Suman gets her right to dream

Suman was a 7-year-old child without any dreams. Simple joys like going to school and making friends were alien to her. Her father had a damaged kidney and her mother was a daily wage worker. Their extreme poverty neither allowed them to send her to school and nor were they able to fulfill her small needs.

Program Description

Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra (NBJK) is committed to encouraging the education of poor children by providing the required support. The field workers identify children from Government schools who drop out due to their family's economic conditions. Every village has a primary school but no high schools. The children have no means of transport, therefore, are forced to quit their education.

To combat this, NBJK established primary feeder-schools in the villages and high schools close to the village blocks. The children receive education up-to Grade V at the feeder schools and are then shifted to one of the five high schools. Over 3000 students receive education in the five high schools that cover over 90 villages.

The children who cannot afford to pay are provided education free of cost. When you support this program, you help a child like Mithilesh go to school, break the cycle of poverty and build his future.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Through Mission Every Girl in School, a total of 89 girls are supported for school fees, stationary and uniform to continue their studies. Under the program we sponsored those students who are good in studies but due to some family financial problems they are not able to continue their studies. Our intervention area is Chouparan block of Hazaribagh district.

Challenges faced and next steps

When schools reopen and offline classes are started after the pandemic, student attendance is a big challenge. Students have some misunderstanding regarding the precaution from COVID 19 and also they are not ready for COVID 19 vaccination. Awareness generation has been done by teachers for the success of COVID 19 vaccination drive. During the counseling session teachers invited Sahiya, Mukhiya, local health workers. Parents also participated in the session and cleared their misconceptions. Teachers of the school motivated them for girl child education too. After parents' consent, vaccination drive was run in school. Parents understand that girls are going to get support through Mission Every Girl in school program and they agree to restart education of their girl child, and that the attendance of girl students in school should also improve.

Stories from the ground

Pallavi Kumari is the daughter of Rajesh Ram and studying in class 9th. Before lockdown she was good in her studies and scored good marks in class. Her father is working as a labourer in different places. During lockdown he lost his work and came back to his village, doing cultivation in small pieces of land. Pallavi also performed well during online classes but when schools reopened she could not attend classes. When teachers contacted her parents they said they were in financial crisis so Pallavi's mother had to start working somewhere, Pallavi's younger brother and sisters also had to study, so they were unable to send Pallavi to school. When they talked to Pallavi they came to know that she was interested in her studies and wanted to be a teacher someday. Teachers informed her parents that Pallavi is already sponsored under Mission Every Girl in School Program and all school expenses are taken care of by that program. After counselling the parents, they were ready to send her to school.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

89 girls are getting help from Mission Every Girl in School. These girls are from CDDH and Amoli Apurwa school in Chouparan Block of Hazaribagh District. Girls enrolled in the program were facing problems continuing their education due to financial issues in their families, as some parents had lost their jobs due to the pandemic and were in a situation where they were not able to pay school fees. Girls enrolled in the program were supported with their fees to complete their secondary education and achieve their milestones. These girls have enough confidence and hope for a bright future.

Challenges faced and next steps

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the education system. After the situation became a bit better after the deadly 2nd wave of COVID-19, schools reopened in mid-September for higher classes. But attendance is not so good as many parents are not ready to send their children to school. Teachers from the school often visit students' homes and provide counselling to parents on sending their children to school. Before reopening the school, online classes were organized for students. The major problem we face is that students don’t have smartphones for attending daily classes. As a next step, the school will maintain all precautionary measures and arrange more classes to clear doubts and get notes and lessons for those who missed online classes.

Stories from the ground

Monika Kumari is studying in class 9th. She is from a small village which is located in Chouparan Block in Hazaribag District. She lives with her father and mother. She has 1 brother and 1 sister. Manika’s father is an agriculturist, who does agriculture work during the cultivation season and, in the off-season, works as a laborer in nearby cities or in other fields. It was very hard for Monika to continue her studies as the family income was not enough to support the education of all the children. Monika often goes to the field with her parents and older siblings to help and work. With the support from the program, Monika now attends online classes at home and sometimes visits her friend’s house to do group studies.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Mission Every Girl in School is helping 89 girls from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds to continue their education and get a better future. Girls receiving help are from two village schools located in Chouparan Block of Hazaribag District in Jharkhand State. Most of the girls getting help through this program were dropouts or were in the situation where their education would have stopped if not provided support for school fees. Supporting the education of girls through this program is helping in achieving great milestones like helping girls in completing their secondary education. This year total of 46 girls passed out class 10th with good scores and are willing to continue their higher education. Along with education girls also build their confidence through participating in extracurricular activities.

Challenges faced and next steps

Education was greatly impacted due to the pandemic. When the situation became a bit better, schools got opened in January for higher classes, but the deadly second wave of COVID led to the closing of schools again in the month of March. Final examinations got cancelled and led to a dilemma among children for their future. Online classes were organized for students, but rural students lack proper facilities and smartphones for attending daily classes. Teachers from village schools often used to visit students' homes, and sometimes students also used to contact and visit their teachers for clearing their doubts and getting notes and lessons. In the next 6 months, it has been planned to reach out to more girls through online classes and village visits. It is expected that the school will reopen in August. Then, the school will maintain all the precautionary measures and will conduct classes for the higher classes.

Stories from the ground

Chandani Kumari is 12 years old. She is studying in class 8. She is from a small village which is located in Chouparan Block in Hazaribag District. At home, she lives with her father, mother and 4 siblings that are 1 brother and 3 sisters. Chandani’s father is a marginal farmer, who does agriculture work during cultivation season, and in off-season works as a daily labour in nearby cities or in other fields. It was very hard for Chandani to continue her studies as family income was not enough to support the education of all the children. Chandani often used to go to the field with her parents and elder siblings to help and work. With the support from the program, Chandani's parents are a bit relieved from the tension for her education. Chandani now attends online classes at home and sometimes visit her friend’s house to do group study.

Ray of hope for Girl Students

#1

report image

Warm Greetings to all Donors!

Program “Mission Every girl in School” is providing support to 114 poor girls from rural schools of Jharkhand. Most of the girls belongs to very poor families and dropped out from schools after primary education. Prolonged lockdown due to COVID-19 deteriorated the financial condition of many poor families and it was hard for girls to rejoin the schools, but your kind support and help came as a “Ray of hope for these girls” and they are continuing their studies.
Due to COVID-19 lock down, all schools got closed since March 2020 and getting lessons in classroom stopped. Home works were assigned to girls to continue their self studies at home; it was difficult for girls to continue studies with fewer resources at home. During this period teachers approached girls by home visits and through phones and tried providing online classes and related notes. Only 50% of the girls had access to mobile phones. Teachers asked girls with mobile phones/smart phones to share their notes with other girls. Girls living near to teacher’s home, use to visit and clear their doubts in studies.
In month of December classes resumed for senior sections (class 9th and 10th) with appropriate guidelines of social distancing and sanitation. Schools are organizing regular classes; girls are happy to be back at school and are eagerly participating in games and curricular activities.
Your generous support will help the girls to complete their secondary education and aim for a successful future.
