Mobile Creches' (MC) runs a day-care programme for children of migrant labourers working in construction sites across Delhi and NCR (Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Noida). The day-care centres (DCs) focus on health, nutrition, education and empowerment. Child-care support empowers the mother by allowing her to go to work. It empowers the older children by freeing them from responsibilities of sibling care and provides them non-formal education (NFE). It ensures nutritious food and a safe environment for the younger child. MC runs 18-20 DCs with an annual average of 60 children per DC. The DC operates from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., 6 days a week for children in the age group 0 – 12 years. Special focus is on the age-group 0-6 years (the age of maximum learning and development). There is a creche for babies below 3 years. Toddlers (3-5 years) keep busy at the Balwadi (play-house), learning as they play and listen to stories. The older children are happy to attend the NFE class where they get to play with alphabets and numbers. They also have fun-filled creative activity in the afternoons. The DC is a temporary structure, situated on the construction site, next to the juggis where the workers live. It is about fifty square feet, with bare brick walls and a tin-sheet roof. Bright collages and drawings attempt to give the room a colourful look. There are no gardens or playgrounds nearby. The children spend their day in the immediate vicinity of gaping foundation pits and piles of bricks. Dry cement dust and noise fill the air around them. Hence, local excursions are planned from time to time. These excursions help in exposing the children to the outside world and afford them a welcome change from their daily surroundings. The activities that are planned around the excursion help in building their confidence and inculcating team spirit in them. The children are taken to the zoo, doll museum, science centre etc. Excursions are always fun-filled and exciting. The children are very enthusiastic and look forward to these outings.
