Adopt a grandparent by providing them monthly groceries

Impact

Every monthly donation helps in feeding elderly citizens like Savitaben

Savitaben from Ambher, Gujrat is 78 years old. She lost her husband a few years ago and does not have any family to take care of her. Due to dire poverty, even at this age, she works as a domestic help to earn her living. With age not on her side, she could not work long hours.

This impacted her earning and she had to go hungry many times. Gram Vikas Trust (GVT) came to her aid and started to provide her with grocery rations monthly to secure her basic needs.

Savitaben is no longer helpless and feels taken care of. While she still works as a domestic help, she is not at the mercy of her job just for two meals a day.

Program Update

Gram Vikas trust provides monthly groceries to all the adopted grandparents, the fantastic number reached last month was for 60 old age with all the basic groceries which provide them with nutritional benefits. Thus to identify the same the field staff visits the house, meets the beneficiary, identify the need for the intervention, interacts with the neighboring community and later provides the benefit to them. It is also being practiced in GVT that with the food items a regular counseling is also provided so that the geriatric feel honored. As a future plan, GVT strives to intervene more and more old age niradhar groups as a helping hand.

Story from the field

At the age of 68, Chauhan Ambubhai Sankarbhai lives with his old wife in dhobi Faliya of Amber village. He was blessed with three daughters and having no son was always his concern for retirement. As young and energetic he was a farmer and his wife was a helping hand to him in his occupation. His farming and other labor work did not pay him well to make a huge house for his family thus he kept on repairing his old house whenever there was a need or whenever there was his daughter's wedding. With all his sweat and blood he somehow made his daughters marry with all wishes of the grooms family fulfilled. From a phone, to a bike to a gold chain. All the sons-in-laws were never disappointed. Thus they were left with nothing at the end. It was observed that the nutrition intake of the family was so low that they could not even manage two time rice or roti for them. Sometimes they sleep without one time meal. Sometimes neighbours also provide meal again if they do some domestic work in their neighbour's house. This is where GVT intervened and provides basic food grains and other necessities to them so that he and his old wife can have daily food without much difficulties. Now the family is healthy and happy!
