Help poor women become financially independent by supporting their self help group, INR 3000
 Mail

Apnalaya runs a number of Self Help Groups for women in the slum areas of Shivaji Nagar, Govandi in the M/E ward of Mumbai Municipal Corporation. The main objective is to enable slum-dwelling women to attain social empowerment by achieving economic independence. The groups also seek support from Government agencies such as Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rojgar Yojana and Mahila Arthik Vikas Mahamandal, which promote income-generating activities through subsidies and soft loans.

These women attend training sessions that focus on:
a) Building awareness about Self Help Groups (SHG’s).
b) Training women to form and run SHGs independently.
c) Linking SHGs to relevant government and other schemes.

How It Works

• Apnalaya volunteers help the women with organizing the paperwork for setting up bank accounts for the SHG members and attending meetings.
• Additionally, they organize a number of training sessions all through the year, for lessons in entrepreneurship and maintenance of financial records.
• Apnalaya also organizes visits to various other organizations for the women to gain exposure and broaden their horizons.

The Basics

• The SHG’s are run completely via benefactors, who donate to Apnalaya's general causes. There is no dedicated aid to the program.
• The donations being sought, is to sustain the running of the SHG groups, to provide services to enable socio-economic empowerment of slum-dwelling women.

Economic Empowerment via SHG
Mahadevi stays with her husband; two daughters & son at her parents home in Bainganwadi. Her husband is a poorly paid construction worker and was the only breadwinner in the family. Economic hardships compelled Mahadevi to take frequent loans from moneylenders paying high interest to make ends meet.
Apnalaya encouraged Mahadevi to join the Renuka Self Help Group (SHG). As a member, she learned how to save money and was trained in record maintaining. But taking that first step to setting up her own business was a big roadblock. The Apnalaya staff, via regular meetings and entrepreneurial workshops, opened up the possibilities that were available. She then successfully completed an ornament & paper bags making training, which was organized by Apnalaya for selected and interested SHG members. With a keen interest in paper bag making she soon started taking orders from companies. She now earns well from this business and is supporting her family.
This has boosted her self-confidence and decision making ability and she no longer depends on high interest loans that are rampant in the locality to meet her family's needs. I liked attending the trainings conducted by Apnalaya as I got excellent ideas & skills due to which I could begin this small business. I can pay my children's school fees, repair my house, and take care of family health very easily now. I feel more independent and confident. I started getting respect from my family including my husband. I feel very happy now, says Mahadevi.
