Success Story

In 1990, the tribals preferred to wait for death on their verandas when they fell ill. In 1990 the tribals preferred to ?wait for death? on their verandas when they fell ill. There was no concept of seeking health care. Many preventable deaths occurred.

ASHWINI set up The Gudalur Adivasi Hospital for the tribals of the Gudalur valley. It was staffed by tribals trained on the job and owned by the community. With the support of village health workers, people were encouraged to seek healthcare at ?their? hospital. The office was converted into a hospital

Once people had confidence in the hospital, they came forward for healthcare. Today more than 60 % of women deliver in the hospital and maternal deaths are a thing of the past. A new hospital building is a pressing need and work on this has started.
