The Population of senior citizens is increasing as life expectancy is increasing. The composition of the family in urban areas is becoming nuclear and smaller, as a result of which there are fewer people available in the house to provide care and comfort to the ageing. Due to the increase in number of elderly population their needs and problems are increasing too. There are many senior citizens who are without any financial support and are living below the poverty line. There are senior citizens with small pensions but most of it goes for medical treatment and what is left for nutritional support is hardly anything. With medication, proper food is required which is not affordable and hence they ignore the food intake. For such needy senior citizens Dignity Foundation has started Ration Service. Senior Citizens call on Dignity Helpline or come and meet in person for ration support. On receiving the application from needy elders, Dignity Foundation sends a volunteer for home visit for evaluation purpose. This is to verify their residence and their economic status. After that the ration gets sanctioned and the senior citizens gets ration every month.

Mrs. Maya (age 79) lives with her husband (age 82). They had a son, married. Suddenly the son died of a heart attack. Only 3 of them were left. The daughter-in-law was too young so they got her re married in a good family after getting consent from her and her family. They were left with no one to help them support. Maya started going for cooking at some places as husband was not keeping well and the only earning person –their son was no more. She was earning around 2 to 3 thousand due to old age unable to do more work. She was finding it extremely difficult to manage even two meals a day for both of them.
Maya approached Dignity Foundation through a friend and requested for monthly ration. A Dignity Volunteer did a home visit to evaluate whether they really need it. It was confirmed after the home visit that they were really a needy couple and so monthly ration was started.
Maya has a great relief now as she has a helping hand in the form of monthly ration from Dignity Foundation. Now she carries on with her cooking job without worry for her own next meal. Earlier the worry of not being able to provide for food in case of any illness or loss of job was plaguing her. Now that fear has gone with the monthly ration provision from Dignity Foundation.
