GiveIndia - Light Up a Life this DiwaliUntitled Document

Hello!

With Diwali round the corner, we thought it apt to share with you the story of Sunita Jat.

A victim of child marriage, Sunita was married off at an early age. At just 16, her days became filled with chores, such as cooking, cleaning, collecting water etc. for a 7 member family - her husband, his parents and his 4 siblings - 2 sisters and brothers.

Her husband Mohan worked as as stone-cutting labourer. While their family did own some land, the year's poor rainfall did not yield them much from it; forcing them to spend most of Mohan's income for providing food for all. With this meagre income and the family's belief of women eating last, it was pretty often that Sunita did not get a hearty meal.

In January, when she got pregnant, life became no different. Daily chores and an insufficient diet infact made things tougher. For families that live a hand to mouth existence, health and hygience are a luxury. Even pregnant women are not given the care and diet that they need. And it was no different for Sunita, who experienced bouts of weakness often.

It was during this time that one of the local villagers noticed the need for Sunita to get some medical attention and recommended her name to Gram Chetna Kendra's (GCK) local chapter. The workers at GCK councelled her and her family on health and hygience and especially the importance of eating healthy when pregnant. Further support in the form of regular checkups, iron tablets and tonics, green vegetables, milk, healthy food supplements and other facilities were also given to Sunita through her pregnancy.

It was all thanks to this support, made possible by a donor, that Sunita gave birth to a healthy baby girl on September 13th, 2010. While care and checkups for both this mother and her baby continue, there are many Sunita's out there hoping that their babies are born safe and healthy. This Diwali, your donation can literally help to light up a life. It takes just Rs. 3,700 to help a poor mother have a safe delivery and a healthy baby. Wishing you a very Happy Diwali :-)!
