Impact
A donor like you gave Satish the power to hear!
Satish is an 11-year-old boy from a poor family in Hyderabad. His father is a farmer and the only earning member of the family. Satish was born with a hearing problem but his family did not have the knowledge or money to get him the help he needed.
He was identified by the NGO Ashray Akruti to receive support. They helped his parents understand the need of hearing aid. They taught them how being able to hear would also improve his speech and language skills and was a necessity for Satish to grow.
Ashray Akruti then provided him with a good hearing aid. They also gave him speech and audio therapy. Soon Satish started to frame small sentences and speak. He now goes to school, learns and enjoys his life like any other child.

About The Program
What the beneficiary gets
Program Description
Ashray Akruti runs a school for hearing impaired students. Hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit in humans today. Approximately 8 % of the total affected population are children. These children for this program are selected by the organization based on their age, the percentage of hearing loss and family's economic status.
The students need hearing aids on a continuous basis. These hearing aids also need replacement every few years. The organization uses the behind the ear model of hearing aid. This model sometimes costs more than Rs.15,000 ($231). Ashray Akruti requires donations to empower the underprivileged hearing Impaired children by supporting them with hearing aids.
Donations made to this program support the cost of the 'Behind the ear' hearing aid given to the beneficiaries. When you donate to this program, hearing-impaired children get access to hearing aids and use their innate capabilities to reach their optimum level of independence.

Story from the field
Angothu Hindu belongs to a poor family that resides in Kondapur area of Hyderabad. Her father works as a daily wage labourer to support the basic needs of the family while mother is a homemaker. She has a younger sister who goes to regular school. She was diagnosed with hearing impairment at the age of two years when she did not respond to sounds. The parents were dejected with the news and had no idea whom to approach for help. They tried giving her medicine to improve her condition but nothing seemed to work for her. They initially enrolled her into a local Anganwadi school in their locality. However, the child would remain quiet and isolated from the rest of the class. She could not get along with the other children at school. Through references, they heard about Ashray Akruti and the services provided by the organization to hearing impaired children. They approached the school and enrolled her at Ashray Akruti in June 2018. She stays at the residential home for girls provided by Ashray Akruti. Current Status: Hindu is studying in Pre-Primary class at Ashray Akruti. She is undergoing training in speech therapy and auditory training to develop her speech and language skills. The special educators here help her to cope with the academics. She is responding well to the training and showing interest to improve in academics as well. She is an active girl with a smiling face. She mingles well with her friends.
