Let us pledge for Kerala

Underprivileged people in Kerala need your help to rebuild their lives.

Kerala has a long rebuilding task ahead. Estimates of damages are in tens of thousands of crores, and over a million people are in relief camps. While the floods have affected the rich and poor equally, the poor face a much more difficult road ahead.

Goonj will work with the poor in Kerala to help them rebuild their lives. They have years of expertise in disaster relief and rehabilitation.

Goonj will focus on areas which are far flung and underserved communities. Their primary target will be areas that are more difficult to reach so as to avoid duplication of efforts by other organisations or the government.

As on date fund requirement stands at about INR 10 crore for the operation over a period over 1 year.

Goonj has already initiated action in the districts of Alappuzha, Idukki, Malappuram, Palakkad, Kannur and Wayanad and further expansion is in process.

It will take time, and commitment to rebuild Kerala. We cannot afford to let it be just another headline, and move on to the next breaking news. Ordinary people have been the true heroes in the story so far. And ordinary people like you can make the future better as well, by committing to help not just rescue, but also rebuild Kerala.

Let’s not forget those who have lost everything. Let’s not abandon them when they need us the most.

Let’s #PledgeForKerala.

Program Description

Goonj has an initial target to reach out to about 30,000 families in the next few months which will increase as their operations grow in Kerala and as more and more resources are gathered. To start with, the focus will be on providing relief kits to families and then to run interventions in schools, anganwadis & welfare centers.

To make sure no duplication of effort takes place, the focus is to try and fill the gaps in the areas where others have not reached or where people still need basic relief. One of the major focus is going to be on tribal population.

A typical kit will have a few kg of dry ration, some utensils, tarpaulin, mats, blanket and other essentials like sanitary pads, slippers etc. Clothing will happen as per need and acceptance. Goonj will also be focusing on other states also which are affected this monsoon including parts of karnataka and tamilnadu.

With their expertise in mobilizing material, their cost per relief kit is low. The breakup of fund requirements is as below:

Outreach to 30000 Impacted Families (Including logistics) = 9.00 cr

Institutional needs (Schools, Health centers) = 1.00 cr

Total = 10.00 CR

About The NGO

Goonj Logo

Goonj is an award-winning social enterprise working to build a bridge between the cities and villages. They focus on empowering the communities in far-flung villages to solve their own problems. For the last 19 years they have established a culture of mindful giving in urban India. They collect vast stocks of everyday necessities; from clothes to medicines, that would otherwise have been thrown away.

Every year Goonj processes thousands of tons of urban surplus material to run 3000+ development activities across rural India. With the clothes as motivation, people build bridges, dig wells, repair roads and other community building activities. These people don't get material as charity but earn it as a reward for their work.

The work that Goonj does brings attention to essential but often ignored needs of people. Millions of kilograms of donated cloth is turned into sanitary pads, Sujnis, and Aasans, giving livelihood to thousands of people.

Goonj is a mass movement connecting people in the cities and villages of India as equal stakeholders.

Program Update

Kerala floods, Cyclone Titli and Gaja affected millions this year and served grim reminder of how vulnerable we are amidst disaster, but more importantly it shows how important it is to stand by each other in tough times. Goonj received overwhelming response from people across the country to help us execute our relief works in Kerala during peak hours of disaster.

After the immediate relief works, Goonj has been successful in setting up three operatiol hubs in Kerala : Kochin, Wayad and Changassery to carry out sustained relief and rehabilitation works. Materials are sourced from Goonj city offices like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Cheni & Delhi to be systematically dispatched in affected regions on need based priority. With help of our local volunteers, partner organizations and team based in Kerala, we could reach out to individuals and institutions on a large scale.

The resources are channelized through carefully designed “Family Kits” comprising basic essentials like clothing, utility items, rations, toiletries etc for a family. However, Goonj’s family kits are not static and are revised and changed to match the immediate need of people affected by floods. Some of the items we intend to include- set of cooking and serving utensils, blanket and bed sheets, clothing and new under garments, sanitary pads, dry ration, tarpaulin, mats, cooker and occupatiol need items like fishing net, farming tools etc. It’s important to mention that we take average family size of 6 and try to take care of most of their material needs which makes this a big Family Kit.

As the water started receding and people started returning from the relief camps. The journey to a normal life is going to be a long one. This is the time when the world’s attention starts to shift slowly while the need for rehabilitation and sustained relief further amplifies. The focus has been on rebuilding & reviving community structures like repair and cleaning of roads, water bodies, backwaters, bridges, schools to support the communities to get back to normalcy.

As of November 18, we have reached out to 62,746 families with relief material in Kerala.

Story from the field

Resilience and spirit of the affected communities is to be applauded, when they have come together to take action and resolve their own issues. Here are a few stories from the field..

It was an astounding sight when 350 families came out on the roads and cleaned their hospital and church compound in yarambalam village in Erkulam District, Kerala. Post-floods, many parts of the district were flooded by plastic and other waste as well. Goonj not only motivated this flood hit community to get involved in cleaning their area, but also rewarded the people who participated with comprehensive Goonj Relief Kits. Last week people in Alleppy, Kerala cleaned 1000 ft of their cal... that was just the beginning... This time Goonj inspired 350 people of Veliyaperumpuzha village in Alleppy district to clean the full of plastic and muck water of their bathing ghat under Goonj’s Cloth for Work Initiative. Each participant was rewarded with Goonj’s comprehensive Family Material Kits.

The People of Kalyalpuram, Kuttad in the backwaters of Allepy (Kerala) need no introduction. Allepy is after all the true representation of Kerala, God’s Own Country. But it was also one of the worst affected by the recent floods. The boatmen families who use these waterways like we use roads were finding it tough to move as weeds (pola) were choking their cals. Goonj motivated the locals to solve this problem and brought together more than 100 villagers to clean a 1000ft × 25ft cal connected to the backwaters. Goonj rewarded their efforts with comprehensive Goonj Family Kits.
