SAATH (Initiatives for Equity in Development) has facilitated participatory processes that improve the quality of life for the urban and rural poor since 1989. Its single-stop, integrated services reach over 100,000 slum dwellers and youth in Ahmedabad, and many more in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

How It Works

• Saath in collaboration with Bosch India Foundation and Shivia Microfinance, UK have started a 2-month training programme for the youth in 4 trades, i.e. Electrician, Carpentry, Masonry and Plumbing.
• To ensure that they truly benefit from the training, by being able to start work right after training, we provide the required tool kit.
• Therefore the youth who receive training can find work as service providers in their chosen trade immediately.
• Under this Nirman program, both theoretical and practical training are given to the students.

Better support his family
Ganpatbhai of Behrampura lives with his wife and four children and is the sole bread earner of the family. He has been working as a helper under a skilled mason and earned Rs. 200 for a day’s hard labour which was not enough for his family.
He learnt of the Nirman from the SAATH Road Mobilization Team. He immediately registered himself for the masonry batch. After registration he started coming regularly to the centre. After that he also received the tool kit from our programme at the end of the training.
He explains: When I attended my first class I enjoyed it a lot, there was a free flow of knowledge between the trainer and us. I garnered skills on measuring, plastering, importance of saving, safety measurements and estimates. I would certainly recommend Nirman to the other members of my community His earnings have been enhanced by Rs. 100 per day; he now earns Rs. 300 for a day of labour and is now able to better support his family.
