Integrating with the Global Philanthropy Marketplace

GuideStar India is a private, not-for-profit initiative administered by GiveIndia (www.GiveIndia.org) and the Credibility Alliance (www.credall.org.in). This initiative has been set up to create a Civil Society Information System (CSIS) for India on an electronic information platform, modelled after the GuideStar systems in the US and UK. The system will (1) capture extensive information about the work of hundreds of thousands of India's Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and (2) present this information in easily understood reports for each CSO in a highly searchable form at a free public website.

WHAT OUR COLLEAGUES SAY ABOUT US
"I have been impressed from my first exposure to GiveIndia. GiveIndia brings to philanthropy a creative, highly professional approach, a strong sensitivity to the individual needs of and challenges faced by charities, a belief in personal responsibility and its own exemplary institutional values and commitment to its work. I am convinced that GiveIndia will provide a forceful engine to enliven and strengthen India's civil society for many years to come."

Buzz Schmidt
Founder, GuideStar and President, Civil Society Systems (http://www.civilsocietysystems.org/)

In October 2004, GiveIndia had an opportunity to share its model and learning's with other global players in the philanthropy marketplace. GiveIndia was invited by Keystone to South Africa to co-create a reporting framework for nonprofits. The interactions that followed with GuideStar, GlobalGiving, GEXSI, PCNC and Shuttleworth Foundation has led to some interesting partnerships.

Philanthropy Marketplace Actors

GiveIndia believes that a vibrant philanthropy marketplace needs a comprehensive non-profit database, a market regulator, rating agencies, charity mutual funds, social venture capital and charity portfolio managers. GiveIndia is currently playing multiple roles, but seeks to eventually focus on running charity exchanges, offering charity portfolio management services and to see the development of its certification services into a full-fledged rating service.

The marketplace also needs to be globally connected to channel resources across boundaries. GiveIndia is working closely with CSS to ensure that our systems are capable of connecting with each other so as to allow donors seamless access across boundaries.
