Success Story

NULL Kavita Kharat comes from a poor family in Vidarbha. Terrified at the prospect of being made to work in her father?s country liquor shop at Shergaon, she ran away to Mumbai. She was found at Chowpatty Beach in 1997 when she was just 9 years old. Having no clue about her address, neither a destination in Mumbai,she was taken in at the Night Shelter at Salaam Baalak Trust.

She was enrolled in a municipal school, and after showing tremendous progress was transferred to a private Marathi Medium school in Mumbai. To nurture her innate talent she has been given formal and informal training in Art and Craft (oil painting, paper mache, ceramic painting, mask-making) apart from special tutorials in academics to help her finish school.

Kavita was selected to participate in a canvas painting project along with M.F. Hussain and other well known artists. She is now being trained in several design-oriented computer packages. She hopes to pass her Std. 10 SSC exams in 2007. She has been selected as one of the candidates for a mentorship program with volunteers from a leading advertising agency.
