Sponsor nutritious food to provide strength to children with HIV to undergo treatment

Impact

A nutrition bundle that helped Sateesh find the strength to be a normal child

Sateesh is the only son of his parents. Both his parents were HIV positive. Due to this, Sateesh was born HIV positive. He lost his parents to this dreaded disease at the tender age of 9. He then began to live with his aged grandmother.

His grandmother cares for him a lot. However, she does not earn enough to feed Sateesh the right kind of food that he needs to fight the disease.

Priyadarshini Seva Mandali's outreach workers identified Sateesh during one of his hospital visits. He was very sick and was even unable to walk. His CD4 count was dangerously low. A person is diagnosed with HIV if their CD count is less than 200 as against a healthy range of 500-1500 in healthy people.

Priyadarshini Seva Mandali enrolled him in the monthly rations program. He receives a monthly nutrition bundle that is planned to give him the nutrition that he needs to withstand the strong HIV treatment. They also provide travel expenses for them to visit the center to collect the monthly rations.

This nutritional support and the guidance of PSM has helped Sateesh a lot. His health condition has improved a lot with the regular nutritious food.

Sateesh is now healthy enough to carry on his regular activities like a child. His grandmother is pleased that she can feed him a good meal every day.

You can also help needy children with HIV with the nutrition to withstand the intense treatment. You can donate so that organizations like Priyadarshini Seva Mandali can bring help to patients who deserve it. You can give with confidence because every program listed is GIVEASSURED.

Program Description

Priyadarshini Seva Mandali runs a program to provide underprivileged orphaned HIV positive children with adequate nutrition to help them withstand the intense medical treatment and help them through recovery.

Donations to this program will contribute to a fund that will cover the cost of te monthly ration bundles given to the children.

Most of the children supported by this program are orphaned and are cared for by their grandparents or other guardians.

Priyadarshini Seva Mandali's outreach workers identify the children who need support from the government hospitals where they come for their CD4 test every month. Alternatively, they are also referred to by other nonprofits.

The outreach workers check the hospital records and prepare a list of the impoverished children. They then reach out to the guardians and invite them to Priyadarshini Seva Mandali's office. The children are then enrolled in the program. As a part of the program, PSM provides them with nutritious food. Priyadarshini Seva Mandali also refunds the travel expenses to and from the organization.

A ration bundle adequate to cover all nutritional requirements is handed over to the child's guardian. The children continue to receive the ration bundle every month. Additionally, new children get enrolled in the program as and when they pay their first visit to the hospital.

The contents of the ration bundle include

1 kg of groundnut

1.5 kgs of chickpeas

1.5 kgs of red gram

1 kg of Jaggery

1 kg of cooking oil

1 kg of millet (Ragi) powder

4 to 6 kgs of rice

2 kgs of idli mix

2 kgs of broken wheat (dalia)

A variety of spices

They also receive cash for vegetables and 3 liters of milk every month.

At present, close to 150 destitute children are enrolled in the program.

When you donate to this program, you help children affected with HIV get access to adequate nutrition and support their recovery.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Not only for the last six months; have we been continuing in our noble services of providing quality life to the orphaned poor kids suffering from HIV/AIDS. Our goal is to ensure that these kids under our care live a good normal life as any healthy children live. Apart from providing regular diagnosis services, medicines, we provide all the required rationing materials like cereals, pulses, rice, Ragi flour etc on a fortnightly basis as deems fit. We also instil in them the self-confidence that they have every right to live a normal healthy life despite suffering from HIV/AIDS. We also make them practice yoga, breathing exercises, meditation to keep them healthy in all respects. Milestones are indeed numerous to our credit. We cross them automatically through our dedicated services to these poor kids suffering from HIV/AIDS. Our main goal is to bring smiles and cheerfulness to the lives of these poor HIV afflicted kids. At the moment we are covering only a few cities and areas in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. We plan to extend our noble services in serving HIV/AIDS kids to a few more cities and districts in both States. Our dedicated services have left a deep impact on 25 to 30 people by improvising their life a great deal qualitatively. Health-wise and otherwise, they appear and look like any normal healthy kid. None can recognize that they are HIV/AIDS patients unless told. We mean to say, they are healthy and happy in all aspects of their life. We could help them maintain their health in good condition bringing cheerfulness in their lives.

Challenges faced and next steps

Serving HIV/AIDS children and providing them with a good quality of life is a difficult task and a big challenge. We cross all the hurdles that come across us and move forward with more determination remembering our goals and mission in this regard. Surmounting covid related hurdles isn't that easy with lots of restrictions like social distancing, wearing masks, and keeping oneself in good health. With our continuous monitoring of these kids under our care, we ensure that they stay safe, healthy and wealthy in all aspects of life. We would like to continue our program for the next 6 months and beyond just in the same vein

Vinay is no more a Orphan

Nutritious food is vital for good health and long life. Children deserve good nutritious food, especially the orphan, destitute and more specially the HIV affected children for they need more strength to bear the side-effects of powerful antibiotic medicines. Priyadarshini Seva Mandali is well aware of these facts. When we at PSM are providing medicines and medical care to these poor orphaned HIV affected children, we have also decided to provide them with the best of nutritious food so that they can have the stamina to bear the effects of powerful doses of antibiotics. We put all our children at PSM under strict dietary regimen in consultation with our doctors. We also ensure proper exercises to these children to keep them in good health hale and hearty. We ensure all the children under our care should lead a dignified quality life for years to come.

Hero Story

R. Vinay, a 12-year old kid was orphaned very early in his childhood. His parents died. He has two siblings. All the three children, who are orphaned by the death of their parents, went to live with their 70-year old grandmother. Sadly his grandmother too was poor and could not afford to feed all the three children. Unfortunately, Vinay was diagnosed as HIV positive by birth. For the last 10 years, Priyadarshini Seva Mandali took good care of this child Vinay. We have been providing regular checkups and prescribed medicines and especially very nutritious food on a regular basis. We even taught him breathing, yogic and other exercises to keep him fit physically and mentally. Today, under her due care and love, Vinay soon picked up his health. He is hale and hearty. He now never looks like he is an HIV patient. He has grown strong mentally and physically and is now a happy kid. Like Vinay, there are scores of kids that we have been taking care of under the loving care of Priyadarshini Seva Mandali providing them all the goodies in life like nutritious quality food, good medical attention including providing medicines and regular checkups. Our goal is to ensure these HIV affected children get the best of good food and medicines so that they can live a decent dignified qualitative life.
