Feed nutritious meals to a poor rural child

Impact

Every monthly donation helps more kids like Bairavi get midday meals

Bairavi's father is a daily wage labourer but due to ill-health can't work regularly. The house they live in has a leaky roof and unhygienic surroundings. Even one meal a day is a distant dream for them. Isha Vidya convinced the parents to admit her to the Isha school after promising scholarship.

Through a medical camp conducted in the school, Bairavi was diagnosed as under-nourished and anemic. After regular intake of the nutritious and tasty mid-day meal with proteins, she started to gain strength. By the second medical camp, her weight was normal and she is no longer anemic.

Unfortunately, a mid-day meal is the only good meal a poor child gets and this program helps a child with the basic right to a hot meal.

Program Description

Isha Vidhya works for the economic and social empowerment of rural children in the villages across Tamil Nadu. The foundation is committed to raising the level of education in rural India. The schools offer a nurturing approach to education. They run 8 schools and cater to more than 3,488 students from nearby villages.

Many of these children come from families where parents are daily wagers, who earn very meager incomes. Due to the absence of any vegetables, fruit or proteins, the nutritional content of their food is very poor. This severely impedes the physical and mental growth of the children. By providing at least one tasty and nutritious meal to these kids, two issues are addressed; the health of the children and incentivizing the parent to send their child to school.

A nutritious meal should be every child's right. Donate to this program to give a child that basic right.

Isha Education

Isha Vidhya rural schools have been started in villages (under the umbrella of Isha Education, established in 2005) to provide high-quality school education to underprivileged rural children who cannot otherwise access or afford it. Isha Vidhya’s English-medium schools open the door for rural children to prepare for higher studies and to join the workforce. The holistic, activity-based approach of Isha Vidhya’s educational system, nurtures children’s development beyond just academics, ensuring that students realize their full potential and learn in a joyful manner.

With 10 schools and over 8500 students, the members of Isha Vidya actively support and promote education among female children in the villages as a result of which their schools have seen an increased enrolment of girl children.

60% of our children are first generation school goers and are on scholarship. The on-going pandemic has severely affected the families of our children. This year with CSR funds nearly non-existent, we are entirely dependent on individual donors to contribute for the scholarships of the students. This campaign is to seek your support for these deserving children.

Green Consciousness: At Isha Vidhya, we aim to create "green consciousness" and build pride in the younger generation for being actors of environmental conservation. Isha Vidhya Coimbatore's Class 4 students participated in various activities in an attempt to create awareness among their friends about the 3R's (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). Activities included - artwork, rhymes, videos on composting and landfill, a demo on composting and craftwork using waste material. Isha Vidhya students and teachers have taken this amazing initiative to grow their own vegetables for their "Mid-Day" meals. The joy of growing your own food is incredible. This kitchen garden focuses on organic farming and grows a variety of vegetables and fruits.

"Sandhai" (Local Market): The concept of "Sandhai" (local market) is a very cultural and popular one in the rural regions of Tamil Nadu. It is a great outlet for small home businesses to sell their products and wares and is a system that was established when trading and barter came to be and is still kept alive even today. Dharmapuri Isha Vidhya, grade 2 students were taken to the local "Sandhai" as part of their lesson in class about the same. Being a very novel and interesting activity, the students got to practice the things they learned in class about how to buy, bargain, etc. Moreover, it was a treat to their senses, filled with colors, aromas, and flavors which was very exciting for these little ones.

School Grown Garden: Isha Vidhya Coimbatore students with the help of their teachers and Gardner have been using natural farming methods to grow vegetables for their mid-day meals. Our students have harvested various vegetables which was grown organically using organic manure called Jeevamrutham. Isha Vidhya students learn to grow a variety of vegetables and these fresh vegetables are used for their mid-day meal. There's nothing like homegrown food.

Tamil Martial Arts: Kalam World Research Foundation conducted an event showcasing over 20 different Ancient Arts of War on Jan 1st, 2020. These Arts of War get the record in Kalam World Record and Nobel World Record Books. Over 150 participants took part in the event and showcased 20 different types of Tamil Martial Arts. Isha Vidhya Dharmapuri's brother-sister duo Suryadeepan and Deepika displayed their talents in Oodhu Kolli (blowgun) event. Suryadeepan is in Class 5 and his sister is in Class 4 whose parents are daily wagers. The event happened for 20 hours, 20 minutes and 20 seconds signifying the New year of 2020.

Mallakhamb Winner at National Level: Isha Vidhya Villupuram's Yuvarani of class 7 bags 3rd place in the 'National Mallakhamb Competition' held at Chhattisgarh in 2020. Mallakhamb is a traditional sport, originating from the Indian subcontinent, in which a gymnast performs aerial yoga postures and wrestling grips in concert with a vertical stationary or hanging wooden pole, cane, or rope.

Noon meal subsidy to underprivileged rural children: Many of our children come from families where both parents are daily wagers, who need to leave for work early. Usually, they cook just once a day, and this is the dinner, a portion of which is kept aside for the children as breakfast and lunch as well. In the absence of any vegetables, fruit or proteins, the nutritional content of their food is very poor. This severely impedes the physical and mental growth of the children. By providing at least one tasty and nutritious meal to this student for a year, two issues are addressed– the health of the children and incentivising the parents to send their children to school. Without the noon meal contribution, the child cannot afford to have a nutritious meal even for one time a day, and we thank the donor for providing noon meal scholarship which enables the kid to continue the studies without any hindrance.

Story from the field

Priyadarshini is from a low-income family. Her father, Chandrasekar is Tailor, and his meager income is not sufficient to take care of his family expenses. He is struggling to manage the educational cost of the child. They approached the school for the noon meal subsidy, and after the house visits cum other formalities from the school, She was provided free noon meal. Now the girl is continuing the education and her parents are quite relieved. Comments by Class Teacher: I am the class teacher for Priyadarshini, and I know her from her 7th std onwards. Her involvement in studies, scientific experiments & extracurricular activities is quite adorable. She loves to do science experiments in the laboratory and also assist her friends in doing the experiments. Bright and cheerful, Priyadarshini is a curious child, inundating her teachers with questions, displaying heartening intelligence and the thirst to learn. She shows a lot of interest in the subjects Maths & Physics. She wants to become a doctor, hence taken the Biology group in XI and keep moving towards her goal. She is a good creative thinker and enthusiastic student, thus, naturally she is very interested in the art and craft classes. Priyadarshini was a throw ball player and part of the school team which won prizes in zonal level sports competition.

Story from the field

Indhuja is pursuing 5th std in the Isha Vidhya School in Coimbatore District. She stays with her parents at a remote village named Karamadai, in Thondamuthur block of Coimbatore. The zeal in Indhuja belies her background of stark economic deprivation. Her father Senthil Kumar, the sole bread-winner for the family, works as daily wage labor in a Gold Covering shop. His daily earning can barely support the family’s needs. He is struggling to manage the educational costs, and thus Noon Meal Subsidy came as a great relief to the family. By providing at least one tasty and nutritious meal to this student for a year, two issues are addressed– the health of the children and incentivizing the parents to send their children to school. Without the noon meal contribution, the child cannot afford to have a nutritious meal even for one time a day. Nothing dampen’s Indhuja’s enthusiasm for sports, nor grounds her lofty dreams. She loves several games, but was deprived of the opportunity to pursue any until she joined Isha Vidhya. Indhuja is a good athlete and loves to play Hockey. Bright and cheerful, Indhuja is a curious child, inundating her teachers with questions, displaying heartening intelligence and the thirst to learn.
