Reimburse the repairing costs of an old check dam and help provide water to a village-Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal
Reimburse the repairing costs of an old check dam and help provide water to a village, INR 14000

Over the past 2 decades, Sanskriti Samvardhan Mandal is running a project in Soil and Water Conservation called 'Watershed Development Program. Watershed development refers to the conservation, regeneration and the judicious use of all the resources - natural (land, water, plants and animals) and human - within a particular watershed. Watershed management tries to bring about the best possible balance in the environment between natural resources on the one side, and human and other living beings on the other. The NGO has taken the responsibility to support and reconstruct the check dams.
How It Works

• Farmers who own land beside the dams are the beneficiaries.
• A team of volunteers from the NGO initially conducts surveys on old check dams in the villages and find out how many beneficiaries can be covered under a repaired check dam.
• Generally, 10 farmers get benefit through a single a check dam.
• The water from the check dam is supplied for irrigation in the agricultural land. This helps farmers to cultivate better yields and also helps replenish the water in their wells.
• The Government has constructed numerous check dams in rural areas long ago. However, those dams are now non-operational due to lack of maintenance.
• The Government has no provision to renovate and restore the dams.
• Restoring a dam can benefit at least 10 farmers and help to improve their livelihood.
• The beneficiaries get the benefit of the structure after rainy season when their crops need water, which is typically 3 months after the repairs are complete.

The Statistics

• The NGO works in 16 villages of 2 blocks in Nanded district.

Improving Lives and Livelihoods
A few years back, the government has constructed check dams in the villages for water management. But there was no provision to oversee maintenance of the check dams and even the farmers/villagers neglected taking care of it. Eventually the dams became non-operational. The water ways were so blocked that looked like there never had been a check dam there in the first place.
SSM took initiative and conducted a survey to explore the issues and current situation in the villages. SSM explained the solution and benefit of renovating and de-silting the check dams to the villagers. Our intervention appealed to the villagers and they agreed to help in completion of the work. SSM renovated the dam, made waterways clear by digging and de-silting.
This resulted in an upswing in livelihoods of the farmers. The villagers were benefitted with increase in agricultural productivity, water level, and fodder for animals and milk production. The change solved the problem of sustainable income generation of the villagers.
