The Basic Research Education And Development (BREAD) Society aims to inculcate reading habits early on amongst children by establishing libraries in government high schools.

The Basics

• BREAD establishes libraries in govt. and aided high schools throughout Andhra Pradesh.
• The library is established in a school only after ensuring that every section of every class is allocated a period for the library.
• A teacher in charge is nominated to further train and supervise select students to take charge of the books by issuing them to and receiving them from their classmates.
• BREAD Society honours head masters and teachers responsible for National Means and Merits Scholarship (NMMS) awards. This incentivises them and results in their continuing to mentor the students and monitoring the library work.
• BREAD’s district coordinators visit schools with their libraries on a regular basis to take notes and provide feedback on the scheme to the society.

The Statistics

• 925 – the number of libraries established in govt. and aided schools until the year June 2017
• 6+ - the number of NMMS awards secured.
• 15 – the number of students awarded prizes for write-ups on library books every year.

BREAD Library
Students in govt. schools do not have access to any books other than text books. They do not have the purchasing power to buy books because of their poverty. Their exposure to outside world is negligible as most of the schools are located in rural areas.
Exposure to Library books opens a whole wide world to school children about which they were not even aware of. The books provided are of contemporary interest with illustrations and attractive graphic designs generating curiosity among students leading them to read them. Books are from National Book Trust, Children’s Book Trust, Pratham Books and other established publishers.
Reading levels of school students have improved. Their comprehension, writing and communication skills have also improved. Books have inspired and developed self-confidence in many students.
