Impact

Monthly donations help provide transport to disabled students like Gyanda

Gyanda suffers from Cerebral Palsy. She has very severe spasticity at major joints of limbs. Her bilateral hands don't work. She is fully dependent for her mobility. She stays with her parents and moves using a wheelchair.

She studies in the Kiran village as they provide her with transport. The bus provided by Kiran has a ramp facility and so she can use it with a wheelchair. She studied till class 8 at the integrated school and went on to complete intermediate education through National Institute of Open School (NIOS).

Gyanda has now completed her Masters in Social Work (MSW) through IGNOU and is an active member of the social sector. This growth for Gyanda has been only made possible because of the transport provided.

Program Description

KIRAN aspires to empower differently able children and young adults in partnership with their parents, by providing a quality service to them without discrimination of caste, religion or financial circumstance. In order to the beneficiaries to avail there services, KIRAN provides free transport facility to all children.

Every year, more than 350 physically disabled children and young adults get special education and vocational training. KIRAN is situated outside varanasi where there is no proper public transport facility available. Most of the students come from a 30 km radius. The transport facility fetches them from their homes and drops them back.

Six Buses ply to transport children to school every working day. This facility can sometimes be the difference between illiteracy and education for a challenged child. This becomes the very reason for their self-reliance. Donate to this program so a challenged-child can get access to transportation to school.

About The NGO

Kiran Society
Kiran Society Logo
Kiran Society

Kiran Society was founded in Varanasi by a small group of people from various social, cultural, and religious backgrounds based on the idea of supporting differently-able and disadvantaged children and youngsters and enriching their talents and abilities.Shifting their base to the outer village of Modhpur, the center functions as a small village where the differently abled children receive holistic treatment through education, skills and vocational training and physical and medical rehabilitation.

Their belief in the potential of the children to lead normal lives has enabled them to encourage family involvement in assisting the children and youngsters suffering from the afflictions of polio, cerebral palsy, rickets and/or hearing impairments. Their 190 strong staff members have helped more than 110 disabled children in receiving regular therapy, 280 malnourished children receiving supplementary food and 80 admissions of differently-abled youth in training programs.

Their efforts echoed in the society when the NGO was awarded the Lokmat Samman in Lucknow, UP for educating children with disability. Their vision of empowering differently able children and young people, in partnership with their parents, by providing quality service to them without discrimination of caste, religion or financial circumstance reflects in their hard work.

Story from the field

Amreshwar is a male child with hearing impairment. He belongs to a family with very poor economic background. Amreshwar has three brothers and two sisters. His father is a single parent who works as a mechanic. One brother of Amreshwar is severely sick and needs medical treatment on a regular basis. He is also a student at KIRAN.

Amreshwar joined KIRAN in 2013, when he was five years old. In the beginning, he was a very shy introvert. He had major problems in following classes and focussing on studies. A major change in Amreshwar's life occurred in 2017, when he got a cochlea implant.

He lives in Varanasi, therefore he uses the transport services. With the transport service, he is able to come to school on a regular basis. This is also helpful for his father, since he can go to work peacefully without worrying about Amreshwar would reach school. He has problems with concentrating in class due to which he struggles in academics. However since he comes school on regular basis, it has helped him in making slow but gradual progress. Major positive changes has occurred in Amreshwar. His behaviour has changed over the time, he was very passive and introvert now he participates actively on the playground and in the classes.
