Help rural children get access to nursery education by Amar Seva Sangam

Help rural children get access to nursery education

Thank you!

This program is fully funded because of donors like you.

Impact

Your support could help a child build their dreams.

Balasateesh is a chronically ill child who belongs to a poor family. His father repairs cycles to earn their living expenses. He is not able to earn nearly enough money to look after their needs and most of what he earns goes into his wife’s treatment.

While struggling to put food on the table, Sateesh’s education felt like a luxury that his father could not afford. But Sateesh was his only hope and he wanted to do whatever he could for his son. He wanted Sateesh to study at any cost so that he could lead a better life someday. He approached Amar Seva Sangam hoping with a request to help his son.

The organization found a donor who wanted to support Sateesh’s education. With this support, Satheesh now attends school regularly. He is in UKG and loves going to school. He is a quick learner and a joy to be around!

Satheer’s parents feel proud when they hear him recite his rhymes and lessons. Despite all their suffering, they can now believe that there is a different life that lies ahead for their son. They look forward to watching him progress with his schooling and build a good future for himself.

Every child deserves to dream and you could help make that difference for a poor kid. Give a child like Sateesh a chance to build the future they wish for. You can give with confidence because every program on our platform is GIVEASSURED.

They are empowered to be active learners and participants. All the students benefit from learning in an environment that is committed to acceptance, respect, and understanding. Close to 250 students are served in the school. The continuous success of the various programmes of Amar Seva Sangam has led to tremendous growth in the schools each year.

Handwriting Contest First Prize - A.Mathasan bala Second Prize - S.Maharakshani

Within the given time period, a total of 37 children were impacted by this program. All the beneficiaries who got benefited by this program come from families who are financially weak. They were having trouble buying groceries, vegetables, medical kits etc. They were working for daily wages and it became very hard for them to work on a daily basis. With the support from Give India their parents are very grateful and happy that their children are their education.

Challenges faced and next steps

The Covid pandemic has affected the education system across India, especially in the rural areas of the country. Schools reopened and started live classes in February as the Covid pandemic subsided. Teaching is easy now as live classes are held for all the students. Now it’s easy to meet directly the parents and tell them about the students' studies, their merits, and shortcomings. Personal interaction between students and teacher makes it easier to teach students more efficiently. Even as the Covid pandemic subsides, some parents remain unemployed. Unable to meet their daily expenses. We look forward to providing quality education to all students and identifying financially disadvantaged students to help them continue their studies without dropping out.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Covid and omicron pandemic has changed the way the world is running, and it has been tough to keep up with our regular targets. This pandemic has thrown various challenges, out of which conducting online classes is one. Due to their financial condition, some of our students could not attend online courses because they don’t have smartphones. For those who do not have a smartphone, we give homework through phone calls and collect & correct homework notes once a week. Initially, when the pandemic hit, we had a target to educate all of our students’ parents regarding the pandemic and to be taken safety measures. And we were able to do that within the first month of the pandemic. A few parents have been vaccinated.

In the last week of October 2021, we have conducted storytelling, Handwriting, coloring pictures, and Draw competitions. All the students of our Nursery school have participated and won prizes. Winners are as follows:-

Handwriting contest First Prize – T. Kavinaya, U.K.G Second Prize – K.Dhanyasri, U.K.G

Draw & coloring contest First Prize – S. Maharakshani, L.K.G Second Prize – S. Dhanshik mukilan, L.K.G

With this program for July to December – 2021, we can cover beneficiaries from various areas around our school, namely Ayikudy, Kambili, Kilangadu, Sambavarvadakarai Villages in Tenkasi District, Tamil Nadu. Within the given period, 86 children were impacted by this program. All the beneficiaries who benefited from this program come from financially weak families. This Covid pandemic had made it worse. They were having trouble buying groceries, vegetables, medical kits, etc. They were working for daily wages, and it became tough for them to work daily. Your contribution has helped them provide good education to their children, especially in these Covid times. They render thanks to you from the bottom of their heart.

Challenges faced and next steps

Covid pandemic has affected educational systems all over India, especially in rural parts of the country, where they have limited access to smartphones and the internet due to financial resources. To help children not waste their academic year, we conducted online classes. Initially, it has been tough to teach all the students online because some students cannot focus, some students don’t have smartphones, some students have network issues, etc. Some of the parents have lost their jobs and could not meet daily expenses. We have given counseling to all the parents and conducted a Covid awareness program via online and telephone calls. Initially, it was challenging to understand the pandemic and the importance of wearing a mask, sanitizing their hands frequently, and maintaining social distance. Over the period, with regular awareness, all our children and their parents stay safe. We give homework through phone calls and correct the note once a week for those who do not have a smartphone. Exams are conducted online by providing a hard copy of questionnaires to the parents. If everything goes correctly and Covid comes under control, we are looking forward to opening our Nursery schools by the end of this month. Even online or directly in the classroom, we are dedicated and focusing on providing quality education to all the students and looking forward to identifying students who were having financial backlash and helping them pursue their education without dropping out.

These students are studying in LKG & UKG. Most of their fathers are working as daily wagers and their mothers work as beedi roller. Their financial conditions are very poor. Most of the students are very talented and good in their studies. All of them are very good in identifying different types of pictures, animals, birds, vegetables, flowers, shapes, numbers and colors. Many of the students have participated in several competitions such as Thirukkural Reciting Competition, Running Race, and Frog Race and won prizes. They love to draw, color pictures and are also very good at arranging letter cards. Most of them like watching TV and love listening to music. Due to the pandemic and lockdown, their families have been affected financially very badly making it hard to run their families. Due to this Covid 19 pandemic and no availability of smart phones with our students’ parents, Siva Saraswathi Vidyalaya Nursery School initially organized classes through phone calls. Later everyone arranged a smart phone so that their kids won’t miss any classes and now we are teaching them by online classes.

Areas Covered – In and around Ayikudy village (Around 4 Kms radius)

Covid-19 related updates- Due to this lockdown situation, our community is badly affected. Students families suffered financially due to unemployment. Students are unable to attend school physically. Due to the financial condition and non-availability of smart phones with our Nursery students, we were not able to do online classes. Hence we have decided to teach our students through tele-calling so that they won’t miss their Academic year. Since June, we are successfully running our classes by making Phone calls and our students are also participating. While we are teaching classes by phone calls we also educate parents of our students about the importance of wearing face mask and frequently washing hands. We even educated them the importance of self-hygiene, self-quarantining and how to protect themselves and their children from Covid-19. To which we got a great response.

Subasankari is studying in U.K.G. She belongs to a very poor family. Her father is no more. Just before Subasankari's birth, her father died in a horrible bike accident. It is sad that she has never seen her father's face. Now her mother is the only bread winner of the family. She has taken up tailoring as a profession. The family has a very weak financial status. So Subasankari's education is always of lesser priority for the family.

Inspite of her poverty, Subasankari's mother admitted her in our school. She was admitted in L.K.G. On seeing the situation, we enrolled her in the list of beneficiaries of Give India. She is good at studies and is also very good at drawing. She is very shrewd and very intelligent. We are very happy to have donors to help such wonderful children like her. report image

Amar Seva Sangam is a premier organization in the field of disability management which is founded and run by wheel chair users and is totally involved developing this project as a 'Valley for the Disabled' where we have Amar Seva Sangam as a central resource centre with all facilities under one roof for any disability and about 800 villages with 15000+ disabled population as client base (Service Users) being catered through an innovative community participatory initiative called 'Village Based Rehabilitation Initiatives'. Our centre has developed from scratch to about 30 acres of land now with several projects for disabled where we have about 250 disabled children and youth in-campus and more than 1000 day scholars in our Higher Secondary School, Medical Testing Unit, School for Special Children, Early Intervention Centre, IGNOU & Alagappa Higher Education Centre and various vocational training programs. The Spinal Post Acute Care Centre and Early Intervention program are our pioneering programs which are very few in our country. The demand for our services far exceeds our existing facilities but we are able to manage with fast turnaround of patients and strong village based and Home based follow-ups post discharge.

Siva Saraaswathi Vidyalaya Nursery School, run by Amar Seva Sangam is an inclusive school which educates both the disabled and non-disabled children under an inclusive atmosphere, so that both children get mingled and the normal children understand the disabled children's constraints, also the disabled children feel very closer to everybody. This removes the inferiority complex from the minds of the differently abled child. In addition, the normal children learn to treat every body equal.

Most of our students are belong to very poor family. Any child should not be dropped out of the school for want of money.

Hence, the donations from all well-wishers help the students to continue their studies.

Expected total number of beneficiaries in this program for FY18-19 : 250
Total Budget for the project for FY18-19 : INR 1749000

The last couple of months have been very eventful for children at the school, thanks to the many events and activities that they were a part of. Some of them are listed below:
The students participated in various district level competitions conducted by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu in December, and won prizes in drawing, speech and quiz competitions. They also won prizes in extempore, memory games, singing, quiz and drawing competitions, conducted by the Vivekananda Kendra in Kanyakumari in January. Apart from competitions, the children enjoyed going on an excursion to Thekkadi, Suruli falls, and Vaigai Dam with their friends.

The highlight of the eventful quarter though, was when the differently abled students won the Championship Trophy at the State Level Sports meet in Chennai for the 16th consecutive time! The school also celebrated the Annual day with great pomp and show in February in which students of all classes participated with great enthusiasm.
