Overview

Society for poor people development (SPPD) is an NGO that works on improving the living conditions of underprivileged children in the economically backward communities of Tamil Nadu.

How It Works

• These children stay with their parents in villages and attend SPPD's Evening Study Centres.
• These children also go the nearby government schools.
• The parents of most of these children work in nearby farms or do construction work and their earnings are sufficient only to feed their children.
• Because of the insufficient income of the parents, these children are denied educational materials like uniforms, stationary etc., which creates an inferior complex in the minds of the children and stands as a barrier to their regular schooling.

Opportunity for Dhanam
Dhanam is studying Grade 5 in the Government Middle School, Nachampatty. Her parents are not living together. She is staying with her mother. Her mother is a daily wage labourer. She is the only daughter to her parents. Her family is in a very poor situation. They do not have electricity at home. She is an average student. She had difficulties in her studies. Though she spends most of her time in studying, she is not able to score good marks. Due to the absence of electricity in their house, her homework was usually incomplete.
She was referred by one of our SHG members, and considering her educational level, we enrolled her in the Evening Study Center. She is a regular student to the center. Now she has learnt the method of learning. Her handwriting has also improved. All the lessons are well explained to her.
