Families in Kerala need your help to recover from the worst calamity of their lives
When the southwest monsoons hit Kerala in early June 2018, no one expected that this would be the state's worst nightmare. Over 400 lives have been lost and lakhs have had to leave their homes behind.
The HelpAge India Disaster Management Team is working in the 4 most affected districts - Wayanad, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta and Idukki.
As the flood waters recede, HelpAge's main focus will be on prevention of any possible epidemics and water borne diseases. Kerala has the largest population of senior citizens in the country. The elderly are at a higher risk due to lesser mobility and lower immunity levels.
Their mission is to serve the elders and the community at large, by providing them emergency relief like food, hygiene and sanitation kits, as well as preventive and curative healthcare.
HelpAge India is establishing Medical Relief Centres (MRC) to provide essential healthcare to underprivileged elders and communities, with immediate focus of the prevention and treatment of common water borne diseases such as diarrhoea, malaria, skin infections, fungal infection, etc.
The people of Kerala have a long road ahead to recovery and rehabilitation. Many people have only the clothing left on their bodies, nothing else for survival. They have to now rebuild their lives from scratch.
This is the time when our seniors need us the most. Let's not abandon them at this phase of their lives when they need us the most.
