and responsive to the special requirements of each individual and their families through the highest quality hospice care.

How it works:

Patients with advanced diseases come to their Outpatient Centres for treatment. Besides, the Home Care Team visits patients who are bed ridden or home bound till they die or move out of physical proximity.

The patients are looked after by a team of trained professionals including a social worker.

DEAN Foundation, Hospice and Palliative Care Centre

DEAN Foundation provides Palliative Care services to the urban poor of Chennai, Coimbatore and Kancheepuram districts. Patients are referred to DEAN Foundation by doctors. They also approach through word of mouth referrals, website and through social media.

Over 80% of the patients are from the lower income group. With no financial means, terminal illnesses like cancer leaves them traumatised both physically and mentally. Cancer patients form about 78% of the total patients treated.

The organisation primarily works in the area of pain relief. Once diagnosed with terminal illness, treatments are gradually stopped and patients are only left with pain management during the rest of their lives. This involves both medicines that are ingested as well as periodic change in dressing of the tumours. The family members of the patients are also trained to nurse the patients and administer the medicines as required.

There are two forms of services - Out-patient services and Home Based Care. Out-patient care is for patients who are able to come to the office or have family members who are mobile. Home Based Care is primarily for patients who are immobile. In addition to this they also work with the Department of health & Family Welfare and State health Society, Govt. of Tamil Nadu actively to provide training and create awareness.
