How It Works

• At the day care centre, clients engage in activities and recreation and have the opportunity to pursue vocational training options.
• The aim of this activity is to reintegrate those with mental illness by giving them the confidence and skills they need to find employment and move on with their lives.
• Different types of training is provided to the clients every day.

Banyan’s Outreach Centre
The Outreach Centre is part of The Banyan’s Urban Outreach Project, Chennai. It is attended by clients from throughout the city that are unable, often because of stigma and discrimination, to find employment. At the Outreach Centre they engage in activities and recreation and have the opportunity to pursue vocational training options. The aim of this activity is to reintegrate those with mental illness by giving them the confidence and skills they need to find employment and move on with their lives.
The Urban Community Outreach facilitates consumer-care giver support groups. Support groups work in several ways to provide mutual support. The participatory nature of support groups is empowering for people. Often the sharing of knowledge and problems enables people to develop a group consciousness.
The patients are given psychiatric medication after an initial visit to the psychiatrist. Regular reviews are conducted regularly and it includes an assessment of psychiatric, social and medical factors.
