Program Description

Kidpower supports the poor girl and disabled children who may drop out of school due to the inability to pay fees. Through a network of schools across Visakhapatnam, Kidpower identifies about 10 to 20 such children who may need their help.

Once the programme receives funding, the team at Kidpower visits the homes of such kids to assess the extremity of the situation. Hereafter, they hand over the fees of the student along with basic necessities like school bags, books, etc directly to authorities at school. Kidpower has also involved tailors who visit these schools and makes uniforms for the students.

Kidpower makes regular visits to these schools and the homes of the kids to ensure they do not drop out of school.

Story from the field

Kalivarapu Devi Apoorva is a girl studying in class 2 in BVK School, Assam Gardens, Visakhapatnam. She studies well and gets good marks. She likes playing with her friends. Her hobby is watching cartoons on television and painting. Apoorva had some problem in her kidneys and had put on lot of weight during last year. After taking some medicines, she was normal again. However she has to take medicines regularly. Out of her father’s income, a big part is to spent towards her medicines, and this is making her father feel very difficult to afford school fees. Her father is an electrician and does small household works. His income is low and is unable to support the medical and education costs of Apoorva. Apoorva’s mother, Bhavani, is not able-enough to go out to work and earn money. She has to look after Apoorva and her baby sister, Lahari, who is 18 months old. They live in a small house for which they pay a rent of Rs 1800/ month. They were thinking of stopping her education or send her to government school. Kidpower India, with support through GiveIndia, paid Apoorva school fees and she is able to continue her education with less burden on her father. He is now able to support the children health costs. Kidpower India social worker makes regular visits to motivate and ensure the child continues her education.
