Sevalaya runs a free school - Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School. Set up in 1991, it is a Government-recognized, unaided, Tamil-medium school. The school provides quality education to 1,500 poor rural children from 20 villages around Kasuva, where Sevalaya is located; including residents of Sevalaya's destitute children's homes. Most of the children are first-generation learners and are from poor families of daily wage labourers. On receiving application for admission to school, Sevalaya staff go on a verification visit to ascertain the genuineness of the applicant's family conditions. The school provides two sets of uniforms, textbooks, notebooks, and stationery items to all the children, every year, free of cost. The school also provides free transportation to children of the elementary section. The quality of education is evident by the 10th and 12th standard results, which are always near 100%. This year, Sevalaya was the only school in Thiruvallur district to get 100% results in both 10th and 2th grade. We have 59 teaching & 6 non-teaching as of 11/1/12.

Freedom From Bonded Labour
Children in a remote village in Tamilnadu do not go to school like their urban peer do. They are bonded labourers in a brick kiln. Parents are apathetic- they have no choice else they will all go hungry. Those that are orphaned or destitute are worse off.
Sevalaya started a childrens Home and a school in this village, created awareness among parents and provided free food and shelter for destitute and orphan children. They were offered free education , educational aids and uniforms.
About 1000 children now study in the school. The sight of the children smartly dressed in uniforms and marching to school with a smile on their faces and self-confidence, is the change Sevalaya has brought about. No longer are they slaves to bonded labour. Their life has hope.
