Overview

Salam Balak Trust (SBT) was founded in 1988 after the success of the film Salaam Bombay. SBT is dedicated to the care and protection of neglected runaway street children living in railway stations, bus stands, congested tourist and business areas and slums of Delhi.

How It Works

• Protection is provided to these children regardless of caste, colour, creed or religion.
• Every year, several runaway children are restored to their homes.
• At first SBT contacts the family of the child though the phone or a personal visit. After contacting the family they are asked to bring their documents for ID proof, address proof etc.
• If the child belongs to a poor family which is not able to come to Delhi, then the staff accompany the child back home.

Statistics • 1000 – Number of children who are reunited with their families every year
• 5000 – Number of children who are aided through the various programmes of SBT

A childs yearning for home
Jagdish, now 13 years, ran away from home because of extreme poverty. Coming to the New Delhi Railway station the child started working at a Tea stall. Once he went for rag picking at the station where he was caught by police and sent to SBT shelter home.
SBT provided the child nutrition, clean clothes, medical check up, Non formal education and counseling etc. services. He was staying nearly 3 months in the shelter home.
Today Jagdish is restored back with his family. The court has fined the employer for child labor and the amount (Rs.90000) has been deposited into his account which he can withdraw when he becomes 18.
