Overview

Adarsh is a rehabilitation centre for children with physical and mental disabilities.

How It Works

• Children with Cerebral Palsy usually have physical disabilities. Their main problem is muscular-skeletal abnormality.
• As a result, their upper limb and lower limb muscles, muscles of the trunk, neck, etc. are underdeveloped or abnormally developed. This in turn, causes wrong posture or difficult walking patterns.
• Usually, regular, intensive physiotherapy or occupational therapies can help the children in dealing with these problems.
• However, there are some children with problems which cannot be resolved by these procedures. In such cases, orthopaedic or surgical intervention becomes essential to help them maintain the correct posture or to control the abnormal muscular development.
• Further, there are some children who have visual or hearing problems associated with their developmental problems. These children may require surgery.
• There are also a few children who use medicines on a daily basis for their medical problems like epilepsy, vitamin deficiency, any endocrine problems, etc. In these cases, monetary help is provided on a monthly basis.
• Beneficiaries include students of the training centre, as well as children from the community-based unit.

Statistics

• 40 – Number of children who are supported by Adarsh Rehabilitation Centre.
• Rs. 6,000 – The amount of money that each child receives per year. However, the actual expenses exceed this amount due to the need for regular medication.

An Independent Life–Myth or Reality?
Al-Safeer, a 14-year-old boy, is a Cerebral palsy affected child. He had underdeveloped muscles of the limbs and torso. Also he had developed a curved spine and limbs. As a result, he had a totally wrong posture (slouched position) and could stand only with support.
In 2004, with help from Adarsh, he underwent specialized orthopedic surgery, for correction of posture as well as straightening of limbs. All through this procedure, Adarsh was very cooperative. Post –operative physiotherapy, which is crucial, was also given at Adarsh.
Al-Safeer is now a regular at Adarsh. Of a pleasing disposition, he is taking to the rigorous physiotherapy, advised by doctors, with a calm attitude and toothy smile. His posture has become normal and he is now very much on the road to walking independently, though yet to gain full usage of his limbs.
