The Akanksha Foundation works to impact the lives of children from low-income communities, enabling them to maximize their potential and transform their lives. The organization addresses non-formal education through the Akanksha centre and formal education by initiating school reform through The School Project. Kids enrolled in school are from 3.5 years onwards (in 4 schools in Mumbai where they have kindergarten). They have adopted 13 English-medium municipal schools - 9 in Mumbai and 4 in Pune.

In 1989, Akanksha began with a simple idea: to give less privileged children a place where they could come and enjoy their childhood. Currently, Akanksha reaches out to over 4,000 children through these two models. With the formal school dropout rate of Akanksha enrolled slum children being under 5%, with 75% of their alumni going to college, the organization is clearly making an impact.

Vedika Kamble
Vedika came to school as a very shy, quiet child. She never uttered a word in class and would only communicate through gestures. Her family was very concerned since they thought she might have speech issues.
Akanksha staff spoke to her parents to find out what her situation was at home. The staff pushed Vedika to speak and participate in class and also in group activities. With personal attention and longer school time Vedika eventually came out of her shell and built her confidence and self esteem.
Vedika is now one of the brightest students in Junior KG. She scored really well in her assessments. She speaks up in class, answers questions and shows an active involvement in class activities and participates willingly. She not only interacts with teachers and peers from her class but also initiates conversations with peers and teachers from other classes.
