Overview

DEAN Foundation caters to that vulnerable, marginalised section of society that cannot speak or defend for itself - mainly the destitute, the homeless and afflicted women and children, those living below the poverty line. They care for those suffering from terminal, irreversible, advanced, incurable diseases like Cancer - both malignant and non-malignant, AIDS, etc. in the city and surrounding districts of Chennai with no access to palliative care.

The Basics

One of the goals of the institution is to be sensitive and responsive to the special requirements of each individual and family to access the highest quality care available through hospice.

How It Works

• The patients are looked after by a team of trained professionals.
• Patients with advanced diseases come to our Outpatient Centres for treatment. Besides this, the Home Care Team visits patients who are bed ridden or home bound till they die or move out of physical proximity
• This donation option will help the NGO to purchase medicines and consumables for treating cancer patients.

Helping with care
Mr. J H is a 36 yrs old male. He is a supplier of laborers to contractors. His wife does not work. He has 3 daughters. In February 2012, he had pain in the abdomen with constipation. He consulted a general physician with no relief. He went to a private hospital underwent all the investigations, and the reports revealed the diagnosis as “Carcinoma in colon” He underwent surgery, and was given medications & later discharged. Two months later he started chemotherapy. Four months later he again had severe abdominal pain, constipation & difficulty in breathing. He went to the hospital again where the doctors referred him for Palliative Care.
He came to Dean Foundation very late in the evening with his wife with severe pain and was also depressed. Luckily our nurses were present and gave him reassurance and comfort. Our doctor was called immediately and he examined him thoroughly. He advised the nurses to give him medications for pain relief and other distressing symptoms like constipation, nausea & vomiting, respiratory distress, anxiety & depression. Our Social Worker counseled him and his wife, explained them about the incurability of the disease.
He is getting treatment now and is under various medication.
