| Hello from GiveIndia! Today, we'd like to share with you the story of Meda Guramma - a 65 year old woman from a traditional marine fishing community in Thammayyapalem village in Andhra Pradesh. Meda Guramma was a seasonal labourer in a mango groove and earned a rather meagre income. Her husband, Yellaiah was a fisherman but without a boat! He would go fishing with 7 others and share the catch equally. This was the only source of income for their four children - three daughters and a son. With time, her daughters got married and her son, Gurayya, joined his father as a fisherman, bringing back his own share of the fish caught. But things suddenly took a turn for the worse in 2002 when Yellaiah passed away due to chronic tuberculosis. With the family income halving overnight, it became tough to make ends meet. Then her son too decided to get married and migrated to Vishakhapatnam, leaving his mother, Guramma, behind, all alone. Soon age caught up with Guramma, and a spine related injury prevented her from working in the mango grooves. Abandoned, alone and now without an income too, she didn't know where to go or what to do. While remembering these times, she says that there was no one to turn to, except God. Fortunately, she came in contact with the Association for Rural Development and Action Research (ARDAR), an NGO working in rural Andhra Pradesh. ARDAR, thanks to a donor’s support, was able to take her to a doctor who has already begun treating her spinal injury. During the initial tests, it was also revealed that Gurumma had a lung infection. So till the time Gurumma is back on her own feet and able to earn an income once again, ARDAR, through a donor's support is taking care of her daily needs. While Guramma will soon be independent once again, there are many more Gurammas out there hoping for a more secure life. You too can help give an elderly person some security.
