The Banyan is a NGO working for the homeless mentally ill women found on the streets of Chennai. These women are provided medical attention, food and shelter as well as a caring environment to restore their health. The Banyan also provides psycho-social support to facilitate the womens return to their families and communities. Once the person is back home, due to very minimal or no access to care and treatment, regular reviews do not take place and this would cause the person to relapse and come back to the state of homelessness again. As many of these residents are from remote villages in the country, the cost the families incur to avail treatment is very high which includes cost of travel, time, loss of wages and cost of medicines. For this reason The Banyan continues to provide medicines to all those who have been rehabilitated back into their families
