Overview

Society for poor people development (SPPD) is an NGO that works on improving the living conditions of underprivileged children in the economically backward communities of Tamil Nadu. This programme caters to school-going children who are in grade 8 and above.

How It Works

• These children stay with their parents in villages and go to government schools nearby.
• SPPD selects poor meritorious students based on their annual report card and economic status (which is inferred through their family ration card).
• These children are enrolled in the programme after getting their parents’ approval.
• These children are then provided with monetary support for their school needs, which includes school fees, books, notebooks and monthly toiletry needs.
• This donation option will help provide school supplies and toiletries to a very poor high school student for half a year.

Dana pursuing her dream of becoming a Teacher
Dana is in Grade 9 now and topped her class in Grade 8. However, her family decided to stop her education because they were poor and could not afford to pay for both her and her brother. As per the trend in the villages, they wanted to educate at least her brother and decided to stop her education. Dana wanted to study further and to achieve her aim of becoming a teacher. There was no way out for her.
When SHG women briefed us on her situation, we immediately did a verification check and included her in our programme. We enrolled her in Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School; we paid her school fee, bought 2 sets of uniform and took care of other bursary needs.
Dana was really happy and she studied well. She has secured the top rank in the Final Board exam and we hope that we would be able to help her in pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher.
