Saraswati found the peaceful life she was looking for.

Saraswati Devi is a 72-year-old woman from Sampatchak, Patna. She is from one of the most backward localities of the area and lived in absolute poverty. She has four sons but they all abandoned her over time. She lives alone and is paralyzed on one side. She cannot work and was not able to earn enough to survive. She felt helpless and did not know how to go on. When Action for Development of Demos noticed her state, they decided to enroll her in their program for senior citizens. They gave her monthly food rations along with milk and an egg every day. They made sure that she was given all the nutrients she needed to become healthy again. They also gave her a few clothes, towels and bed covers to help with her basic necessities. She was also given a medical checkup and the needed medical help under the program.

Program Description

Action for Development of Demos has a unique 'Support for poor old person' program which provides support in terms of rations for senior citizens, below the poverty line, who are alone and nearing the end of their journey. They work with economically downtrodden senior citizens in the rural and semi-urban areas of Bihar.

The senior citizens are provided rice, wheat, oil, vegetables, milk coupons and Horlicks. Local ADD volunteers identify beneficiaries based on their economic status and include them in the program. ADD provides food and also remains in touch with them, through its representatives, who try convincing the other family members about the importance of caring for the elderly. The duration of support is often extended if there is an availability of funds.

When you donate to this program, you can help underprivileged senior citizens with the dignity of regular food.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Total number of beneficiaries impacted was 25 in Patna, Bihar with 48% being females

Challenges faced and next steps

With the onset of the programme, we have focussed on providing 100% in all necessary parameters of the selected beneficiaries including their health, livelihood, BMI etc. For example the average BMI has improved from 21 or 22 to 27 during the period July to December 22. The overall health conditions have also improved a lot. Our volunteers keep visiting the beneficiaries time-to-time. We also keep on motivating the family members of selected old beneficiaries to take care of their old parents.

Stories from the ground

Pankuri Devi, a 72 years lady. She used to pick up garbage on roadside and earn a little livelihood which is obvious that its not enough to survive. However, after we located her with the help of our volunteers, we identified her as an orphan type deaf lady with no one to take care of her. We immediately enrolled her under the programme and started providing her with the ration kit. The monthly consumption of 10kg of flour, 5kg Rice, 2kg Pulse, 5kg Potato, 1L of Refined/Mustard oil, 1kg Packet of Salt, 1kg Soyabean and half kg horlicks, very soon improved her health. Although she still continues her livelihood work as her body and soul has perhaps revived. We wish her a good health.

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

This program is a life-line to the enrolled senior citizens. Getting the seasonal fruits, sugar along with the nutritional Horlicks or Chywanprash, is like a delicious supplement to the meal that these needy people have been getting. As being carried from last 10 years, this programme is now un-stoppable support to the old needy people. ADD has given a ray of hope to the needy old beneficiaries of Manoharpur Kachhuara village of Sampatchak block of Patna. Every month around 70 to 80 old people are donated with 1 kg of seasonal fruits, 1 kg of sugar and one 1/2 kg pouch of Horlicks (in summer)or 1 kg Chywanprash (winter). Every month the enrolled beneficiaries are gathered at the pre-announced venue (PANCHAYAT BHAWAN of the village), where they are firstly counseled individually regarding their health and other family issues. If required our volunteers also pay individual attention to the concerning beneficiaries in their daily lives. The verification of the correct identity of the enrolled beneficiary is done on the basis of the identity card provided by the organization during the time of enrollment. On same day of the distribution even every month, we also guide and pitch them regarding the importance of personal hygiene and cleanliness, which is very necessary to them during their old days. In a nutshell, this programme has now become the daily necessity to the concerning beneficiaries. Remarkably we also have given a good required lesson to many of the people who neglect and disrespect their old parent at the old age.

Challenges faced and next steps

During the programme we faced many challenges. Few of them are ? a. Identifying the correct genuine beneficiary as per the financial status, to be enrolled under the programme. b. Sorting the enrolled beneficiary in the mob every month on the day of distribution. c. Making the benefits available to the helpless unhealthy beneficiary who are not able to reach the distribution venue every month. d. Enrolling the mass which is required, but the budget issue arises. e. CORONA FEAR during the COVID spread. f. Social and personal hygiene. To overcome the above challenges, we did our best so that the programme may continue in smooth mode. Few of the precaution to overcome the challenges are ? a. To identify the correct genuine beneficiary as per the financial status, to be enrolled under the programme our volunteers individually visit the doors of each of the old beneficiary who are willing to get enrolled, just to have their exact financial and family status. The final decision is taken by the core team members as per the visit report and personal interaction with the beneficiaries. b. To sort out the enrolled beneficiary in the mob every month on the day of distribution, we provide an organization?s beneficiary identity card to each of the enrolled one, which is mandatory to be brought by the enrolled beneficiaries on the distribution day. c. To make the benefits available to the helpless unhealthy beneficiary who are not able to reach the distribution venue every month, we personally keep a track of all those helpless beneficiaries and our volunteers are allotted to make all the stuffs available to the concerning beneficiary at their doorstep. d. Every month hundreds of new beneficiaries visit us to get their name enrolled under the programme, however as per the budget and as per the programme eligibly criteria every month, add new name is the list of enrolled beneficiaries. e. During the entire covid era and during the lockdown period, we kept on spreading the happiness and support to the beneficiaries, but with extra precaution and safety. At that time during the COVID period, the use of mask and sanitizers was mandatory condition to take the benefit. Apart of this our volunteers were specially instructed to keep a social distance during the distribution event. Local police authority was also informed every month during the lock-down to be on alert mode if required to control the mob. However everything went on smoothly and with safety during the worst phase of this millennium, the COVID ERA. f. On same day of the distribution even every month, we also guide and pitch them regarding the importance of personal hygiene and cleanliness, which is very necessary to them during their old days. During the coming 6 months that is yet to arrive, we are in the same strategic mode to add more names. Keep record of everyone, making the best deliverables items to the beneficiaries.

Stories from the ground

Sumantri Devi, W/O Late Ram Chandra Manjhi, Age 74 Years, Manoharpur Kachhuara, Sampatchak, Patna Sumantri Devi lives her oldlife lonely in this world. She is a dalit lady so nobody takes any care of her. Although blessed with two children, none of her sons take any care of her. With the regular intake of the seasonal fruits, sugar along with the nutritional Horlicks or Chawanprash, the old lady?s health has been constantly improving. The immunity and her stamina which became consistent in her due to the Chawanprash consumption helped her a lot in staying untouched from the deadly Corona spread. The seasonal fruits fulfilled her nutritional requirement as required at the old age. This programme is now like a boon to her. She has now may reason to live more and to live a happy healthy life. She is very thankful to ADD and to the kind donors, whose noble donation has been helping her to live a healthy happy life at her old days, where her own children have been ignoring her. Our volunteers also time-to-time keep on influencing the old lady?s sons to think about their needy old mother and take care of the Sumantri. May god bless the poor lady !

Activities and work undertaken in the last 5-6 months

Under the concerned programme, we have been distributing dry rations and nutritional materials to helpless, needy senior citizens for the last 3 years. Once a month we observe a grand event where we proudly distribute the ration and nutritional items to helpless, needy old people, just as a big noble charity. Hundreds of elderly people get benefits under this programme every month. So every month we throw a major event, which is the grand distribution ceremony. Even as a part of this programme, since last year we have been creating awareness among the masses regarding COVID and its preventive measures. We have been continuously mobilizing people to go for the vaccination as requested by the government itself. It is somehow a great exception that even uneducated and unaware people are at least using masks and sanitizers for the sake of humanity. Although our volunteers have been directly involved in all these activities to stop the spread of COVID, our team members are also monitoring the programme along with the COVID preventive measures. This program has been like a lifeline to hundreds of needy old people because the dry ration, the grain, and all the food stuffs have now become a part of their daily diet. We heartily thank our kind donors for helping us in implanting such noble programmes. This programme has been functioning, covering the areas of Sampatchak Block in the Patna district in Bihar. As a milestone, or in other words, we have achieved a big figure in counts, as YTD we have distributed about 650 units to the needy people. The figure crosses 2000 if we take this from the date of the programme launch.

Challenges faced and next steps

In implementing the program, in the current scenario, the COVID pandemic has been the biggest challenge before us, so managing the crowd has been a tough task, but we did it sincerely with the help of our active volunteers and pre-planning. The spread of the pandemic had been at its peak, so gathering the masses and distributing the dry ration, maintaining the social distance, along with all other required measures, was very necessary. We could not stop the distribution in hope of a better situation, because we have been directly involved in making the lifeline supplies available to the needy elderly people. We distributed masks and sanitizers, maintained the social distance, and involved manpower as our volunteers to control the rush, all to stop the spread of the pandemic. Under this banner, we have the stern goal of not letting a singly stomach empty for a night. Since the elderly have been the biggest victims of poverty, we primarily focus on the elderly.

Stories from the ground

Khaira Tali village, District Patna

The old man had been living with his daughter, but due to the low income of his son-in-law, the old man was not taken good care of. Anyhow, the old manager has been living on an empty stomach for more than a day. Fortunately, one of our volunteers spotted him in a pathetic condition. We immediately registered him under this program and started providing him with one month's ration and nutritional materials every month. Now the old man happily enjoys his bread of his own, along with all the other included stuff like pulses and soyabeans. At least he now does not sleep on an empty stomach. The old man’s health has also been improving by virtue of the regular meals. He is very thankful to ADD and to the kind donors for helping needy old men like him. May God bless the poor old man.

Under this banner till now we have been able to provide the ration to about 100 poor senior citizens and counting. We have a name and fame in the field of upgrading the lives of poor needy senior citizens all for sake of humanity. For this, we are highly grateful to the kind donors.Under the same, we also have organized a medical camp for basic medical check-ups of the unhealthy old citizens. Apart from this, we also get them assisted with the help of our sincere volunteers for the further required treatment and medication from the local health centres. We have been running this in different backward localities of Patna (Bihar) like in Sampatchak and Phulwarisharif Block, where there are dozens of villages that are still deprived of the basic government welfare programmes and schemes. All the selected beneficiaries are well examined and counselled for getting their exact financial and social status and later the finalized beneficiaries are provided a monthly ration that includes enough foodstuffs like wheat flour, rice, spices, soybean, pulses etc on a monthly basisAt least such support encourage them to do something to improve their lives.

Challenges faced and next steps

During the implementation of this programme, we really did face a lot of hurdles and problems. The most concerning was the current pandemic of Covid-19. Controlling the spread of Corona infection among our senior citizen beneficiaries was a tough job that had to be overtaken at any cost.Keeping this in mind, we adopted a lot of preventive measures to stop the spread of Covid.Like during the gathering of the beneficiaries every month, social distancing was strictly followed. No beneficiaries were allowed to without the mask and sanitisers. We also had our own stock and arrangement of the masks and sanitisers to provide to the needful old people.Apart from this we also conducted a session among them for a briefing over the impact and preventive measures for stopping the spread of pandemic among our beneficiaries.

Stories from the ground

Impact story from the ground: Story of Lakhan Paswanage-85 yrsLocation- Domnachak, Sampatchak Block, District Patna (Bihar). The poor old man has no sons. Nobody is there to take care of this old retiring man. Anyhow he and his wife have been living with his daughter. His daughter herself is not in a position to take proper care of her old parents. Even expecting two bread a day is not affordable stuff for the old man. In such a situation, when ADD came to know about him, we almost have adopted him under ADD's kind banner. Here the poor old man every month gets the monthly ration that includes the grocery along with the nutritional support. This really is a great support to him. It satisfies his appetite. Now the old man's health is also getting reformed day-by-day with the regular intake of Horlicks. Thanks to the kind donors for the noble donation. The old man now has also started doing small stuff on his own like bringing the household items, sweeping the house etc. It is unusual for him because previously he used to sit ideal at a place whole day because of his bad health but now with the support from ADD his life has changed a lot.

REVITALIZING OLD LIVES

#4

How do you feel when you have a delightful breakfast in the morning and on the way to your work you find an old man begging just to have one bread ?
Now, changing the scenario.
How do you feel when you find someone gathering some food from the house-hold garbages of muncipality?
In both the scenes, hunger is the vital issue. We have enough to sustain and to feed our stomach, but what about those who don’t even have a single penny to feed themselves. The situation becomes worse when the body retires and is unable to do something for earning livelihood.
Our volunteers when reported about the poor pathetic condition of the rural senior citizen people in slums of rural areas of Patna, immediately got determined to do something for their proper rehabilitation. We initiated by starting this programme specialy dedicated for feeding the poor old people. Every year we add hundreds of poor old from the rural slum areas and we thereafter we start providing them with the rations that includes 3.5 kg rice, 7.5 kg wheat, 1kg pulse, 1/2 kg salt, 1 kg mustard oil, vegetable & Nutritional Aid 250 gm of milk each day and 1 kg Chawanprass. The whole material is monitored and checked for nutritional prospect. In summer we provide Horlicks in place of Chawanprass.
We were left overwhelmed with the post effects of this live saving programme. Each of the supported beneficiary i.e.the senior citizens, are in a well health condition. They consider this Programme as their god father. We truly admire the kind donors for their generous and noble support.

Hunger is something no one should strugle with

Very profoundly we have been working over many years. The satisfaction and assurance that the the senior citizen express with us is the most remarkable and relaxing compliments that we receive. The nutritional milk and horlicks supply to the senior citizens has helped them in enhancing their declining health. Hundreds of new, old & needy beneficiaries including the existing ones are regularly being donated the the monthly ration (3.5 kg rice, 6 kg wheat, 1 kg pulse, 1/2 kg salt, 1 kg mustard oil & vegetable) along with the milk and horlicks.
Although, the monthly rations does a great deal to the needy people but we are well aware that a lot more is still to be implemented for the all round welfare of the selected beneficiaries, and we do are working on that.

Program Update

Under the aforesaid Programmes, we spot out Poor Senior Citizens and provide them with Monthly rations with Nutritional Support. The ration includes 3.5 kg of rice, 5 kg of wheat, 1 kg of pulse, 1/2 kg salt, 1 kg of mustard oil, 1 kg of Soyabean along with one-month Vegetable Supply. The nutritional support includes 1/2 kg Horlicks every month & Nutritional Aid of 250 gm of milk each
day. Till March, 2019 we had been benefitting about 30 beneficiaries each month with all the preset provisions of the programme and still we do are continuing with the same beneficiaries. However we are in plan to add about 150 more beneficiaries in the list by next quarter.

Story from the field

Our Hero of the Programme, we spotted out is the Poor Senior Citizens Bachu Saw who once was seen wandering in garbages and begging here and there for food. Thanks to our volunteer, who sincerely presented him to our organisation. Very soon without any delay, we inspected his every detail including his family background. We positively enrolled him under our Nutritional Programme and since then we have been providing him with the Monthly Food Ration along with the nutritional Support every month. Though he has 4 sons but none of his sons take any care of him. Even on this matter, we personally intereferd and convinced his sons to take care of the poor old Bachu. Hopingly one of his son has changed his mind and now he keeps the old man with himself and take a good care of him. Bachu Saw always expresses his deepest quote of thanks to ADD and to his kind donors for uplifting the lives of helpless old man like him.
Really, helping such poor starving people make the correct judicial use of the donation, that the kind people pay for such causes. However there are countless helpless old men like Bacchu who can be found in the poor backwards areas of our society. We firmly need to do a lot to them to improve their worries lives.
