Overview

Hope House is a Tamil Nadu-based, government-recognized, children's home for girls that care for orphan, semi-orphan and disadvantaged girls. All of them attend the Government Higher Secondary School for girls in Katpadi.

How It Works

• Children are referred by someone who understands the child's needs, for example, an HIV counsellor/ medical doctor or a social worker.
• The Hope House staff visits the child's place of residence to cross check the findings of the referrer.
• Once the staff is satisfied, the guardian/ remaining parent(s) is/are encouraged to bring the child for admission.
• At that stage, counselling is provided to the family to bring about clarity with respect to their roles and responsibilities.
• Once the child is admitted for residential care, the child is provided with everything for about a year, at no cost including accommodation, clothes, stationery supplies for education, medical care, recreation, and overall development.
• All the benefits are provided to the child only in kind and not in cash.
• The girls in the girls’ home are either HIV-infected semi orphans or HIV-infected total orphans, mentally handicapped orphans or physically handicapped orphans.
• Some of these girls come from abusive/ alcoholic families.

Statistics

• 6 to 14 years – Age group of the girls at Hope House

Integrated Children’s Home for Girls
Mary (name changed) is a 2 year old little girl referred to the Hope House by Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Vellore district with severe physical deformities. She couldn’t sit nor walk but only rolls on the floor for her mobility. She was unable to verbalize.
We have been taking Mary to several different departments (Orthopedics, ENT, Dental, Developmental Pediatrics and Physiotherapy etc) for the past one and half years.
Now she is able to walk using orthotics and a tri-wheel walker. She has quite a significant vocabulary where she can express her needs and communicate easily. She is growing up like a normal child but she still has a long way to go to become functional and independent.
