At Mahila Dakshata Samiti, we have a committee to facilitate the award of scholarships, which meets at the beginning of the academic year to discuss and finalise the procedure for selection of awardees and set up other processes. Once the results are announced, we post ads in the local newspapers calling for applications for the scholarship awards. The Committee scrutinizes the applications in detail and calls eligible students along with their parents for an interview. The committee tries to find out about the candidate’s interests, ambitions and future plans. Latest fee receipts and marks, report cards are examined. Depending on the available funds, a base amount is fixed for 10th class, for 1st and 2nd year of PUC, for Degree, for Diploma, Engineering and Medical courses. This amount is enhanced marginally for students – (i) With outstanding academic record, (ii) With a single parent struggling to educate the girl child (iii) For first-generation learners. (iv) The amount is slightly decreased for students studying in Government colleges where the fee is comparatively low. (v) The base-amount increases with the level of the class and is comparatively high for Engineering and Medical Courses. Students in the second and later years are regarded as continuation scholars. We are extremely happy to note that continuation scholars generally show improvement in their academics and also seem to develop considerable self-confidence, as they move on; most likely emerging because of the monetary assistance provided by the Scholarship. Some of the program highlights are that we have not only given financial aid to students pursuing engineering and medical streams, but also financial aid for the students pursuing their Diploma in Engineering course, Nursing , Radiology and Journalism.

Program Update

Our prime focus has been education of the girl child, as education is the key to empowerment.Keeping this in mind we have been providing scholarships to needy meritorious students from economically backward sections of society so as to enable them to pursue their dreams. As usual, this year too advertisements inviting applications for scholarships were put forth in English and kannada newspapers. The response was very good. There has been a steady increase in the number of students, who have recieved financial aid from the MDS, a big jump from 80 students in 2015-16 to 150 students in 2017-18. A point worthy of mention is that there has been a steady increase in the number of students pursuing professional courses applying for grants. The Scholarship committee goes through a lot of pain in selecting the most deserving candidates for the awarding of scholarships. Their scholastic abilities, financial status, family background such as orphans, children of single parent, health problems of parents due to which they are unable to contribute to the family exchequer, illiterate and semi-literate parents, students from rural areas and students who get admitted to Government colleges are some of the criteria taken into consideration while granting scholarships. This year too we have granted scholarships for about 140 students so far.

Story from the field

This is the success story of Ms. Aishwarya, who has completed her MBBS with our financial support and guidance. Her father had abondoned her and her mother, when she was a three months old child. Her mother is the sole earning member. She has single handedly brought Aishwarya up by working as a domestic help. All along she has been simple minded in her vision in providing Aishwarya with quality education, so that she does not have to endure hardships in life like her. Having successfully completed MBBS, today she is employed as an Assistant Doctor to a Sr. Doctor in ESIC Hospital. She and her mother are extreamly grateful to usfar the same.
