Success Story

The child could not perform routine chores like brushing his teeth and putting on a shirt, among other things. Since these are simple tasks that are expected to be done independently, they were taken up as the initial goals.

One special educator along with the physiotherapist made a task analysis for the above-mentioned activities. The task was broken into several smaller goals like holding the brush, moving it up and down etc. A careful plan was implemented in the classroom using the special techniques, aids and appliances. The skill of brushing teeth was dealt with step by step.

As a result of the step-by-step training, the child can now hold the toothbrush and move it up and down. He is still learning to rinse his mouth. He can also hold his shirt up and put his arms into the sleeves, buttoning is a skill yet to be learnt. Learning these skills makes him cooperative during the chores at home, even eager to do things on his own - a step towards personal independence.
